Wow… What a year - can it really be coming to an end? I can hardly believe this will be my last InterFACE article as your President. It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to represent F.A.C.E. and serve our membership. Being on the F.A.C.E. Board is a very rewarding responsibility and one all your board members have taken seriously. I cannot begin to tell you in one short article, how proud I am of each committee and individual accomplishments this year; so I’ll let them share a few success stories in their reports, while I compile the extensive list for sharing in the State of Association address during the conference. Suffice it to say, it is impressive for now.

Thank you to the Board, Legal Advisor Bob Hamilton, and our Administration arm Marilyn Crotty and the entire UCF/IOG for their commitment and dedication to F.A.C.E. The symbiotic relationship required to pull everything off on an annual basis is quite remarkable, and something I wish every F.A.C.E. member could experience.

Make sure you submit the Code Enforcement Proclamation (located in this INTERFACE) to your city or county for approval. Join other cities and counties across the State of Florida recognizing the work we do every day.

Don’t forget to stay plugged into our F.A.C.E. website for updates and log into the Members Only section regularly. Get involved in F.A.C.E. and join one of our standing Committees – Click on the link below for a copy of the new Committee Application form:

Our organization is only as strong as our member’s interest in continuing to make it the BEST association in the country. Don’t forget - maintaining your active membership and certifications is both a privilege and responsibility of being a F.A.C.E. member.

Fair winds and following seas… Always Yours in Public Service, Michael J. Titmuss - President

The 25th Anniversary F.A.C.E. Conference at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, located at 700 South Florida Ave. Tampa, FL 33602, is just around the corner . This year, we will be offering a variety of classes from traditional to avant-garde topics. With such a wide range of covered subjects we are confident that you will find the 2014 conference exhilarating and informative. If you haven’t registered yet, no need to fret, there is still time to do so: visit http://iog.ucf.edu/2014facecon/index.html

With this being the silver anniversary conference, F.A.C.E. Historian Donna Wisniewski has put together a celebration package honoring our past leadership and history of the Association. From mentions during the general session to a high-tech display during the banquet festivities, Donna will ensure our historical stepping stone is well documented throughout conference.

When not attending one of the many exciting classes offered or enjoying a historical celebration, you will enjoy delicious food and top-notch entertainment. On Thursday, when F.A.C.E. does not provide lunch, we will have a F.A.C.E. exclusive food truck rally at the Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, which is located just east of the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina. Join your colleagues for a mixed taste of Tampa! It will be an experience your palate will never forget!

On Thursday evening, the 25th Anniversary F.A.C.E. banquet will be held at the host hotel. Our menu will be based on the flavors of Italian cuisine, a perennial favorite. As dinner winds down, you will be entertained by the nationally renowned Distinguished Men of Brass, who competed on “America’s Got Talent” a couple of years ago (here is one of their performances from the popular show: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=cZwYdOXfqc4) Once our musical entertainment has ended, we will celebrate our host city, Tampa, who also hosted our first conference in 1989. In the spirit of Gasparilla, we will hold a pirate costume contest with prizes for the top three costumes as decided by the audience. Time to dust off your tricorne, polish off your saber and show all of F.A.C.E. your Pirating for Compliance spirit!

It wouldn’t be a silver anniversary celebration without prizes. In addition to all the wonderful gift baskets donated by our various chapters, we will have gift certificates and other exciting door prizes. There will be big prize drawings during this 25th silver anniversary conference. The first drawing will be held during the general session and one lucky attendee will win “a cruise for two in Tampa harbor” compliments of Yacht Starship. Secondly, we will be drawing the grand prize during the banquet ceremonies which includes a two night stay and spa treatments for two at the 2015 host hotel, the Waldorf Astoria Naples. You must be present to win either prize so don’t sneak out early for that tasty milkshake or soda, you might miss out on an awesome prize!

Facilitating this year’s conference has been, and continues to be, an exciting challenge. We are confident you will find it informative, beneficial and exciting. However, none of this would be possible without all the hard work from many people. First, a big thanks to the three marvels from the Institute of Government at UCF: Susan Pruchnicki, Marilyn Crotty, and Michelle Gardner. They are always present and responding when we need assistance or guidance. There are not sufficient words in the English language to express the magnitude of their dedication to our efforts. Secondly, and far from least, a big thank you to the members of this year’s Program Committee who worked selflessly and tirelessly to put this conference together: Angii Kaiser (Lakeland), Cindy Drake (Wellington), Jackie Raes (Alachua County), Shelby Schaar (Clearwater), Steve Wyland (St Johns County), and Vicki Pratt-Boone (Tampa). Their commitment to our conference is the reason for its success. I look forward to seeing everyone in Tampa this June!

Ahoy, F.A.C.E. Members!

It is hard to believe that a year has almost passed. It has been a very busy year and the Education and Certification Committee has accomplished a great deal. You already know that we held a Train the Trainer Class in February of this year. Since then we have added three new Certified Trainers (CT’s) to our list and have six Assistant Trainers (AT’s) preparing to go through the tandem training to become Certified Trainers. The committee has met with the Directors of the five Universities in April to share the progress we have made with regard to the training program. They were very excited about what has been accomplished and have agreed to support our effort by giving our new CT’s an opportunity to train upcoming courses.

You may all be aware that you can access the Trainer Career Path on the Florida Association of Code Enforcement web page. All the information has been updated and now includes an orientation program for those who have met the requirements and completed an application to become Assistant Trainers. If you are interested in becoming a trainer please review the information. You may also contact me if you have any questions concerning the program or the process.

There is still a lot of work to be done. Keeping our educational materials up to date is a priority. The committee will begin its review of the education material in the next year. That review will require the involvement of all the existing trainers as well as the committee.

The committee recognizes that there is a need to provide alternative delivery methods in order to acquire continuing education hours. At the present time, limited online training is accepted if it is job related and proof of attendance can be provided. A subcommittee is going to be formed to look at creating a list of online courses that may be acceptable for continuing education hours. Forms will be made available at the conference for those who may be interested in participating on this or any other committee.

For those of you who are assistant trainers, certified trainers and mentors, don’t forget the Trainer’s Workshop that is being held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at the conference. I hope to see each of you there.

The Education and Certification Committee is here for your benefit. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with suggestions or other input. You can contact me via email at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

See you at the conference.

I want to thank you all for letting me serve as your Sergeant at Arms. I have learned so much the past few years serving on the legislative committee. One thing for sure is that it takes a tremendous amount of time working with the State Legislature to get a bill passed. This year we fell short again. At the last minute the representatives on the House side backed out. We had a lot of interest and felt that our chances were good. We are not giving up and we are planning to come back strong and get an early start and see if we can secure a sponsor for our education bill well before next year’s session starts. I am looking forward to see everyone at our upcoming training conference in June. This will be our 25th year and from what I have seen it’s going to be a great conference. David Shepp our lobbyist will be speaking at the conference and will bring us up to date and explain how our members can get involved in helping get an education bill passed.

Please reach out to your Florida House and Senate members and speak to them about our education bill. The legislative committee plans to hit them hard and secure sponsors well before next year’s session.

I want to thank my committee members, April Hartseil, Deborah Leigh and Joe Fenton for their service and dedication to F.A.C.E.

Secretary Lori Troxel

This year has flown by; I can’t believe how fast it has gone. I am pleased to announce we have completely digitized the Association’s documents. I have taken the opportunity to reorganize the filing on the computer and feel this so when Board members need something instead of searching in a dozen files they can just go to a category and find what they need. I have also been working on the Policy and Procedure Motions Manual, which has not been an easy task; the manual was started in 2007, and has not been updated since then. I am hoping to have this project completed by the Pre-Conference meeting on June 9, 2014, when we meet at the Tampa Marriott Waterside. Once this project is completed all future Secretaries of F.A.C.E. will have to do is add the motions from their meetings when they type up their minutes, transfer the new data to their flash drive, and update each Board members flash drive at the next meeting they have, Yeah!!! No more “oldtimers”…

This year the Board has worked together to achieve a lot. Our President Michael Titmuss, will be updating everyone at the Conference on all our successes this year, I am so proud and honored to have been a part of them. I am incredibly passionate in regards to our career choice and I want to make sure the State of Florida recognizes our profession someday. It is not an easy career choice, and often times it is thankless. Nevertheless I know we all serve our communities to the best of our abilities, and while serving on the Board this year, I feel I represented us all to the best of my ability. I have to say I don’t think I made very many friends this year, but at least the things I know needed to be said and actioned were said and actioned. I believe the Board was successful this year in bringing about positive changes to some of our most important programs, and I thank each one of them for the opportunity to weigh in on the topics.

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to register for the Conference this year, it is our 25th Anniversary and we should celebrate all of our successes together. Sam and his Committee along with Marilyn and Michelle from the IOG have been working hard to put on a great program, and Donna is working her magic again this year, to present our history to us. Don’t forget to bring your Pirate Costumes, you will be judged by Captain Hook himself I hear. Have a great summer, and I hope to see you at the Conference.

Past President Jim Dehne

As I sit here and write my final INTERFACE article as a board member of this great association, I wonder where the past 5 years have gone. We have jumped many hurdles, implemented some things that are very beneficial to the association, and are moving toward state recognition with a tremendous amount of hope and support. I would like to thank the membership for the confidence you have had in me to serve 5 years; the boards I have served with for always staying focused on moving F.A.C.E. forward; the IOG for the guidance along the way; and all of the other past presidents for their input on the issues they felt are important. I look forward to staying active in our association and seeing us continue to be the premier code enforcement association in the country.

Thank you for the support and I know you will continue to support the current and future boards as you have me.

Always remember, Be safe & train.

Webmaster Mark Caskie

There are exciting things happening on your website so take a look around. F.A.C.E. is working on cleaning up some things in the background, so here is how you can help.

Make sure your email address is correct in the F.A.C.E. membership system. It is important that all members add the email address [email protected] to your work email contacts to maximize delivery. If you are not receiving emails from this email address (we sent out several about the conference) you may need to work with your IT department to get this resolved. Make sure we are not blocked so we can send you information about your organization!

When was the last time you logged in and reviewed your information? The information you have in your personal member area is how we contact you for many things. If you are not getting any emails from F.A.C.E. then that is an indication that you have a problem that needs to be fixed. Did I mention you should add [email protected] to your email address contacts?

Chapters now each have their own page on the F.A.C.E. Website. By the time you get this newsletter I hope to have been in contact with your Chapter leadership and had the opportunity to get started on making Chapter pages work for you. Here a Chapter can list the jurisdictions that are members. Forms for new and renewing members can be posted here. Also news about upcoming Chapter events or training can be listed. Chapter Logo and pictures can be added. Again it’s your page let me know how I can make it work for you.

Chapters also can use the F.A.C.E. website as their email program to send out news about events or schedule changes. Chapters now will be fully integrated into Your website as the website works for you!

There will be a Website Table in the Vendor area at the Conference in June so stop by and visit. I can help you navigate through the system and show you how to look at your information or find contact info for one of your colleagues.

Interested in joining the Webmaster Committee?!? There is now a committee interest form you can fill out. It can be found in the sidebar on the “About” page on the website.

Need some help? Can’t find your way around the Website? Have a general question about F.A.C.E.? Answers are as close as the Contact Page on the Website. Don’t be afraid to use it!

One last thing, please Whitelist [email protected] so we can contact you in a timely manner!

Working for you in the background,

The Webmaster

During my year in office my committee and I were able to reach out to some jurisdictions and invite them back to F.A.C.E. We held our first ever Membership Drive it too was a success we had an increase in membership of about 250 from the previous year. My goals and commitment to this position are to increase membership, promote, and inform all members with most current information and further the efforts of our great profession of Code Enforcement.

I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve on the Board this past year as your Secretary.
