The Market for Financial Advice: an Audit Study
The Market for Financial Advice: An Audit Study Sendhil Mullainathan (Harvard University) Markus Nöth (University of Hamburg) Antoinette Schoar (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) April, 2011 A growing literature shows that households are prone to behavioral biases in choosing portfolios. Yet a large market for advice exists which can potentially insulate households from these biases. Advisers may efficiently mitigate these biases, especially given the competition between them. But advisers’ self interest – and individuals’ insufficiently correcting for it – may also lead to them giving faulty advice. We use an audit study methodology with four treatments to document the quality of the advice in the retail market. The results suggest that the advice market, if anything, likely exaggerates existing biases. Advisers encourage chasing returns, push for actively managed funds, and even actively push them on auditors who begin with a well‐diversified low fee portfolio. Introduction A growing body of lab – and to a lesser extent field – evidence argues that individual investors make poor financial decisions. Drawing on research in psychology, this evidence argues that consumers’ beliefs and decision processes lead them astray. They chase trends, are overconfident, use heuristics and generally fall prey to biases that lead them to choose in ways at odds with basic portfolio theory. For example, the median household rebalances its retirement portfolio zero times (Samuelson and Zeckhauser, 1988), whereas in traditional portfolio theory rebalancing would be optimal in response to aging and the realization of uncertain returns. -

While col- lecting chitons he was trapped by an incoming tide. To save himself, he wished to become an otter. His transformation created all otters. In fact, archeological evidence suggests that the highly productive kelp forests of the Pacific Rim may have sustained the original coastal ocean migration route of maritime people to the Americas near the end of the Pleistocene ( Erlandson et al., 2007 ). Similarly, many coastal First Nations stories speak of ancestors who came from the sea (Boas, 1932; Brown and Brown, 2009; Guujaaw, 2005; Swanton, 1909). Native People in a Pacific World: The Native Alaskan Encounter and Exchange with Native People of the Pacific Coast Gabe Chang-Deutsch 2,471 words Junior Research Paper The Unangan and Alutiiq peoples of Alaska worked in the fur trade in the early 1800s in Alaska, California and Hawaii. Their activities make us rethink the history of Native people and exploration, encounter and exchange. Most historical accounts focus on Native encounters with European people, but Native people also explored and met new Indigenous cultures. The early 1800s was a time of great global voyages and intermixing, from Captain Cook's Pacific voyages to the commercial fur trade in the eastern U.S to diverse workplaces in Atlantic world ports. The encounters and exchanges between and among Native people of the Pacific Coast are major part of this story. Relations between Native Alaskans, Native Californians and Hawaiians show how Native-to-Native encounters and exchanges were important in the creation of empire and the global economy. During the exploration of the Pacific coast in the early 1800s, Unangan and Alutiiq people created their own multicultural encounters and exchanges in the Pacific with Russian colonists, but most importantly with the indigenous people of Hawaii and California. By examining the religious and cultural exchanges with Russian fur traders in the Aleutian Islands, the creation of cosmopolitan domestic partnerships between different Native groups at Fort Ross and Native-to-Native artistic exchanges in Hawaii, we can see how Native-led events and ideas were integral to the growing importance of the Pacific and beginning an intercontinentally connected world. -

Embellishments of the Alaska Native Gut Parka Fran Reed (1943 - 2008) [email protected] Dealing with the various and extreme weather conditions in Alaska is a serious matter. Coastal Native Alaskans have been surviving in these severe environments for millennia. Without a local general store in which to buy a nice rain slicker, one must be resourceful with what is available. Between the hot summers and frigid winters are the transition seasons when it rains. Bird skins and fish skins were used extensively to make raincoats but it is the gut skin parka that proved so universal along the coast of Alaska (Fig. 1). From village to village different preparations, stitching methods and artistic styles are apparent and expressed in the embellishments that define the region, the culture and the function of these beautiful outer garments. For hundreds of years the indigenous people of the circumpolar region survived extreme conditions on their ingenuity and creativity. -

Possible New World Affiliations of the Neolithic Baikal People Ben R. Huelsman, Indiana University Of the few well-documented archaeological skeletal series of Siberia, the Neolithic Baikal Type "A" population is of considerable interest because of its widespread ramifications in both Siberia and northwestern North America. This Neolithic population was first described by the Russian physical anthropologist, G. F. Debetz as a result of his examina- tion of a series of skulls from the late neolithic of the Transbaikal region. It is apparent, as Debetz himself recognized, that this neolithic Siberian population resembles somewhat the contemporary Aleut. If the Pre-Aleuts are compared with the Baikal populations, however, the resemblances are even more striking. The Neolithic Baikal population and the Pre-Aleuts share the follow- ing traits: the vault is absolutely long, narrow, and low, the forehead is very sloping, the brow-ridges are moderate in development, and the cranial index is dolichocranial. For both groups the face is typically long and moderately broad in its absolute dimensions; both populations are lepto- prosopic, the upper facial index being mesene; the nasal index is leptor- rhine and the orbital index is hypsiconch. The later Aleut population differs from the Baikal people in being broader and shorter vaulted, the cranial index falling into the brachy- cranial index class. With reference to facial dimensions and profile, how- ever, the present-day Aleut are skeletally still quite close to the Siberian group. The Eskimo also disclose a facial similarity close to the Neolithic Baikal population, but these resemblances are limited to the face. The Neolithic Baikal population is characterized by an extremely low mean cranial height which is apparently due to platybasia, while the Eskimo are one of the most high vaulted groups in North America. -

Customs, culture, artwork, and native language often differ dramatically from one community to another. Some are nestled within large communities while others are small and remote. Some are urbanized while others practice subsistence living. Still, there are fundamental relationships that have endured for thousands of years. One approach to understanding links between Alaska Native communities is to group them by language. This helps the student or researcher to locate related communities in a way not possible by other means. It also helps to define geographic areas in the huge expanse that is Alaska.
