PORTUGAL [email protected] ABSTRACT Description of a new species of Athous and record of the female of A. azoricus Platia & Gudenzi from the Azores (Coleoptera: Elateridae) Athous (Orthathous) pomboi n. sp. is described from the Santa Maria Island. It is the second species of this genus known from the Azorean Archipelago. The distinctive characters of the female of A. azoricus are given. Key words: Coleoptera, Elateridae, new species, Athous, Azores. INTRODUCTION The Azores, an archipelago of nine islands located in the North Atlantic, is not particularly rich in endemic beetles and other arthropods when compared with the other Macaronesian archipelagoes of Madeira and Canaries (BORGES, 1992). However, after a recent intensive survey of 15 Natural orest Reserves and other Azorean reserves (BALA «Biodiversity of Arthropods of the Laurisilva of the Azores» 1998-2002, see BORGES et al. 2000) several new arthropod taxa was discovered including some beetles (see BLAS & BORGES, 1999; BORGES et al., 1 This is the article number 11 of the Project BALA (see (http://www.nrel.colostate.edu/IBOY/ europe_ap.html#BALA) 90 G. Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance.

A key to the genera of Hoplapoderini and field observations on the host plant and reproductive behaviour of the new species are provided. Key words: Attelabidae, Apoderinae, Hoplapoderini, Madagascar, new genus, new species, Grewia Introduction In May 2002, among specimens of Attelabidae collected in Madagascar by David Hauck some months earlier, I received two males belonging to the apoderine tribe Hoplapoderini that could not be assigned to any known genus. A study of the rich collection of Madagascan attelabids at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, a few months later confirmed this diagnosis. During a month-long collecting expedition in Madagascar in December 2003 and January 2004, I collected the new taxon again, at a different locality, and could carry out some observations on its behaviour. Systematics Tribe Hoplapoderini Voss, 1926 Voss (1926) defined his tribe Hoplapoderini largely on the basis of features of the head and elytra. The new Madagascan genus fits into this tribe due to its tapered head, with maximum width near the basis, and its tuberculate elytra. Voss also provided a key to the Accepted by Q. Wang: 7 Oct. 2005; published: 2 Dec. 2005 37 ZOOTAXA genera of the tribe, but this is largely inadequate because of its heavy reliance on the 1089 presence and shape of what he called “abdominal lobes” (“Abdominallappen”).

Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) ADDITIONS, DELETIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE IRISH BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS (LEPIDOPTERA) WITH A CONCISE CHECKLIST OF IRISH SPECIES AND ELACHISTA BIATOMELLA (STAINTON, 1848) NEW TO IRELAND K. G. M. Bond1 and J. P. O’Connor2 1Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology, School of BEES, University College Cork, Distillery Fields, North Mall, Cork, Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 2Emeritus Entomologist, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.

A total of 46 species of Auchenorrhyncha are reported from the Maltese Islands. They belong to the following families: Cixiidae (3 species), Delphacidae (7 species), Meenoplidae (1 species), Dictyopharidae (1 species), Tettigometridae (2 species), Issidae (2 species), Cicadidae (1 species), Aphrophoridae (2 species) and Cicadellidae (27 species). Since the Auchenorrhyncha fauna of Malta was never studied as such, 40 species reported in this work represent new records for this country and of these, Tamaricella complicata, an eastern Mediterranean species, is confirmed for the European territory. One species, Balclutha brevis is an established alien associated with the invasive Fontain Grass, Pennisetum setaceum. From a biogeographical perspective, the most interesting species are represented by Falcidius ebejeri which is endemic to Malta and Tachycixius remanei, a sub-endemic species so far known only from Italy and Malta. Three species recorded from Malta in the Fauna Europaea database were not found during the present study. KEY WORDS. Malta, Mediterranean, Planthoppers, Leafhoppers, new records. INTRODUCTION The Auchenorrhyncha is represented by a large group of plant sap feeding insects commonly referred to as leafhoppers, planthoppers, cicadas, etc. They occur in all terrestrial ecosystems where plants are present. Some species can transmit plant pathogens (viruses, bacteria and phytoplasmas) and this is often a problem if the host-plant happens to be a cultivated plant.

Systematic catalogus of Crambinae of the Balearic Islands (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Abstract: A systematic catalogus of the Crambinae of the Balearic Islands is presented, including 15 species noted from this archipelago. Key words: Lepidoptera, Crambinae, Balearic Islands, faunistics.
