RWANDA- PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION STUDY ABROAD SUMMER 2018

In April 1994, members of the tribe in Rwanda began slaughtering their fellow tribal neighbors across the country. Within 90 days, nearly one million and moderate had been killed. The Rwandan stands out as one of the ugliest and most horrific events in modern history. Yet in the years following that unimaginable episode of violence, Rwanda has emerged as a model for peacebuilding and healing. Students will hear from genocide survivors and learn about the unique approaches Rwandans have taken to cope with the aftermath of genocide and work toward a sustainable peace. Various trips and excursions will give students the opportunity to observe and assist with a range of conflict resolution efforts across the country and in neighboring Uganda. With a focus on both interpersonal and international conflict resolution, the program will provide students with ideas and tools for helping to create and promote peace in their individual lives and throughout the . Students will also experience the immense natural beauty of Rwanda and Uganda with trips to national parks to see the incredible wildlife unique to .

DATES 30 June–2 August

HOUSING Students will stay in dormitory rooms for most of the program. For excursions to national parks, students will stay in lodges and tents.

COURSES Students must take six credit hours from the following courses: ST DEV 359: Conflict Resolution (2 credit hours) IAS 397R: Topics in International and Area Studies (3 credit hours) IAS 399R: International Internship (1 credit hour)

COST $4,600–4,900

Includes LDS undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-LDS students), visa, housing, group transportation on field trips and from Rwanda to Uganda, international health insurance, entrance fees to field trips and most safari activities. It also includes most meals.

Does not include airfare (estimated at $1,500–2,000), some meals, personal expenses, , and immunizations.

PREPARATION Accepted students are required to participate in our study abroad preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This course will be held Tuesdays from 4:00 to 5:40 p.m. during the second-block of winter semester. Accompanying spouses need to be credit- bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee.

FUNDING SOURCES Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Students who submit the financial section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid. Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

APPLICATION PROCESS Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. The application requires a $35 fee. Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete. Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance. SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT Students should fly into , Rwanda, and arrive on Saturday, June 30. They will fly out of Entebbe, Uganda, on Thursday, August 2.
