S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 24TH MARCH 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Saddleworth for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. Honours were even last time we played in 2016, Saddleworth winning at their place 42 – 22 and we got the points at home 16 – 10. The season has really had a shocking start weather wise for some clubs, this is only Saddleworths second game of the season and no doubt they will be hoping to get off the mark after a defeat at Askam two weeks ago. We have been more fortunate with no postponements but after our flier in the first game away at Leigh East we have come a bit unstuck with defeats at home to Moor and away last week at St Judes. We really should have had the points against Dewsbury but for a poor second half showing. No doubt the coaches have been working on things (given chance to train) and hopefully the optimism after that first win will return. Well done to the Alliance team in their victory in the 40/20 cup last week over Worth Village, 64 – 4. Unfortunately due to the weather, that cup competition has now been abandoned for the season. Saturday 31st March will be a memorial day for Phil Wartley. All sorts going on throughout, see advert for details further on in the programme. Rearranged date again for the cultural afternoon, Sunday 15th April, 4.00pm, a play produced by the Red Ladder Theatre Company, “Playing the Joker”. This is about Eddie Waring and stars Jamie Jones Buchanan The production has got excellent reviews so one not to be missed. Tickets are strictly limited, on sale now behind the bar at £3. Congratulations to Brian Sowden on winning the Outstanding Service to Sport Award at the recent Sport Awards. I am sure everybody will agree it is a fitting tribute to all the work he has put in to the club over the last 38 years or so. IRRIGATION FUND - We are still raising funds for the irrigation system which will be getting installed in mid June. For a £50 donation you will have your name/message on your own plaque in the foyer (subject to a character limit). See Jon or Tom if you are interested. Have a look at the plaques already in place. Club Lotto - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. FORTHCOMING HOME FIXTURES Thursday 29th March – Rhinos U19 v Castleford – 7.00pm Saturday 31st March – Rhinos U16 v Wigan – 12.00pm Saturday 7th April – 1st Team v Drighlington – 2.30pm Saturday 7th April – Academy v Hunslet Warriors – 2.30 (TBC) For junior, youth and ladies games see the club web site WE ARE A FAMILY CLUB SO PLEASE MODERATE YOUR LANGUAGE WHILST WATCHING THE GAME. A reminder from the league that the only people allowed in the dug outs are the head coach, assistant coach, physio and 4 substitutes. Penalties for breaching this will be severe. Spectators must remain behind the barriers and refrain from encroaching on to the field of play at any time whilst play is in progress. Supporting the family & its community

Registered in England Number 130435 Registered Office Address: Westgate Brewery, Wakefield, , WF2 9SW S A VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE SIDELINES INGLEY BY PHIL HODGSON I was able to watch live TV coverage of a Kingstone Press National Conference League game for the first time on Saturday and it’s a concept that, without question, has legs. The game between Lock Lane and Lions was something special anyway, given the local rivalry between the two sides, but the fact that the match was played in snow added greatly to the atmosphere – for me, anyway – in what was a vivid reminder of days gone by. Most importantly, the all-round coverage was very good. Trevor Hunt – the Conference chairman as it happens – is a seasoned commentator, particularly on radio, and his well-honed expertise shone through. Hunt’s co-host, Mick Morgan, is a one-off, a very funny bloke who, at luncheons and dinners, has often left me feeling sorry for whichever comedian is unfortunate enough to be following him. Like Hunt, though, Morgie also knows Rugby League through and through and offered several pertinent points of the kind that seem obvious when made, but which had not necessarily occurred to anyone else. For example, when the Lions put in a flighted kick on the last tackle, Mick expressed bewilderment, insisting that both teams should focus on booting the ball along the ground, where anything could happen, especially if it got stuck in the snow. Correct, Morgy, but not something either team (or me, as it happens) appeared to have thought of. I didn’t see the game from the very start, but pitch-side contributions by Rugby AM co-founders Alex Simmons and Jamie Jones-Buchanan, together with guest star , were informative and entertaining, while some nice cameo moments were provided by former Warrington star Paul Wood, who was despatched to obtain the observations of members of the very healthy crowd. The camera work and overall production was also very good, while Lock Lane deserve huge credit for getting the game on at all, and the Lions should be given massive plaudits for agreeing to a switch of venue when the Millpond proved to be unfit. Above all, the players, match officials and coaches warrant high praise for serving up a superb spectacle. I, and many others, have long maintained that amateur Rugby League offers action just as compelling as that in the professional game, including in Super League - maybe more so - and here was the evidence to back up such claims. The grassroots game, in fact, is superior, as a spectacle, to any other sport, certainly soccer, which at a low level is pretty much unwatchable in my opinion. I think Simmons, Jones-Buchanan, Hunt and Morgan are on to a collective winner, and I can see Saturday teatime viewing of games in the Kingstone Press National Conference League becoming essential viewing for folk way beyond the world of grassroots Rugby League. In fact I reckon the programme could become a huge cult favourite for sports fans throughout the land, indeed the world, if smartly marketed (or, even better, if news of it spreads by word of mouth). Next up, I believe, is today’s Division One game between York Acorn and Dudley Hill. My advice is, stay behind in the clubhouse, wherever you are, and don’t miss a single minute of the action (other, of course, than when you’re getting served at the bar).
