Defeat against Keighiey was abitter piii to swaiiow and certainiy the score flatters them as we were uniucky to iose the game but the difference was that they piayed the smarter footbaii on the night, both when they were in front and when they were behind. They never panicked, even when we had them under pressure, and that is the sign of agood side. It was the same against Dewsbury eariier in the season when we iost by 2points. It is no coincidence that those two sides are now second and first in the League respectively. Our lads have to gain experience from those type of matches to be able to use it to their advantage in similar situations in the future. Mike Ford has mentioned recently that at times there has been alack of self belief amongst the players and that they have to become more arrogant (on the pitch!!). The players have, without ashadow of adoubt, done tremendously well so far this season and its down to them and their hard work. We are not in afalse position in the League we are there because we have accumulated more points than the teams below us and that is the reward for the commitment and hard work that they have all put in. Ihave tremendous belief in the players and what we can achieve with them. They know that because it was discussed with each of them prior to them signing. As we enter the last third of the season the lads can use what they have done so far as aspringboard for further progress -WELL DONE BOYS -KEEP IT UP. Iwould like to welcome Alan Stoker and all his colleagues from Barrow for today’s game which although, on paper, should be ahome banker as Barrow have struggled away from home, Iam sure will be as difficult as it always is, as they will no doubt be trying even harder to turn their results on their travels around. As we have said before games are coming thick and fast in May and your support is vital. Please keep up the noise. Enjoy the game. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

A big thanks to everybody concerned at Saddleworth for agreeing to play this fixture on a Friday evening. We visited Saddleworth last season, the first time we had played them since the old clubhouse was demolished, the new clubhouse and changing rooms are fantastic and amongst the best in the NCL. Well done to all those involved in these improvements. Last season’s games we had the edge over Saddleworth beating them at home 34-14 and a very close encounter away, winning a hard fought and entertaining game 19-18.

  • Castleford Tigers Visa World Club Championship 1997
CASTLEFORD TIGERS VISA WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 1997 In the mid 1990s, the game of Rugby League was in a state of upheaval in Australia, as Kerry Packer's Optus Vision and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation battled for the broadcasting rights and ultimately control of the top-level professional Rugby League in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time, several teams broke away from the Australian Rugby League (ARL) to form a separate competition called Superleague(SL) and in 1997 a World Club Championship competition was held between all the Superleague teams in Australia and Europe. The games were played on a home and away basis with the top 6 teams in the European league each playing 3 teams from Australia and New Zealand. The other 6 teams playing 2 teams from Australia. The early matches were played in groups, the leading teams in each group then progressed to sudden death play-offs. As Castleford Tigers were in the lower half of the League, they were selected to play 2 teams, Hunter Mariners and Perth Western Reds. These were newly created teams which existed for only a short period. Nevertheless, they did possess some very good players. The competition was very expensive to run and was far from a success, with low attendances at the games and estimated financial losses of about 5 million Australian dollars. The Southern Hemisphere teams proved far too strong for their European counterparts and many matches were too one-sided to be competitive. In Round One, Wigan were the only Northern Hemisphere team to win their match.
