Prayers for those Mrs. Lisa Young , Ofelia Kushner, Assistant Principal who have entered eternity Budget Director/Director of Mrs. Millie Serrano , †Joseph Pini† Accounts Receivable Tuition Accounts Manager FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DAVIS A young attorney, fresh out of law school, was trying out the brand-new desk in his office on his first day with the firm. Hearing someone about to open his office door, he picked up the phone and pretended to be talking to a client: “Yes, Mr. Jones, I understand. I am very busy right now with several cases, but I think I can fit your case in.” Hanging up the receiver, he spun around in his chair to greet the visitor, certain that he had made quite an impression. “Yes, sir, and what can I do for you?” “I’ll only need a moment or two,” replied the visitor. “I’m from the phone company and I’m here to connect your phone!”

As this silly little story illustrates, the young lawyer, given his personal insecurity in his new career, was trying to make an impression. Yet, he demonstrated a lack of authenticity and integrity. He hadn’t yet reached the point of being secure in himself, in his profession, and in how he was to handle himself. As such, he was caught red-handed with terrible inauthenticity. This speaks to the type of personal and moral inconsistency that plays out time and time again in many people’s lives, even in our lives of faith.

In today’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus called out the Pharisees for their inauthenticity and their lack of integrity. In their role as leader in the community, they enjoyed the esteem of the people. They offered their leadership, and they articulated their teachings. They demanded of their hearers careful, if not scrupulous, adherence to certain traditions, standards, and the details of Jewish life. Yet, as their own lives demonstrated, they had not yet captured the spirit of the law, nor had they trained others to get beyond the exterior letter of the law either. They were a people, which according to and quoted by Jesus, who honored the Lord with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. They came to disregard God’s commandments, in favor of mere human precepts and standards. Given the sinful inconsistencies that plagued them, their spiritual lives lacked the integration required for authenticity.

For the Jews of Jesus’ day, as for us, the life of faith always beckons us to authenticity in our relationship with God. Most of the time, we are acutely aware of our own limitations and sins, and with courage we seek to polish off the rough edges and make our lives better. But, sometimes, there is blatant spiritual and moral inconsistency that blocks the authenticity of our response to God in faith. Jesus identified some of the misguided inclinations and sins that get in the way of spiritual health and authenticity. He spoke of evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, and folly. These are evils that, in one form or another, are “breaks” with the demands of the Ten Commandments, and as such are roadblocks to an authentic embrace of God’s teachings for His people. We can’t just sit in the chair of Christianity and pretend to be on the phone, without a lifeline to the power source, and a lived demonstration of consistent faith. In short, if we only have Christianity on the outside (merely in words, in books, and in exterior gestures), there will likely be a serious disconnect in personal integration.

Today the Lord Jesus again calls his people to authenticity. What we say we believe on the outside, we must be sure to believe and foster on the inside, and vice versa. The old adage is that we must walk our talk. May we not only observe a godly tradition of the Christian life, but authentically live it.
