Skytrain Upgrade Project
BACKGROUNDER SKYTRAIN UPGRADE PROJECT Upgrades to the existing SkyTrain network are necessary to meet current and future demand, and are a pre-condition for new rapid transit projects WHAT IS THE SKYTRAIN UPGRADE PROJECT? The 2014 Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation included analysis and recommendations on the type of investments needed to keep the existing SkyTrain system modern and up to the task of meeting growing demand over the next 30 years. The upgrade project includes: 100 new Mark III SkyTrain cars (28 already funded in Phase One Plan; 72 cars remaining); New storage and maintenance facilities for the new cars Control and power system upgrades to ensure new cars can be operated Station upgrades to improve passenger amenities and access WHY IS THIS UPGRADE PROJECT NEEDED NOW? Current and future ridership will strain the existing system The Expo Line officially launched in 1986 and the Millennium Line opened in 2002. Since then the population and level of employment in the region has grown, and the current capacity of the system is insufficient to meet the demands during period periods. This is resulting in passengers being passed up and crowding on platforms at the busiest stations during peak periods. The recent opening of the Evergreen Extension has resulted in higher ridership and crowding on the system more quickly than anticipated. This is expected to worsen with more people coming to the region, more development near stations, and planned bus expansion in the 10-Year Vision connecting to the SkyTrain system. Previous improvements and investments in the Phase One Plan only meets today’s needs TransLink procured 28 Mark III SkyTrain cars to meet the ridership demand from the Evergreen Extension, and the Phase One Plan of the 10-Year Vision includes 28 additional Mark III cars. -

Hitachi Review Vol. 59 (2010), No. 1 39 Development and Maintenance of Class 395 High-speed Train for UK High Speed 1 Toshihiko Mochida OVERVIEW: Hitachi supplied 174 cars to consist of 29 train sets for the Class Naoaki Yamamoto 395 universal AC/DC high-speed trains able to transfer directly between the Kenjiro Goda UK’s existing network and High Speed 1, the country’s first dedicated high- speed railway line. The Class 395 was developed by applying technologies Takashi Matsushita for lighter weight and higher speed developed in Japan to the UK railway Takashi Kamei system based on the A-train concept which features a lightweight aluminum carbody and self-supporting interior module. Hitachi is also responsible for conducting operating trials to verify the reliability and ride comfort of the trains and for providing maintenance services after the trains start operation. The trains, which formally commenced commercial operation in December 2009, are helping to increase the speed of domestic services in Southeast England and it is anticipated that they will have an important role in transporting visitors between venues during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Ropeway People Movers for Ski Resorts by Andrew S. Jakes* Abstract Las Vegas, Reno, Sun City, Foxwoods, Tunica, Broad Beach, and several other international mega-resorts, have discovered that People Movers (Automated Guideway Transit) improve their image and subsequently attract new customers. In addition to presenting the rope-propelled People Mover technologies, this paper reviews how specific installations have solved visitor circulation needs in many hotel resort complexes in Las Vegas and elsewhere. This approach can be duplicated to many ski resorts worldwide since the level of ridership in Las Vegas frequently exceeds levels typically found on ski resort shuttle bus systems worldwide. We particularly focus on existing, proven technologies and specific installations, including ropeway Horizontal Elevators (Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Primadonna, and Circus-Circus Automated People Mover installations). People Mover systems represent major changes and advances in equipment, facilities, operations, and services in comparison with conventional rail, bus, taxi, and other street modes. System performance and capacities can be tailored to match expected loads and a broad range of performance and operational requirements. Suppliers usually claim, with justification, that they can adapt their product to buyer's specific needs. Vehicle size can be expanded or reduced. Seats can be added or removed from vehicles. Various grades and curves can be accommodated by altering guideway design and speeds. Riding the circulation People Mover system can be as convenient, safe and comfortable as riding a modern elevator. Stations can be sufficiently numerous to provide development-wide access. Passengers experience little or no waiting for vehicles. The operation can be environmentally friendly with no emissions, very little noise and minimum visual impacts. -

(a) Hoisting and lowering mechanisms equipped with a car or platform, which move between two or more landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, the following (also see ASME A17.1/CSA B44, ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7, ASME A17.3 and ASME A18.1): 1. Elevators; 2.
