S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY VIEW FROM S T C A L N R N A THE CHAIR IN Y S FRIDAY 10TH MAY 2019 GLE Welcome to everybody for tonight’s NCL Division 1 game against . A big thanks to everybody concerned at Saddleworth for agreeing to play this fixture on a Friday evening. We visited Saddleworth last season, the first time we had played them since the old clubhouse was demolished, the new clubhouse and changing rooms are fantastic and amongst the best in the NCL. Well done to all those involved in these improvements. Last season’s games we had the edge over Saddleworth beating them at home 34-14 and a very close encounter away, winning a hard fought and entertaining game 19-18. Along with ourselves and Dewsbury Moor, Saddleworth were promoted last year via the play offs were they defeated Crosfields in the final. They were the form team in the 2nd half of the season having lost their first 7 games. Today’s game will be a close encounter we are just above Saddleworth in the league having played 8 and won 3, with our visitors having played 7 and drawn 1. It just shows the step up in level in this league as all 3 of last year’s promoted teams are at the wrong end of the table. Our disappointing form continued against Oulton last week losing out 30-16 picking up further injury’s along the way. Our Alliance team fought out a hard earned away draw against Stainland 12-12. Congratulations to our Ladies team on progressing to the next round of the at the expense of Featherstone Lionesses. They have been rewarded with a home tie against opposition St. Helens on Sunday 26th May. Make this a date in your diary and come and support and cheer them on. Credit to Whippet and Dean who are doing a great job in coaching and recruiting players. Enjoy the game. FORTHCOMING HOME FIXTURES Saturday 18th May - Alliance v York Acorn - 2.30pm Sunday 26th May - Ladies v St. Helens - 2pm Saturday 1st June - Rhinos 19’s v Warrington - 12pm Saturday 1st June - First team v Normanton - 2.30pm For junior, youth and ladies games see the club web site WE ARE A FAMILY CLUB SO PLEASE MODERATE YOUR LANGUAGE WHILST WATCHING THE GAME. A reminder from the league that the only people allowed in the dug outs are the head coach, assistant coach, physio and 4 substitutes. Penalties for breaching this will be severe. Spectators must remain behind the barriers and refrain from encroaching on to the field of play at any time whilst play is in progress. join our team...

Schoey was reflecting on the deeds of – who is, as it happens, another Hunslet lad – and in one passage called him Billy Whizz, the soubriquet bestowed on the player by his adoring fans. It was a fitting nickname (I suppose most are, when you think about it, otherwise they wouldn’t stick). Not too many seem to be used these days, although I suspect that once I’ve fired this article off to clubs several will drift into my consciousness. It wasn’t always the case. The Northern Union era had several stars who were given nicknames, one of my favourites being ’s. The giant centre, who helped Hunslet to All Four Cups glory in 1907-08 before transferring to Hull, who reportedly paid him what was then the huge sum of £14 per week, was known as `The Forceful Youth From Kinsley’ while , under whom emulated Hunslet’s feat in 1914-15, was hailed as `The Prince of Centres’. The fine winger of the 1930s, Eric Harris, was dubbed `The Toowoomba Ghost’ in homage, as with Batten, to the place from whence he came. Across the Channel the great French Puig Aubert of the 1950s was referred to as `Pipette’ because of his chain- smoking (legend has it that he wore shorts which had pockets in which he kept a packet of cigarettes and a box of matches so he could light up during lulls in play). During that decade, and into the 1960s, Vince Karalius, the awesome Great Britain, St Helens and Widnes loose forward, earned the nickname `The Wild Bull of the Pampas’ while Wigan’s fantastic winger was known as `The Brown Bomber’ although perhaps in this day and age that term couldn’t be used. Wigan, come to think of it, tend to be in the forefront of giving their players affectionate alternative names. Their fine scrum- half of the 1980s, , was called `Popeye’, his arms being like the cartoon character’s (I assume that was the reason) while was dubbed `Chariots’ although that obvious nickname was bestowed on him in his Widnes days. Talking of Widnes, the club’s notable capture from Welsh rugby union in the late 1980s, Jonathan Davies, soon became known as `Jiffy’ while, similarly, the wonderful , Hull KR and Great Britain halfback of the 1960s and 1970s, , was described as `Roger the Dodger’, initially by TV commentator Eddie Waring, who liked to lead the way in such matters. Alan Hardisty, whose presence at Wheldon Road led to Castleford deciding to sell Millward, was known as `Chuck’, incidentally. Another Cas man, Dean Sampson, was called `Diesel’ (something to do with having filled up his dad’s lorry with the wrong fuel!) while, these days, the great Australian hooker is known as `The Accountant’ because, well, he looks like one. I’m sure readers will already be thinking of many more examples.
