St Genevieve-St. Maurice Catholic Parish Page 2 Gospel Meditation - Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture For some reason, it is easier to genuflect in reverence to the world’s pain. It is not about having, hording, accumulating, presence of Christ in the tabernacle of a church, than to acquiring, securing, storing, protecting, owning, claiming, or genuflect in reverence to the same presence of Christ in any of the other human terms we use to distinguish mine another person’s soul. We wrongly believe that God divides from yours. Letter from our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ: Smyrna is mentioned in the Book of Revelation, and tradition has it that St John the Beloved Disciple was its first Bishop. St Polycarp was its next bishop, and St Ignatius of Antioch and St Irenaeus of Lyon all passed through there. The city is important for ancient Christian literature. Today it is known as Izmir, and has a population of 4.3 million, making it the third largest city in Turkey. Izmir is also the most Westernized and Christian city of Turkey, and is home to the only Archbishopric in the country. Most of the historic churches were either destroyed by earthquakes (there was a massive earthquake a week after I visited!) or taken over as mosques, so the few extant churches are mostly built in the 19th century after the Tanzimat reforms that modernized the Ottoman Empire. A priest of our own Diocese, Fr Gary Linsky, Pastor of St Peter’s Columbia, is actually an honorary canon of the cathedral, from his time as an air force chaplain there. I didn’t know if I was even going to be able to visit the Cathedral, as it was behind high walls and barbed wire. On Saturday after- noon, I rang the outside bell, and went into to see three people praying the Rosary. The rector of the cathedral and two consecrat- ed virgins, all Italians, keep a contemplative life in this historic city.
