Structure and Meaning in Lamentations Homer Heater, Jr. Professor of Bible Exposition Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas Lamentations is perhaps the best example in the Bible of a com bination of divine inspiration and human artistic ability. The depth of pathos as the writer probed the suffering of Zion and his own suf fering is unprecedented. Each chapter is an entity in itself, a com plete poem.1 The most obvious literary device utilized by the poet is the acrostic; that is, poems are built around the letters of the alpha bet. -

Die Tatsache des griechischen Kultureinflusses in den romische πΡ: Provinzen Nordwestafrikas en sich ist mehrfach in der modernen Literatur über die nordafrikanischen Linder gestreift worden. Bisher fehlte jedoch eine zusammenbiegende Betrachtung dieses Problems. Ein Versuch, diese Lücke auszufüllen, ist das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit. Sie baut sich im wesentlichen auf das Materi al der Inschril%en Nordwestafrikas auf, von denen ich ausging. Da die Abschnitte über die Literatur und Archiologie lediglich als absehlieBender Rahmen für das Gesamtbild gedacht sind, habe ich dort auf eingehende eigene Untersuchungen verzichtet und mich im wesentlichen auf die vor- handene oder erreichbare Literatur besebrinkt. Scheinbar berührt sich diese Arbeit in einigen Punkten sprach- licher Untersuchung mit dem Buche von L. Bertholon „Origine et Ε. formation de la langue berbère ( Paris 1907, Leroux)" als zweiter Teil von „Les premiers colons de souche européenne dans l'Afrique du Nord." Aber das Ergebnis Bertholons klingt jedem Fachmanne unglaublich. Der heutige libysch-berbische Dialekt, der im wesent- δ lichen dem der r mischen Kaiserzeit noch entspricht, lißt sich nach ο ο Berth l n als urgriechischer, phrygischer Dialekt nachweisen. Darauf wird die Theorie von einer Ureinwanderueg giiechiseh-phrygischer Stimme nach Nordafrika gegründet und deren Dialekte ein Einfluß auf die Grazisierung der lateinischen Sprache in der Provinz zu- gewiesen. Diese Auffassung wird aber hinfällig, sobald wir erkennen, seit wann sich griechischer KultureinfluB in Nordwestafrika bemerk- bar macht, und auf welche Kreise er sich vorzugsweise erstreckte. -

Priscillian of Avila: Heretic or Early Reformer? by Brian Wagner Introduction The Lord Jesus Christ said, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37).1 Though He was speaking of the last judgment, the principle of letting someone be judged, even in this life, by his own testimony is a sound one. The Bible also speaks of establishing one’s testimony in the mouth of two or three witnesses (1 Timothy 5:19), which is to be a safeguard against a false witness damaging someone’s reputation. History is a study of testimony. The primary source material written by an individual is often the best evidence by which to judge what that person believed and taught. Other contemporaries to that individual could also be used to evaluate whether he was presenting a consistent and coherent message at all times and whether his actions matched his words. As with all historical judgment of this kind, the testimony by friends or foes must be weighed with at least some suspicion of bias. Priscillian of Avila, from the fourth century, has been designated by most of history as a Christian heretic. This conclusion, made by many of his contemporary foes, led to his beheading by the civil authorities. After his death in A.D. 365, his writings were searched out for destruction, along with anyone promoting his teaching. Copies of some of his writings still survive. Very early ones, judged as possibly made within just a century of Priscillian’s martyrdom, were recovered at the University of Würzburg by Georg Schepss in 1885. -

Psalm 119 & the Hebrew Aleph Bet - Part 14 The fourteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called “Nun” (pronounced “noon”) and has the sound of “N” as in “now”. It has the numeric value of 50, the number of the Jubilee. There are two ways to write a Nun. A Nun appearing at the end of a word (sofit) looks like a Vav, but is longer, extending below the baseline. A regular Nun looks much like the Kaph, but is half its width. The Nun stands for FISH. In modern Hebrew, the letter Nun can appear in three forms: Writing the Letter: Nun – The Nun is half as wide as the Kaph Nun: Letter of Faithfulness Nun represents both faithfulness and the reward for faithfulness. Moses is seen as the iconic humble servant of Yahweh. The word “Nun” itself is spelled Nun-Vav-(final) Nun and looks as follows: The one who is humble before God will stand upright in the final Day. In the olam hazeh (present life), this means that the tzaddik (righteous man) will simultaneously affirm: “I am nothing but dust.” Humble yourself in the sight of Yahweh, and He shall lift you up (James 4:10). Nun Study Page 1 Spiritual Meaning of the Nun Nun = 50 and means “FISH” of Yahweh or “The SAVED”. Our Messiah could be called “The Chief FISHERMAN.” He told His disciples that He would make them “FISHERS of men”, (Mark 1:17). Like a FLOURISHING, darting school of FISH that continues to propagate, our Saviour’s Love causes us to multiply and grow in numbers as we share Him with others. -

Conscripted as a soldier into the Roman army, he found the duty incompatible with the Christian faith he had adopted and became an early conscientious objector. -

St. Bede©s historical survey opens with a broad outline of Roman Britain©s geography and history. St. Bede pays special attention to the disagreement between Roman and Celtic Christians, the dates and locations of significant events in the Christian calendar, and political upheaval during the 600©s. St. Bede collected information from a variety of monasteries, early Church and government writings, and the oral histories of Rome and Britain. This book is useful to people looking for a brief survey of religious and political fig- ures and events in Anglo-Saxon history. Readers should re- cognize that St. Bede©s religious and political biases are subtly reflected in his historiography, diminishing its objectiv- ity. Nonetheless, his Ecclesiastical History of England is one of the most important texts of the Anglo-Saxon history. The book©s historical import is evidenced by the fact that nearly 200 hand written copies were produced in the Middle Ages. St. Bede©s text has since been translated into several different languages.
