Church of St. Patrick 400 Main Street Huntington, New York (631)-385-3311 www.stpathuntington.org FROM OUR PASTOR, MSGR. STEVEN R. CAMP

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we welcome Rev. Mr. Paul Clores to the 5:00 pm Mass. Paul was Ordained to the Transitory Diaconate on November 9 by Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan at the Seminary of St. . You will remember that Paul spent this past spring and summer with us as he was finishing up his training and seminary work. He is actually a resident of Huntington, but he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy in Hicksville. Deacon Clores will preach at the 5:00 pm Mass as well. As he continues his studies for the final semester of seminary, we wish him well and look forward to his celebrating Mass here after his ordination in June of 2020.

This is the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time and the final Sunday before we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Scripture readings for the past week and the next two as well, speak of the end times and judgment. It is in this time of year that we are reminded that we await the return of the Lord for the Final Judgement, where there will be the Resurrection and reuniting of our body and soul. Last week I spoke about the proximate judgement of God when we go before Him at our death. This of course is the subject of many a movie and predictions of the end times at various points and times of our history.

The Lord was asked these same questions of His followers. “When will this happen? What are going to be the signs so we will know?, He was asked. We always want to know these answers. In the Gospel, the Lord warns the people to be ware of false prophets and to live lives worthy of Him. In all He reminds us that He will always remain with us and be present to us. No matter how difficult the circumstances are He calls us to perseverance.

The First Reading today from the Prophet warns the people that the Days of the Lord are coming soon and along with Judgement there will be healing and wholeness. To those who were unfaithful the judgment of God will be upon them, for those who remained faithful the vindication of the Lord will be with them. He reminds us, as did St. Paul in the Second Reading to stay focused on the Lord and not become dissipated in our thoughts and actions. The presence of evil and unfaithfulness cannot be the excuse for us to turn away from the Lord. The ancient people of Israel did that, and they abandoned their faith and way of life only to lose their very life itself.

As we now truly begin to enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas Season please take the opportunity to assist those in need by participating in the programs Troicare, Religious Education and the School are working together in. Seeing the Broken Lord in the broken lives of others. Information for all of the upcoming events can be found in the Bulletin over the next several weeks.

Have a great week. Msgr. Camp

Parish Podcast

Dear Parishioners,

The role of the Catholic priest in the Church is both complex and fulfilling. Theologically speaking, this role is put into three categories: sanctifying, governing, and teaching. I am writing to you about my commitment to teaching. During my time here at St. Patrick’s, you have probably heard me speak in a variety of capacities. The primary one most likely has been Sunday homilies, but perhaps the shorter weekday homilies as well. I have taught our students in 5th or 6th Grades on a consistent basis, but for the rest of you, perhaps you were present at a talk here and there. Until now, I considered these opportunities to be sufficient in terms of fulfilling my obligation as a priest to assume the teaching role that was Jesus Christ’s on earth. However, there has been an increasing amount of requests from parishioners (over the last year especially) for an additional resource that is recorded in some way in order to make Catholic topics more accessible to you. Our parish Staff, Finance Council, Parish Council, and School Board generally meet once a month separately. But at a recent joint meeting of these groups, I heard more of these requests presented in a more formal setting. It seems to me it would be inappropriate to ignore these requests any longer.

I am working with some of our staff to launch a parish podcast the First Week of Advent, beginning December 1st. I hope to prepare the content each Monday, and publish it Tuesday morning on a variety of media platforms, available for search on iTunes, Spotify, etc. Each week’s post will likely include a brief recap of the Sunday homily, and when possible, include some perspectives from guests, such as the other priests of the parish. I am most excited to announce that we have set up an email account to which you can submit any questions whatsoever you may have, regarding anything to do with Roman Catholicism. Questions or comments can be submitted at any time, beginning today, to [email protected]. Depending on the submission rate, I can respond to these questions “on the air” in as timely a fashion as possible. The overall goal will be to produce a relatively short but impactful and informative product that you can hear or share during your week, between Sunday Masses. If it becomes of service to any of you, that will be awesome. If it doesn’t really “take off”, that is fine too!

Some of you have asked if perhaps my past desire to avoid this has to do with a liability factor regarding content that is recorded. This, however, is not the case. Published media is common enough among priests of my generation, and I am quite happy to respond to future critics in any way. My concern, rather, has been the creation of a so-called “cult of personality”, whereby the priest is exalted and showcased rather than God, whom he is supposed to be serving. When any member of the clergy is more concerned about being seen, heard, validated, and respected, rather than whether he is leading people to Christ, the integrity of his discipleship to Christ will inevitably begin to disintegrate. If I as a priest lead you to myself and not to Christ, I promise you it will not end well for anyone concerned. I do think, however, it is time to respond with some measure of generosity to the requests that have been made. We can begin this initiative for our parish together, and see where it goes. Please stay tuned for details and submit your questions as soon as you wish!

Love and prayers, Fr. Bissex
