ABOUT PROGRAMS AND OPERATING SYSTEMS Any time a task is performed on a computer, it is done through a program. For the user, the program is the application – the tool – for accomplishing a task. For the computer, it is a set of instructions on knowing how to perform this task. Examples of programs include Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word. The most important program overall is the operating system, which manages all of the computer’s resources and decides how to treat input from the user. There are several different operating systems in circulation, such as Mac O/S and Linux. However, far and away, the most commonly-used operating system is Microsoft Windows. (Note that Microsoft is just the name of the company that makes Windows, and that there are several versions of Windows. In 2012 all the computers in the lab were updated to the version of Windows called Windows 7. If you have some experience with the older versions of Windows you will notice that things look a bit different on a computer running Windows 7. THE WINDOWS 7 ENVIRONMENT The Desktop The first thing you see when you log on to the computer is the DESKTOP. The Desktop is the display area you see when Windows opens. Google Toolbar is an end-user application that adds a search bar and other useful web tools to the Internet Explorer browser window. Google Toolbar for Enterprise makes it easy to provide enterprise users with the Google Toolbar and to create standards for its use. The document was written for Windows domain administrators. As an administrator, you can install and configure Google Toolbar for all users. By defining enterprise-wide policies for Google Toolbar, you can decide which buttons and features users can access. For example, you could remove the feature that saves search history, whitelist certain pages to exempt them from the popup blocker, or prevent users from sending votes to Google about their favorite web pages . You can configure policies before installing Google Toolbar for the users, or at any subsequent time. Google Toolbar also provides the ability to create custom buttons that display specified pages, direct searches to predefined systems, or display information from an RSS feed. Using Google Toolbar for Enterprise, you can define buttons for all users, using data from your own network or from the Internet. For example, you could create a custom button that directs a user's search to your Google Search Appliance or Google Mini to display a corporate web page or show important phone numbers from your intranet. -

Softpress KnowledgeBase Using jQuery Code with Freeway Here we will run through the steps used to implement a jQuery horizontal scrollbar similar to the one which can be found at http://jquerytools.org/documentation/rangeinput/ so it can be used to make content within an item on a page scroll horizontally - but please note that we cannot give specific support or instructions for other JavaScript functionality you may find on the web. This is because the way the code is used and edited (sometimes by doing your own hand-coding) varies greatly from one to the next - and many of the sites which offer the code give very limited details of how it needs to be used, sometimes to the point that only those with excellent coding skills will be able to use it. As you will see, this is a long and complex procedure - and this will be the same with any other web design application unless a Freeway Action (or a similar method in other applications) is available to use to simplify the process. It is very important to note that mixing and matching JavaScript libraries on the same page will often cause conflicts. This means that using jQuery functionality on a page will break the Scriptaculous functionality used by many Freeway Actions. This will be discussed later in this article with a specific example. Sometimes this can be fixed by specifying some "NoConflict" code - however, this cannot be fixed with this particular jQuery function without a major rewrite of the supplied jQuery code. Overview We are often asked by customers how a particular website has used some special functionality, and they ask if this can be done in Freeway. -
The Desktop (Overview)
The desktop (overview) The desktop is the main screen area that you see after you turn on your computer and log on to Windows. Like the top of an actual desk, it serves as a surface for your work. When you open programs or folders, they appear on the desktop. You can also put things on the desktop, such as files and folders, and arrange them however you want. The desktop is sometimes defined more broadly to include the taskbar and Windows Sidebar. The taskbar sits at the bottom of your screen. It shows you which programs are running and allows you to switch between them. It also contains the Start button , which you can use to access programs, folders, and computer settings. On the side of the screen, Sidebar contains small programs called gadgets. The desktop, taskbar, and Sidebar Where did my desktop go? Because programs run on top of the desktop, the desktop itself is often partially or completely hidden. But it's still there, underneath everything. To see the whole desktop without closing any of your open programs or windows, click the Show Desktop button on the taskbar. The desktop is revealed. Click the icon again to restore all of your windows to the way they were. [Not for Circulation] Introduction to Windows 7 This document provides a basic overview of the new and enhanced features of Windows 7 as well as instructions for how to request an upgrade. Windows 7 at UIS Windows 7 is Microsoft’s latest operating system. Beginning in the fall of 2010, UIS will upgrade all classroom and lab PCs to Windows 7. Any new PC that is ordered will automatically come installed with Windows 7. To request an upgrade, contact the Technology Support Center (TSC) at 217/206-6000 or [email protected]. The TSC will evaluate your machine to see if it’s capable of running Windows 7. (Your computer needs a dual core processor and at least 2 GB of RAM.) Please note that University licensing does NOT cover distribution of Windows 7 for personally owned computers. However, it is available for a discounted price via the WebStore at http://webstore.illinois.edu. What to Consider Before Upgrading There is no direct upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7. Therefore, the TSC will take your computer, save your files, and install Windows 7 on a clean hard drive. Please budget a couple days for this process. In some cases, you may have older devices that will not work with Windows 7. While many vendors are providing and will continue to provide drivers for their hardware, in some cases, printers, scanners, and other devices that are more than 5 years old may have issues running on Windows 7. Like human–computer interaction (HCI), it draws from many disciplines and has links to a wide variety of topics. In this chapter, we briefly describe the history of 3D UIs to set the stage for the rest of the book. We also present a 3D UI “roadmap” that posi- tions the topics covered in this book relative to associated areas. After reading this chapter, you should have an understanding of the origins of 3D UIs and its relation to other fields, and you should know what types of information to expect from the remainder of this book. 2.1. History of 3D UIs The graphical user interfaces (GUIs) used in today’s personal computers have an interesting history. Prior to 1980, almost all interaction with com- puters was based on typing complicated commands using a keyboard. The display was used almost exclusively for text, and when graphics were used, they were typically noninteractive. But around 1980, several technologies, such as the mouse, inexpensive raster graphics displays, and reasonably priced personal computer parts, were all mature enough to enable the first GUIs (such as the Xerox Star). With the advent of GUIs, UI design and HCI in general became a much more important research area, since the research affected everyone using computers.
