S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY VIEW FROM S T C A L N R N A THE CHAIR IN Y S SATURDAY 27TH APRIL 2019 GLE Welcome to everybody for this afternoon’s NCL Division 1 game against Featherstone Lions. Featherstone’s season is running similar to ours, they have won 2 from 5 played whereas we have won 3 from 6 played and in the table we are 7th and Featherstone 8th. Although beaten in our last two games, away at Skirlaugh and Milford, the team have been competitive and I should imagine those two teams will be knocking on the door for promotion come the season end. Dean Parker and Jack Vincent have both recently suffered serious ankle injuries and we wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back on the field soon. We also welcome Ash Yarrow back from his cultural trip to Thailand, Vietnam and Bali. Jon Norfolk has retired after 18 years as administrator of the Club please take time to read the insert in the programme. He has done a fantastic job. Nick Norfolk has taken over from Jon as club administrator and Janice Cogle and Tan Hudson are now joint Bar Managers. Ok, there will have been, so I hope readers will have some forbearance regarding this week’s offering, especially as I’m really making a general point. The Parksiders went into the end of March heading the Betfred League 1 table with four victories in many outings and they were good value for that record (I would say that, wouldn’t I, but I stand by the assessment). So confidence was high for the visit of Betfred Championship side Halifax on the last day of that month in the fourth round of the Coral Challenge Cup. That confidence wasn’t misplaced, but Halifax won the game 28-24, a result that sorely tested the mantra of my old captain at the Middleton Arms, Pete Kitching, which I only came around to understanding after several years, that the best team always wins. Seven days later, Hunslet went to Whitehaven, and lost 16-12. Again, and taking nothing away from the Cumbrians, this was a game that “got away” from Head Coach Gary Thornton and his players, especially as winger Dale Bloomfield had a try ruled out for reasons that, according to reports, had folk perplexed. So Hunslet, after a week’s break, headed to Oldham on Good Friday seeking to avoid a third successive defeat. Another reverse looked very much on the cards when the Roughyeds headed into the closing stages of the contest 26-18 ahead, especially as the Parksiders were down to twelve men. But, somehow, Hunslet had the better of the business end of the match, and returned to south Leeds reflecting on a superb 36-28 victory. And my point? Well, it’s a general one really. That last win has certainly ensured that spirits remain high at Hunslet, but I’m not sure that would be the case if Oldham had prevailed. Three successive defeats can all too often lead to the more fragile supporters, at any club in any sport, questioning their coach’s or manager’s future, which to my mind is an unacceptably volatile approach, but that’s how it is. On the other hand Thornton, while obviously happy to avoid a third successive defeat, could quite easily be reflecting right now on all three of those matches having been won – although if Halifax had been beaten, Hunslet would of course have been involved in a fifth round Challenge Cup tie in the middle of that sequence. It all goes to show, for me, what a nervy existence coaching is, at any level, including in the Kingstone Press National Conference League. One incident goes your way, and you win. Another goes against you, and you lose. If three successive games are won through such episodes, you’re the best thing since sliced bread. If they go against you, some people will be calling for your head. This is where people of calm, strong character are needed at board or committee level, I think. • Sound Recording in the British Folk Revival: Ideology, Discourse and Practice, 1950–1975
Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters.

It analyses how policy and practice has developed, and articulates the need for an alternative approach. It draws from the social model as applied in the fields of disability and mental health, to begin to sketch out more hopeful and progressive possibilities for children, families and communities. The social model specifically draws attention to the economic, environmental and cultural barriers faced by people with differing levels of (dis)ability, but has not been used to think about ‘child protection’, an area of work in England that is dominated by a focus on risk and risk aversion. This area has paid limited attention to the barriers to ensuring children and young people are cared for safely within families and communities, and the social determinants of much of the harms they experience have not been recognised because of the focus on individualised risk factors. key words child protection • risk • parenting • social model Introduction In this article we argue that it is time to question a child protection project that colludes with a view that the greatest threats to children’s safety and wellbeing are posed by their parents or carers’ intentional negligence or abuse.

  • Informal Popular Music Learning Practice and Their Relevance for Formal Music Educators
17 INFORMAL POPULAR MUSIC LEARNING PRACTICE AND THEIR RELEVANCE FOR FORMAL MUSIC EDUCATORS Lucy Green Institute of Education, University of London Introduction I would like to start by listening to the opening of a song. It is performed by Nanette Welmans, an English popular musician who I interviewed as part of a study on how popular musicians learn. Nanette does all the singing on the recording, including the backing vocals; she plays all the instruments and she mixed the recording herself. She also composed the music and wrote the lyrics. Like the majority of popular musicians, she had hardly any formal music education at all. She had taken a few piano lessons when she was ten years old, but gave up because in her words: ‘I just couldn’t relate to them, at all’. She became a professional singer at the age of 17, but only went to a singing teacher later. She had two separate periods of taking lessons, mainly concentrating on diaphragm breathing. At the time of creating this song, she did not know how to read notation; and it emerged after the interview that she had notation dyslexia. She had never had any education in composition, form, harmony or counterpoint. There are three main questions I wish to address in this presentation. Firstly, how did she, and other musicians like her, go about the informal processes of acquiring their skills and knowledge; secondly, what kinds of attitudes and values did they bring to their learning experiences; thirdly, and more briefly, to what extent might it be beneficial to incorporate these learning practices into the formal environment of the general school music classroom? The research involved detailed interviews and some observations with 14 popular musicians living in and around London, UK, aged 15 to 50.
