The textual base for this edition of “The First VersionsoftheLord’sPrayerintheTlingit&Kodiak(Alutiiq)Languages”is fromthefollowingsources: 1) The original Cyrillic Tlingit/Slavonic manuscript, dated February 20, 1812,whichcanbefoundinthearchivesofthe“NationalLibraryofRussia”in St. Petersburg, Russia – Manuscript Division, Fond 7 [Adelung], Delo 143, SitkalanguagematerialcollectedbyA.A.Baranov1812. 2) The original, undated, Cyrillic Alutiiq/Slavonic manuscript (Identifier: SUC810Br1816),whichcanbefoundaspartoftheAlutiiqLanguageCollection, AlaskaNativeLanguageCenterArchive,UniversityofAlaskaFairbanks. 3) The Germanlanguage publication: “Mithridates oder allgemeine SprachenkundemitdemVaterUnseralsSprachprobeinbeynahefnfhundert SprachenundMundarten”,Volume3,Part3,Berlin,1816,compiledbyJohann ChristophAdelung&JohannSeverinVater.TheTlingitandAlutiiqtranslations oftheLord’sPrayer(inGermanorthography)canbefoundonpages225and 465,respectively. Inthe1816publication(item3),boththeTlingitandAlutiiqtranslations werelistedashavingbeenprovidedbyAlexanderBaranov,ChiefManagerofthe RussianAmericanCompany.Theactualtranslatorof the Tlingitlanguage Lord’s Prayer is unknown. The Alutiiq translation, however, can be attributed to

The original Alutiiq manuscript (item 2), upon which the published version (item 3) was based, contained the brief colophon “|.|” indicating: “”(Kodiak).Althoughthepublishedtextwaslistedasbeing“Jakutat” (YakutatEyak),itclearlyresemblesotherlatertranslationsoftheLord’sPrayer inAlutiiqcontainedin: • SacredHistory&Catechism(1847), • Kodiak(Alutiiq)Primer(1848), • HolyGospelofSt.Matthew(1848), • Primer&Prayerbook(circa1855to1867) The transcriber has done his best to transcribe the text accurately, reflecting the intricacies of the Cyrillic and German orthographies used in the various source documents. Minor differences exist between the manuscripts and published versions; these variances have been left as is, without modifying or harmonizingtheunderlyingtexts. Slavonic (in Synodal typography) and English translations of the Lord’s Prayerhavebeenaddedtothelastpageofthispresentpublication.TheChurch Slavonic additions are sourced from Orthodox Service Books of the Moscow Patriarchate( Молитвосл0въ , КанHнникъ , Часосл0въ ),whichareavailableonlinein scanned format at: www.liturgy.ru. The English translation is taken from THE NEW TESTAMENT OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST (Authorized Version), Thomas Nelson & Sons, New York N.Y., 1899, pg. 9. Minor emendations to the English text were made by the transcriber of this present publication to correspond with standard Orthodox Christian usage (e.g. deliverusfromevil =deliverusfromtheevilone ,etc.). No modifications were made between the 1 st and 2 nd digitally typeset editionsofthispublication.
