Sir Peter Leitch | Newsletter
THE ACTION KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY NIGHT Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 24th October 2017 It’s 4 days until the Kiwis play # their first game of the 2017 RLWC 193 Back The Kiwis By Enjoying Lunch By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan E ARE only days from the kick-off of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with Australia and England W– in what will be a hell of a match - doing the honours on Friday night. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them. -

A big thanks to everybody concerned at Saddleworth for agreeing to play this fixture on a Friday evening. We visited Saddleworth last season, the first time we had played them since the old clubhouse was demolished, the new clubhouse and changing rooms are fantastic and amongst the best in the NCL. Well done to all those involved in these improvements. Last season’s games we had the edge over Saddleworth beating them at home 34-14 and a very close encounter away, winning a hard fought and entertaining game 19-18. -

Today, we welcome the players, supporters and officials from Shaw Cross Sharks, for today’s Kingstone Press NCL Division Two Round Ten game. Half back Callum Barker is Shaw Cross Sharks leading try-scorer with 8, whilst Luke Hudson has picked up 2 man of the match awards. Our visitors are currently lying next to bottom in the division and have lost their last four games. We must be aware, though, that these were against the teams lying 2nd to 5th in the table and Shaw Cross Sharks will provide a good account of themselves today. Crosfields are lying mid-table having won 4 and lost 5. We have lost our last two outings, but like our visitors, we will be hoping to return to winning ways today. Jack Reid is the stats man, so far. Leading the try scoring with 7, the goal scoring with 34 and therefore the points scoring with 96. -

The court is asked to determine the meaning(s) of the words complained of in this libel action by way of preliminary issue. It is generally thought that such hearings are likely to become more common in future, having regard to the recent removal of the (qualified) “right” to jury trial. This was brought about by the amendment to s.69(1) of the Senior Courts Act 1981 contained in s.11 of the Defamation Act 2013. (See e.g. the observations of Tugendhat J in Cruddas v Calvert [2013] EWHC 1427 (QB), at [100], and the commentary in Gatley on Libel & Slander (12th edn) at para 30.14.) SIR DAVID EADY Johnston v League Publications Ltd Approved Judgment In this instance, it was Tugendhat J who made provision for the preliminary issue in an order dated 25 November 2013. 2. Where a judge is called upon to determine meaning, it is important that there should be clarity as to the scope of enquiry.
