JMU Wireless Network

Configuration for Windows 7

Connecting for the first time

By clicking once on the Wireless Network Connection on the right of the Task Bar, Windows will display available wireless networks and the network you are connected to, if any.

To begin configuring your Windows 7 for the wireless network, click JMU-Official-Wireless. JMU- Official-Wireless will become highlighted when it is selected.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Windows will now display Connecting to JMU-Official-Wireless... while it detects the security settings for the wireless network.

You will then be prompted to accept the authentication server’s certificate to initiate encryption. This keeps your e-ID and password safe. Since this the first time Windows has encountered this certificate, it will display the warning below.

To verify the certificate information, click the triangle button next to Details.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ The Windows Security Alert will then expand to show information about the certificate. The certificate will be for wireless.jmu.edu, issued by USERTrust RSA Certification Authority.

Click Connect to continue.

Enter your e-ID and password, then click OK. If your computer is joined to Active you may not receive this prompt.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Windows may display Connecting to JMU-Official-Wireless... again while it connects to the network.

It may take several seconds for your computer to acquire an IP address, during which time Windows may change the Wireless Network Connection icon to look like the one below on the right.

After successfully connecting to the wireless network and getting an IP address, Windows will change the Wireless Network Connection icon to look like the one below on the right, with the solid white bars indicating how strong the wireless signal is. This may vary depending on your location.

By clicking once on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the right of the Task Bar, Windows will display available wireless networks and the network you are connected to, if any.

To reconnect to the wireless network, click JMU-Official-Wireless. JMU-Official- Wireless will become highlighted when it is selected.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Windows will now attempt to connect to the JMU-Official-Wireless network.

If your computer is not joined to Active Directory, you will be asked to enter your logon credentials to connect to the wireless network. Enter your e-ID and password, then click on OK.

If your computer is joined to Active Directory, Windows will use the domain credentials you logged on with to join the JMU-Official-Wireless network.

Windows will present a progress display while it attempts to connect to the wireless network.

If your Windows 7 computer cannot connect to the JMU-Official-Wireless network using the steps outlined above, follow these steps to manually configure settings for the wireless network.

Begin by clicking once on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the right of the Task Bar, then click Open Network and Sharing Center.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ In the Network and Sharing Center window, click on Manage wireless networks on the left.

In the new Manage Wireless Networks window, click on JMU-Official- Wireless. JMU-Official-Wireless will become highlighted when it is selected. You may skip this step if it is not listed.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Click the Remove button above the list of wireless networks. You may skip this step if you skipped the previous one.

Windows 7 will ask you to confirm that you wish to remove the wireless network. Click OK. You may skip this step if you skipped the previous one.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Now that JMU-Official-Wireless is no longer listed as known wireless network, or if it was not configured to begin with, click Add above the list of wireless networks.

The Manually connect to a wireless network window will be displayed. Click Manually create a network profile to continue.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ You will then be prompted for information about the wireless network. Enter JMU- Official-Wireless in the Network name field.

Then select WPA2-Enterprise from the Security type drop-down list.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ After selecting WPA2-Enterprise from Security type, the Encryption type will automatically be set to AES. Click the Next button to continue.

Windows 7 will display Adding JMU-Official-Wireless... as it configures the wireless network connection.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Windows 7 may prompt you for credentials to connect to the wireless network. Ignore this prompt for now.

After the wireless network as been successfully configured, click on Change connection settings.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ This will display the wireless network’s properties. Click the Security at the top of the Wireless Network Properties window.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ Even if you are not using Active Directory credentials to automatically connect to the wireless network, Windows 7 will still save the password you use to connect the first time. It is not recommended that users save this password and this function can be disabled by unchecking the box next to Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on.

Click the Settings button next to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) to continue.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ In the resulting Protected EAP Properties window, under Trusted Root Certification Authorities, scroll down to USERTrust RSA Certification Authority and check the box to the left of it. USERTrust RSA Certification Authority may not be present in the list if you have not yet tried to connect to the wireless network.

Then click the Configure... button next to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) to continue.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ If your computer is NOT joined to Active Directory, uncheck the box next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any), then click on OK.

If your computer IS joined to Active Directory and you want your computer to automatically in to the wireless network, leave the box checked and click on OK.

If you are not sure if your computer is joined to Active Directory, uncheck the box and click on OK.

This will return you to the Wireless Network Properties window. Click OK.

You may close the Manage Wireless Networks window.

Windows 7 will notify you that additional information is required to connect to JMU-Official-Wireless, click on the notification.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/ You will then be prompted for your username and password. Enter your e-ID and password, then click OK. If your computer is joined to Active Directory you may not receive this prompt.
