A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBIS

Rabbi Amy Feder Rabbi Michael Alper [email protected] [email protected]

Preparing for the holiest time of the year during what is one First, before you settle in at home to watch services, we of the strangest years in our history, we have been asking encourage you to create a mikdash m’at, a holy place. Surround ourselves: how can we possibly facilitate authentic, meaningful yourself with objects that connect you to faith: photos, ritual High Holy Days when so much is different? When we can’t sit objects, heirlooms. Consider dressing as you might normally in the same seats we sit in each year, when we don’t have for High Holy Day services, or perhaps choosing to try wearing prayerbooks in our hands, when we can’t sing with each other, traditional white. The essential prayers are in this Dateline to when we aren’t in our spiritual home? It has been a daunting keep services participatory, so keep it safe or print out the email task, and one that rabbis around the world have spent the past version we’ll send you soon. Each of these steps can help make months debating, stressing over, and mourning. But as the your home a mikdash m’at. inevitability of virtual services became clearer, we’ve also seen that perhaps, this year has given us opportunities to experience Second, and perhaps more importantly, we encourage you to the holidays in ways that may be more meaningful than ever approach these holidays with kavanah. Kavanah is the Hebrew before. word for direction or intention, and we are taught that even if you say all of the prayers “correctly,” they’re empty if they We’ve all heard the phrases “unprecedented” or “new normal” aren’t said with kavanah. If our hearts are directed towards God, countless times since the spring, yet if we look at Jewish toward each other, this kavanah is what will make our prayers history, nothing we’re experiencing is totally new. When the meaningful on these holiest days. ancient Temple was destroyed in Jerusalem, people asked how they could possibly connect to God and pray together when their Let us enter these holidays, each in our mikdash m’at, with focus, sacred space was inaccessible. The rabbis had an answer. They faith, and kavanah, so that whatever the new year brings, we taught that when we don’t have a physical place where everyone have the direction, strength, and spirit to face it together. can be, each of our homes can become a mikdash m’at, a holy place. Neither God nor community could ever be so limited that we could only go to one place to experience them. So too for us, this year our homes can become holy places in which we will Shanah tovah! bring in the new year, physically separate yet experiencing our traditions and rituals, our prayers and community still together.

Over the past weeks, we have worked carefully to craft Rabbi Amy Rabbi Michael services that will bring together the familiar songs, prayers, and experiences each of us needs to make the High Holy Days feel like our own, while understanding that some things need to be changed or abbreviated to allow people to comfortably share them. We’ve also created new opportunities that you can experience at home. What we ask of you is two things.

HIGH HOLY DAYS GUIDE / 2 Page It has been a year unlike any other. In mid-March, the world abruptly closed its doors, and, in what felt like an instant, we were separated from our neighbors, friends, and loved ones in fear of a spreading pandemic. At Temple Israel, this has pushed us to ask big questions about who we are, what we do, and the purpose we serve when we can’t gather in person. Through those conversations two things became very clear. Our congregants need TI more than ever; and more than ever, TI needs our congregants. And it is our distinct, unique beliefs and values as a congregation that help us navigate the best ways to serve our members during these uncertain times.

COMMUNITY Because we believe that authentic, personal relationships are the basis of our caring community, we are working to provide ways to safely nurture them. We’re connecting seniors to youth through our pen pal program, hosting weekly online Onegs to mingle before Shabbat, and calling our most vulnerable members to say hello and find out how we can best meet their current needs.

CONNECTION We’re creating ways to connect in celebration and in mourning. Though we remain socially distanced, our Rabbis continue to officiate at times of simchas and sadness; weddings, B’nai Mitzvah, Hebrew namings and funerals cannot be stopped by a pandemic. Singing Mi Shebeirachs over the phone, answering late night texts from members feeling scared or anxious, shedding tears of joy naming babies over Facetime; we are connected now more than ever.

INCLUSION Hosting online programs have enabled many congregants to attend who otherwise would not be able to in person at our building. From seniors who can’t drive to an evening program, to parents who struggle to their children out of jammies on a Sunday morning – now everyone can participate, and their participation only makes us more vibrant.

LEARNING Jewish education continues – our youngest children are enjoying videos of their teachers singing songs, reading books, and giving lessons as we gear up to safely open our early childhood program. Religious School and Hebrew School will resume online this fall, and our virtual adult learning opportunities are helping us all to explore difficult questions and wrestle with life’s current challenges.

WORSHIP Services are streamed each week on our website and Facebook page, and they are just as participatory, joyful, musical, and intergenerational as we sing and pray along at home. We’ve had more people than ever join us for online services, which has created an incredible sense of community as guests welcome each other in the comments section with a “Shabbat Shalom.” And this year, we are creating meaningful High Holy Days services that will be available online and by phone so that we may all enjoy holiday worship together.

REPAIR OF THE WORLD Our responsibility to change the world for the better has inspired a social action task force who are working to identify injustices and examine our beliefs, our biases, and our practices as Americans and as . And we continue to support those in need by collecting food donations and personal care items, and by being a force for social good.

CHANGE Change is inevitable, and being Reform Jews means that we are constantly reexamining our faith and practice. Just like we’ve done throughout our history, we’re taking these challenges as opportunities for change. And as we continue to explore outside- of-the-box ways to bring us closer, we know that the months ahead will pose more challenges, which we’ll come together to tackle as a community.

Our congregants need us more than ever; and more than ever, we need you, too. Since our building closed almost 6 months ago, the income we rely on to provide classes and programs, Shabbat and High Holy Days worship, Rabbinical services and community support has greatly dwindled. Your contribution to this High Holy Days giving opportunity will allow us to live our beliefs and values year-round and serve this amazing Temple community no matter where we are and what the challenge. Let’s tackle this together! Visit WWW.TI-STL.ORG/GIVING and join the campaign today!

HIGH HOLY DAYS SERVICES MUSICIANS TEMPLE ISRAEL’S CHAVURAT SHIRA QUARTET Temple Israel’s Chavurat Shira Choir started as a group of friends (chavurah) who wanted to sing (shir) together, and is comprised of volunteer members of our community, all of whom bring both beautiful voices and an understanding of what it means to truly pray on the High Holy Days at Temple Israel. This year, since we cannot be in the building together, we have special virtual performances by the Quartet. Quartet vocalists include Amy Cohen, Ed Goldberg, Debbie Schultz, and Ron Van Fleet lll.

RUACH BAND The Ruach Band is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Rob Aronson, vocalist Julie Aronson, cellist/bassist Jordan Mandel, and pianist/percussionist Chris Rowton. Ruach means “spirit”, and they bring spirited, current music to inspire others to lift their own voices and sing along. Rob, Julie, and Jordan are all active Temple Israel members, and together with Chris, they have been leading joyous musical services, both on monthly and on the High Holy Days since 2013.

DANIEL VIZER, PIANIST Daniel Vizer, our Chavurat Shira Choir pianist will join us again this year to accompany other musicians during High Holy Days services.

MEGAN “MISS MEGAN” STURDEVANT Miss Megan has served as Music Teacher at Temple Israel’s Deutsch Early Childhood Center since 2011 and is a beloved song leader and performer in our Temple community. She also leads our Tot Shabbats and shares musical content online on TI’s social media for all kids and their families to enjoy. Miss Megan will be the featured musician at our online High Holy Days Children’s Services.

ANNUAL HIGH HOLY DAYS PERSONAL CARE ITEM DRIVE (SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER) For the past 20 years, Temple Israel has been collecting and donating personal care items to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry throughout the High Holy Days season. It’s a TI tradition to do this mitzvah together as a community, and if there was ever a time to share in this act of kindness, it is now. Because of the devastating effects COVID-19 has had on our community, the Food Pantry’s need has grown exponentially. So, instead of waiting until the High Holy Days to call for donations, we’re starting now. Help us to provide thousands of local St. Louis individuals and families with the personal care items they need to get through this time of uncertainty.

DONATIONS: Donations can be dropped off at your convenience in Temple Israel’s May Chapel entrance vestibule. We’ll have large blue bins labeled “Food Pantry” where you can place your items. Needed items include: Toilet paper, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, dental floss, disposable razors, shaving cream, hand sanitizer, dishwashing liquid, and paper towels. Or, if you’d prefer Temple Israel buy personal care items on your behalf to donate to the Food Pantry, consider a contribution toward the purchase of gift cards through our Scrip program. Your purchase will not only benefit the Food Pantry, but Temple Israel will also receive a % of your contribution back from the gift card vendor. All gift card donations are fully tax deductible. Visit www.ti-stl.org/Drive to contribute.

Thank you for joining us in repairing the world, one tube of toothpaste at a time!

DONATIONS FOR HIGH HOLY DAYS SERVICES BIMAH FOOD BASKETS In place of Bimah flowers for this year’s holiday services, Temple Israel is offering a special opportunity to contribute toward food items for those in need though COVID-19. You can make a contribution of $72 which TI will disperse to affiliated organizations that need support. These dollars will help impact our friends at Monroe Elementary School in St. Louis City, the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, and others that need food security during the pandemic. All donors will be recognized for their generous donations in our eNews and Dateline bulletin, and baskets will be placed on the Bimah during High Holy Days services for all to see. To contribute, please contact Martina Stern, Special Events Manager, at 314-432-8050.

We have improperly advised, and we have covered up the truth, and we have laughed in scorn. We have misused responsibility And have neglected others And have stubbornly rebelled. COVID WILL NOT STOP US FROM HELPING THOSE IN NEED

THANKSGIVING DINNER FOR THOSE IN NEED: Because of the limitations of gathering size due to COVID-19, we will not be hosting our traditional Thanksgiving Dinner this year. Instead, we’ll be cooking and putting together individually packaged dinners to bring to local organizations for those in need of warm, delicious holiday meals. Information coming soon!

INSTEAD OF BAKING PIES, THERE’S A DIFFERENT PURPOSE THIS YEAR: Each year, we bake hundreds of pumpkin pies for our Thanksgiving Dinner and to donate to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. This year, the need is so much greater than pies. In lieu of this program, we’re asking the congregation to support the Mitzvah Market this year which benefits hundreds of Monroe Elementary School students. (See below for details.)

THIS YEAR’S MITZVAH MARKET WILL BENEFIT MONROE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Each year, the Mitzvah Market gathers hundreds of clothing item donations to create a shopping experience for those in need who attend our annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Unfortunately, hosting the market is just not an option during COVID. Instead, this year’s Mitzvah Market will benefit the students who attend Monroe Elementary School located in South St. Louis. Monroe has 250+ students ranging from ages 3-12; all of whom are living in poverty, and nearly half of whom experience home insecurity. To ensure these students have what they need once school resumes and to make the winter holidays brighter for each child, the Mitzvah Market is raising money to purchase the following items: sanitizing supplies for Monroe’s staff to use to disinfect the school building on an ongoing basis, snacks for students to enjoy during breaks to remain attentive and engaged, and $15 Walmart gift cards for parents to use to purchase holiday gifts for their children. Our goal is to raise $5,000. Please consider supporting this amazing mitzvah to help hundreds of young children. More info and opportunity to help at: www.ti-stl.org/Market Thank you to our Mitzvah Market Co-Chairs, Jodi Schneiderman and Stacie Weinstein, and to our Monroe Elementary Co-Chairs, Susan K. Goldberg and Liz Buchman, for organizing this amazing mitzvah!
