3 4 Introduction

The Frers Cup was born out of the desire to enjoy the high performance characteristics associated with Frers designs in an enjoyable environment that brings out the substance of sail racing, teamwork, skills, intensity and camaraderie.

Building Block has been the main driving force behind the organization of the event and Trapani with it unique characteristics both at sea and on land is the chosen place for the first edition.

Frers has designed 1,350 successful yachts since 1928, from classics to the cutting edge yachts of the future, designs which vary in age, size and concept and which are sailing the oceans around the globe. For this first edition a selection of special designs were invited and the owners were very enthusiastic about the idea. Some owners will race in this first edition; many are planning to be part of future ones, as are some whose yachts are currently being built. This regatta is a celebration of Frers’ history and future.

With the support of all involved in the organization, the town, the owners and their crews this event is shaping up to become something special.

Looking forward to see you all in Trapani,

German Mani Frers

16 Local Information

Trapani, the ancient Drepanon and its surroundings represent the western part of a unique, intriguing and varied Sicily. It is a multicultural place containing ancient styles and traditions and where history, myth and sea merge.

The ancient city of Trapani was founded by the Elymians to serve as the port of the nearby city of Erice (ancient ), which overlooks it from Monte San Giuliano. The city sits on a low-lying promontory jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea. It was originally named Drépanon from the Greek word for "sickle" because of the curving shape of its harbour. Carthage seized control of the city in 260 BC; subsequently making it an important naval base, but ceded it to Rome in 241 BC following the Battle of the Aegates in the First Punic War.

It is a land of art treasures such as coral, gold and silver, surrounded by the green of the olive groves and vineyards and the whiteness of the salt pans, where old mills beat to the sound of the wind. It boasts white beaches and the crystal clear waters of the picturesque seaside resorts; the sea and the peaceful nature of the islands and nature reserves; Greek temples and theatres; churches and castles and treasures of religious and pagan celebrations .

In addition to the capital, other important towns of the province are: Marsala, known especially for its wine tradition, Mazara del Vallo the hub of fishing and the fish economy, , Castellammare del Golfo, Erice and Alcamo for their views, history and natural beauty, and important for art and archaeology: Selinunte, Segesta, Mozia and the Arab-Norman architecture of Marzara, Castelvetrano and Salemi.

Lastly there are the beautiful Egadi Islands which form a mini-archipelago off Trapani: Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. All three are part of the protected Egadi Marine Reserve.

Trapani Tourist Information Office Via S.F. D’Assisi, 27 Tel: 0923 545500/09/11 Trapani and its surrounding area is bursting with history, nature and a beautiful coast – here are a few visitors’ favourites! For maps and more information ask in the shore office or the local tourist information.

Erice Monte Erice is a cable car ride from the city and aside from the cobbled streets and medieval castle, there are views as far as Tunisia and Africa on clear days.

Museum Pepoli, Trapani In a former Carmelite monastery, this museum houses the collection of Conte Pepoli, who devoted his life to salvaging Trapani's local arts and crafts, most notably the coral carvings. The museum also has a good collection of Gagini sculptures, silverwork, archaeological artefacts and religious art. Riserva Naturale Saline Di Trapani E Paceco Is a nature reserve between Marsala, Trapani, and Paceco. Besides the remarkable Mediterranean flora and fauna there is a salt work museum in an old salt mill.

Chiesa del Purgatorio Built in 1688, this church houses 20 groups of life-size wood statues depicting the Passion of Christ. Made in the 17th and 18th century in Trapani, these statues are carried through town on Good Friday.

Mozia Island, Whitaker Museum and Punic Harbour Located on the tiny island of San Pantaleo, ancient Mozia was one of the Mediterranean's most important Phoenician settlements. Established in the 8th century BC and coveted for its strategic position, Mozia is today the world's best-preserved Phoenician site. Housed in Joseph Whitaker's former villa on San Pantaleo island, the museum displays the amateur archaeologist's unique collection of Phoenician artefacts. The museum's greatest treasure is Il Giovinetto di Mozia, a marble statue of a young man in a pleated robe suggesting Carthaginian influences.

Segesta The Temple of Segesta is perhaps the best-preserved Doric temple in the world, and the only freestanding limestone temple in Sicily. It stands on a 304m hill, on the edge of a deep ravine carved by the Pispisa River.

Isole Egadi & Favignana

A.S.D Gulliver scuola vela Favignana

The Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area is the largest in Europe covering 53.992 hectares. It surrounds the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, and the small islands of Formica and Maraone. It was established in 1991 and is managed, on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, by the Municipality of Favignana. The MPA protects the meadows of the best preserved Posidonia oceanica, a sea grass known" as the lungs of the Mediterranean"; a fish fauna rich in number and biodiversity; many protected species, such as the sea turtle Caretta Caretta; several cetaceans (especially dolphins and bottlenose dolphins); sharks and the very rare monk seal.

Favignana is surrounded by stunning beaches and bays, and crystal clear waters; the sea of the Egadi is among the cleanest and clearest in the Mediterranean.

The islands are just off the coast of Trapani and are an excellent day trip, with crossings taking just 20 minutes (to Favignana and Levanzo). Siremar and Ustica Lines run a total of about 15 hydrofoil crossings a day from Trapani (quay immediately west of the regatta village).

We have been given special dispensation to moor off the sensitive beaches of Favagnana on Sunday 29th.

Gulliver sailing school was founded in 1988 by Peppe White and Jaco Field to bring sailing to the children of Favignana. Their love for the sea was strengthened by Mostacci Carlo Leone, the owner of a great lady of the sea, the 8m SI Aria, who infected them with his passion for sailing and regattas. Since then, the adventure has continued, the two young men wanted to give something back and set up the sailing school to engage children in the world of sailing and transmit values such as solidarity, respect for their peers and for the environment.

For members and young visitors learning to sail, it does not matter if GULLIVER is a dwarf in the world of the sailing giants, the important thing is that it is a giant favignanesi for young people and for anyone who wants to get closer to sailing in the wonderful place that is the island of Favignana.
