08 Caring for someone with dementia

Caring for someone can be difficult, even more so when the person you are caring for has dementia. Barbara Warnes, 69 from Horsforth, has been a carer for her husband Ken, who has dementia, for the past five years. We asked her what it is like being one of the 70,000 unpaid carers in Leeds… What were the first signs of Ken having dementia? Ken started noticing that he was forgetting things, like finishing sentences and when driving he was forgetting his way around. He was getting worried each time he drove and started to lose his confidence in driving, so he decided it would be best for him not to drive. Ken then went to see his GP who referred him to specialist at Towngate House in Guiseley and he was diagnosed with dementia at an early stage.
