ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Sunday June 13 St. Sylvester 8:30 AM For the Parishioners In today's Gospel reading, we hear Jesus using parables to teach his disciples and the crowds about the Sunday June 13 St. Matthew 11:00 AM +Helen Pearson (Wally & Bonnie Aungst) Kingdom of God. For Jesus, the reality of the Kingdom of God was best explained by drawing on images and experiences from the daily life of the Galilean villagers. Monday June 14 St. Sylvester 8:30 AM +George Kapusta (Audrey Fisher) As we hear in the First Reading today from the prophet Ezekiel, Jewish tradition sometimes compared God's work in the world to the growth of plants and trees. Ezekiel, a prophet in the early stages of Israel's exile in Tuesday June 15 St. Matthew 8:30 AM +Wilma & Remo Rudolph (Jeff & Ramona Taylor) Babylon, prophesied that one day God would restore the exiled Israelites to a mighty and powerful nation, as in the days of King David, when Israel stood as "a majestic cedar." It was a message of hope for a broken and Friday June 18 St. Ambrose 8:30 AM +Eddie Shaffer, Jr. (Ward Family) disheartened people. We find a similar message of hope, with accompanying images of palm and cedar trees, in today’s Saturday June 19 St. Ambrose 5:00 PM +Dennis “Butch” Shoupe (Mike Sharek) Responsorial Psalm. The psalmist offers a prayer of thanksgiving for God for his fidelity to those who are just and have remained faithful. Sunday June 20 St. Sylvester 8:30 AM +Mr. & Mrs. Wayne & Agnes Jones, Sr. (Family) With such rich images and traditions embedded in Israel's prophetic writings and psalm prayers, it is understandable that Jesus would draw on similar agricultural metaphors, such as seeds and Sunday June 20 St. Matthew 11:00 AM For the Parishioners mustard plants, to teach the crowds and his disciples about the Kingdom of God. In his public ministry, Jesus was planting the seeds for the Kingdom of God that promised fulfillment in the Sunday June 20 St. Sylvester 3:00 PM For the Parishioners future. As Paul assures the Corinthians, we can be "courageous" in our faith in Christ. • The Saint Andrew News
The Saint Andrew News St. Andrew Orthodox Church - Riverside, CA Dear Parishioners, As we launch out into this first week of Great Lent we find our systems shocked and we find that the daily routine and rhythm of life is not at all easy to break. Here is the counsel of the Lord as we find it in the Matins of the 1st day of Great Lent: ―Let us joyfully begin the all-hallowed season of abstinence; and let us shine with the bright radiance of the holy commandments of Christ our God, with the brightness of love and the splendor of prayer, with the purity of holiness and the strength of good courage. So, clothed in raiment of light, let us hasten to the Holy Resurrection on the third day, that shines upon the world with the glory of eternal life." There are two important attitudes that we must have at this time according to this text, and that we must maintain throughout the whole of Lent. These two dispositions Volume 18 Issue 2 & 3 are: 1. A spirit of joy. 2. A courageous resolve to spiritually struggle. February/March 2009 1. "Let us joyfully begin..." Remember my dear ones that Lent is a great gift from Published Monthly God to us! It is an immense honor to keep the Lent, to make spiritual progress towards the Lord and His Kingdom, and to receive so much grace as we do St. Andrew Orthodox Church of during the fast. And remember that this is all so that Riverside is a parish of the Self-ruled Antiochian Orthodox we can authentically and properly embrace and rejoice Christian Archdiocese of North in our Savior's Resurrection from the dead on the America, Diocese of the West, Third Day! Above all this Lent try to fast, to serve, to the See of the Right Reverend deny yourself, to pray, to go to church, with joy and JOSEPH, Bishop of not with sourness.
