BEACH CORRIDOR CAUSEWAY EXTENSION PROJECT FALL 2021 FACT SHEET

PROJECT OVERVIEW & BACKGROUNDwww.miamidade.gov/transit 311 or 305.468.5900 TTY/Florida Relay: 711 The Beach Corridor Causeway Extension (Trunkline) project is the east-west segment of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan’s Beach Corridor that connects Downtown Miami and the City of Miami Beach across Biscayne Bay. As early as 1988, numerous studies have identified the MacArthur Causeway as the optimal route for a mass transit solution between Downtown Miami and Miami Beach. Both areas are international tourist destinations that have experienced rapid residential growth which is predicted to increase 75% by 2035. A premium rapid transit service will help sustain this significant population increase by reducing the use of private vehicles, enhancing connections with existing transit systems, and promoting pedestrian and -friendly solutions along the corridor. The most recent study of the Beach Corridor evaluated various transit modes for the Trunkline including automated , heavy rail, , and at- Rapid Transit. In January 2020, Elevated Rubber was selected as the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) by the Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). PROJECT STATUS In October 2020, Miami-Dade County approved an Interim Agreement (IA) with MBM Partners, LLC to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a transit system along the Beach Corridor Trunkline. The IA phase of this public-private partnership, which is anticipated to last approximately 18 months, consists of pre-development work such as utility, environmental, and geotechnical surveys, permit coordination, financing, and conceptual design. A Project Agreement (PA) will be developed to construct and build the proposed monorail service along the MacArthur Causeway from Downtown Miami/Overtown at the Herald Plaza to the City of Miami Beach at Washington Avenue and 5th Street.
