WILDLIFE IN COMMON – PART SURVEY OF COUNTY WILDLIFE SITE

County Wildlife Site Survey Form (Ref. No. 473)

Site Name: Ingoldisthorpe Common Parish: Dersingham/Ingoldisthorpe Grid reference: TF 683 314 Area: 24 ha District: West Norfolk Survey date: 18/07/18 and 2019

Registered Common – CL 361

Habitat description:

Site of semi-natural deciduous, damp woodland dominated by silver (Betula pendula) with (Quercus robur), (Sorbus aucparia) and holly (Ilex aquifolium). The ground flora layer is dominated across several areas by purple moor grass ( caerulea) and bracken (Pteridium aquilinum). There is a large amount of Rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) along the southern boundary, and in the north east of the common.

The woodland contains a small area of remnant heath/acid grassland, which has occasional gorse ( europeaus), heather ( vulgaris) and bell heather ( cinerea), also frequent birch regeneration.

Wet ditches cross the site, as do several paths, including the central path that follows the disused railway line.

Please note: For this survey only the registered common land was surveyed, the CWS boundary also takes in part of Life Wood, which was not surveyed in 2018 or 2019.

Habitat map

Target Notes – see annotated map below

Birch woodland Wet birch woodland to west, drier to east where land slopes up slightly. , rowan and holly scattered throughout. Mosaic understorey of purple moor grass (Photo 1), bracken (Photo 2), and bare earth. Few nettles (Urtica dioica).

Drains Narrow, straight, stagnant, red with iron, no life visible in water (Photo 3) Northmost drain wider, flowing, reed (Phragmites australis) and irises (Iris pseudacorus) growing in water (Photo 4), used by moorhens.

Grassy ride Broad strip of mown grass and moss (Photo 5). Kept short to prevent roots growing into sewage pipe which runs under the area. Duckweed in wet areas. Also, grassy circle to west of railway line; site of picnic tables that were burnt by vandals.

Heath Dry sandy soil on slightly higher ground than rest of Common (Photo 6). Gorse, heather, and bell heather under birch.

2 LAST SURVEY: 1994 RESURVEY – WILDLIFE IN COMMON – 2018 AND 2019 WILDLIFE IN COMMON – PART SURVEY OF COUNTY WILDLIFE SITE

Hedges Mixture of hawthorn ( monogyna), bramble (Rubus fruticosus agg.), blackthorn () and field maple (Acer campestre) often with a supporting fence (Photo 7).

Oaks Large veteran oaks along north and south boundaries (Photo 8). Also, grove of oaks in north-east corner with understorey of rotting leaves and soil.

Rhododendrons Large patch growing along edge of southmost drain and small patch at back of houses in north-east corner (Photo 9). Seedlings scattered across Common.

Scotts Pine Small plantation around bench (Photo 10). Bench built to commemorate 25 years of service by Dick Gray, a parish councillor who fought hard to prevent the bypass from cutting through the centre of the Common, i.e. along the site of the dismantled railway line.

Sloes Copse of blackthorn (Photo 11). stunted with little fruit. No longer producing the large crop of sloes sold by the children of the village to Sloe Gin Makers in Hunstanton 60 years ago.

Annotated habitat map if available:

Map from 1983. This has been modified to reflect changes to Common, in particular the building of the A149 bypass

6 LAST SURVEY: 1994 RESURVEY – WILDLIFE IN COMMON – 2018 AND 2019 WILDLIFE IN COMMON – PART SURVEY OF COUNTY WILDLIFE SITE

Other notable : Include non- species eg turtle dove/barn owl/dingy skipper

Sparrowhawk (Successfully fledged young in 2017) Tawny owl (17/07/18) – see photograph 12 Treecreeper (14/07/18) Grass snake (24/08/18) White letter hairstreak (01/07/18) Common frog (21/08/18)

Adjacent habitats/potential buffer zones & linkage to other sites:

To the north west of the Common there are horse paddocks; there is housing to the north east, with some agricultural land and woodland to the east. The south of the Common borders Life Wood, which along with the Common forms CWS 473.

The west of the Common is bordered by the A149.

Is the site in positive conservation management? Yes/no/partly/non-intervention. (Please give details if necessary).

It is believed that the small stretch of heathland species is only kept open by access work to the BT powerlines across the site.

Some of the paths across the Common are maintained by a local resident with a tractor mower.

Has a site condition assessment form been completed for this site? Yes.
