Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 5th October 2017 Only 3 weeks until the first game! #190b C’mon the Kiwis By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan O POINT beating around the bush, and yes I have heard all about Jason Taumalolo, David Fusitu’a and NManu Ma’u, but the Kiwis are my team and you have to get on with it, so onwards and upwards. It’s not like the Aussies aren’t suffering the same thing, with Andrew Fifita opting for Tonga ahead of the Kan- garoos. As I drove home last night Radio Sport was going off, with all sorts of opinions about the North Queensland Cowboy’s decision to play for Tonga ahead of the Kiwis, and then of course with Thursday’s defections, many are arguing the Kiwis are a shambles. Well if they are, they are my shambles, and come October when the ball gets kicked off at Mt Smart I will still be in the stand, and I will still be cheering for the boys. I have had the pleasure of meeting our coach David Kidwell many times, and he is a great bloke, but simpler than that, he is the coach and I will back him to do the best job he can. There are still some real positives for me in the Kiwis side. Simon Mannering is named, and there had been plenty of talk that he would not make it, with the Kiwis opt- ing for a rapid-fire game that might not suit his style.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 21st September 2016 Newsletter #140 By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan RIKEY DID the Vodafone Warriors get hammered at the weekend. The constant theme was that we Cneed a player clearout. That is hardly groundbreaking stuff, but what was, was that players were named. Hugh McGahan singled out Manu Vatuvei and Ben Matulino, arguing both had failed to live up their status as two of our highest paid players. The former Kiwi captain said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney could make a mark by showing the pair the door, and proving to the others that poor performances won't be tolerated. “Irrespective of his standing, Manu Vatuvei has got to go,” McGahan told Tony Veitch. “And again, irre- spective of his standing, Ben Matulino has got to go. They have underperformed. If you're going to make an impact I'd say that's probably the two players that you would look at.” Bold stuff, and fair play to the man, he told it like he saw it. Kearney, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t see it the same way, since he named both in the Kiwis train-on squad, and while he acknowledged they had struggled this year, he backed himself to get the best out of them. In fact he went further, he said it was his job. “That's my responsibility as the coach, to get the individuals in a position so they can go out and play their best.

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

  • My Mother Found Me in Alice Springs
THE MAN WHO EXPLODED WITH FIRE AND GRACE Wally McArthur 22 February 2019 A top athlete denied a chance to compete for Olympic Gold, Wally McArthur lived at “The Bungalow” in Alice Springs before being evacuated to NSW during WW2. After the war he went to St Francis House in Adelaide, became a rugby star in England and was a member of the Aboriginal rugby league team of the century. Wally McArthur was a rising sprinting champion in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Wally McArthur was an inspiration. His younger cousin John Moriarty, who was taken from the same Borroloola area of the Northern Territory, has said, “He could have been one of the world’s great athletes. He just exploded with fire and grace.” “He was a leader. He looked after us younger kids. He was such a humble compassionate person. Wally set a standard for us, as to what could be achieved in sport.” Born in 1933 McArthur’s father was a policeman named Langdon, but the authorities, who registered many of these births, gave him the name of McArthur, after the river at Borroloola. McArthur recalled his removal from his family in a 1998 interview with John Pilger, “It was a government car, because only the government had cars at that time. The driver put me in the front seat with him and he drove around while I waved at my family. I have never seen them since, you know. They were sitting around the camp fire. They didn't understand what was happening.” In a 1999 interview with Peter Hackett for The Advertiser McArthur said, “I don’t feel angry about it.
