eeds Rhinos will be looking to create a little bit Lof history on Sunday 1 March by becoming the first ever side in the 33 year history of the Carnegie to win back-to-back world titles ....

However, if they are to succeed in rewriting the record books then they are going to have to do it the hard way by beating Manly Sea Eagles, a team who thrashed last year’s Carnegie World Club Challenge finalists in the NRL Grand Final 40-0.

This will be the third time in the last five years that the Rhinos have appeared in the contest to decide the best club side in the world and they will take confidence from the fact that Leeds United’s stadium, the venue for this year’s encounter, has proved a lucky stamping ground for them previously.

In 2005 they claimed their first Carnegie World Club Challenge at the venue defeating Canterbury Bulldogs 39-32 and last year they beat Melbourne Storm in atrocious weather conditions 11-4.

Brian McClennan, Leeds Rhinos’ coach, said, “It’s fantastic that we’re going to be able to pit our wits against one of the biggest names in World Rugby League whilst also having the opportunity to make history by becoming the first team to win back-to-back world titles.

“Manly are a formidable outfit and ooze class throughout their side. As well as the players they have in the Australian World Cup squad they also have players like and Matt Orford who won the Dally M award this year.

“This is a big city occasion and in the past Elland Road has proved very lucky not only for myself but also the Rhinos. Hopefully we can continue our winning streak there next year in front of a full- house.”

For Manly it will be the first time they have appeared in a Carnegie World Club Challenge since 1987 when they lost 8-2 to Wigan in front of 36,000 fans at .

Coached by , a member of the 1987 Manly team, the Sea Eagles includes eight players who were involved in the Rugby League World Cup as well as former St Helens centre Jamie Lyon and Matt Orford, this year’s winner of the Dally M award, Australia’s equivalent of the Man of Steel.

Manly Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler said, “As shown with their two Grand Final triumphs and last year’s victory over Melbourne Storm, Leeds Rhinos are a big game team who will present a huge challenge for us in our attempt to be crowned Carnegie World Club Challenge Champions.

“The quality of their team is shown by the fact that they had so many players in the squad. We’re taking this game extremely seriously and will be flying into the UK well before 1 March in order to get used to the conditions.”

In preparation for the Carnegie World Club Challenge match against Leeds Rhinos, Manly Sea Eagles will play a warm-up game against Harlequins RL at the Twickenham Stoop on 19 February.

Tickets for the Carnegie World Club Challenge match between Leeds Rhinos and Manly Sea Eagles are now on-sale from the RFL Box Office with prices starting from £20 for adults, £10 for concessions.

New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney told Sky Sports 2, “It was a wonderful effort tonight, we put them in a place they’re not used to.

“It was just a matter of keeping them in an arm wrestle and the first 15 minutes of the second half were very important. I’m just overwhelmed.”

Benji Marshall added, “From where I’ve come from, with all my injuries, to come here and pull it off, I’m just stoked.”

- 24 - RUGBY LEAGUE BULLETIN RUGBY LEAGUE BULLETIN - 25 - Improving Fast he South Africa Rhinos arrived on Tthese shores in early October for a two week tour which saw them play four games, culminating with a Test Match against BARLA Great Britain ....

Amongst their busy schedule the Rhinos attended the engage at , visited The George Hotel, Huddersfield, “The Birthplace of Rugby League”, and attended Civic Receptions at St Helens, Barrow, and Hull. They also found time to visit local schools in those areas.

The tourists took to the field just 24 hours after arriving in the UK and the new facilities at the Leigh Sporting Village proved a fantastic venue for their clash with Lancashire. Around 500 spectators witnessed the Rhinos produce a gallant display before they tired and the hosts ran out comfortable winners by 55 points 12.

Amongst the interested observers were former BARLA legends John Fieldhouse, Des Drummond, and - himself a former Young Player of the Year.

Undeterred by their defeat, the South Africans moved on to Cumbria for the next leg of their trip.

Craven Park - home of National League side – staged game two of the tour which saw the Rhinos deliver a much improved display. A crowd of over 800 were on hand to see the visitors battle back from a 32-12 deficit at the interval, to push Cumbria all the way before losing out 44-34 in a thrilling encounter.

The Rhinos performance was based on some superb handling, with Rynard Pretorious the main benefactor as he crossed for a hat trick and the father and son half back pairing of Heinrich (47) and Hennie (23) Rademeyer impressing.

Game three saw the tourists move south to the “White Rose” county of Yorkshire.

A comprehensive display at “Tetley’s Stadium” from Yorkshire meant that South Africa were always going to find it tough and despite been cheered on by a crowd approaching four figures, Yorkshire proved to be too strong and ran out 66-6 victors.

- 26 - RUGBY LEAGUE BULLETIN RUGBY LEAGUE BULLETIN - 27 - “As well as bringing our standards in line with other high-profile sports, the improvements Building in coaching will lead to improvements in playing standards, producing high quality Bridges future players for the UK’s national squads.” ore than 330 Rugby League Coaches across the MNorth West have either completed or are registered to undertake the “bridging” process between the old Rugby League Coaching Awards and the new UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level Two as the sport continues to make dramatic improvements to its Coaching standards nationally ....

Approximately 31 per cent of the area’s existing modified, club and senior Coaches will have made the switch by the end of June 2009.

60 Coaches have completed and successfully passed their bridging course across the country with 237 Coaches registered to bridge in Yorkshire, whilst it is expected that 50 coaches in London will be registered to bridge before March 2009

The encouraging figures come after some tremendous work from the region’s Club and Coach Development Officers (CCDOs). They identified 670 active Coaches across the North West and are now attempting to ‘bridge’ each individual to the UKCC Level Two award.

Dave Johnson, the RFL’s North West Coach Development Manager, said “The implementation of the UKCC qualifications in Rugby League is a necessary step to improve standards of coaching within the game.

“As well as bringing our standards in line with other high-profile sports, the improvements in coaching will lead to improvements in playing standards, producing high quality future players for the UK’s national squads.”

The RFL and the National Sports Foundation have managed to reduce the cost of the “bridging” process from £100 to £50 until December 2008, making the scheme even more attractive for Rugby League’s current coaches.

Coupled with a programme designed by the RFL’s coaching department to maximise tutor support, time and input for those making the switch, it’s easy to see why there has already been such a large uptake.

Mr Johnson added “The pro-active nature of the region’s CCDOs, who regularly contact clubs and Coaches to drive the process forward, has been a major factor behind the success we have seen so far.

“Their efforts are then backed up by the hard work of the support staff within the RFL’s Coaching Department, who are quick to register courses and provide assistance and guidance for individuals throughout the process.

“The third point to stress is the importance of the funding agreement between the RFL and the National Sports Foundation, but none of these things would have any impact without the commitment of the region’s clubs and coaching workforce to up-skill and improve their standards.

“Their drive and determination to be the best they can be is the real success story behind these figures.”

For Coaches wondering what the new qualification entails, the region’s CCDOs who are supported by Sport England funding will start by explaining the information needed to “bridge” the knowledge gap between the old award and the UKCC qualification.

Candidates will then complete theory and practical exams while being assessed by an independent member of the CCDO group.

Following the candidate’s successful completion of the course requirements, they will then be issued with the new UKCC qualification, which is valid for three years.
