It has taken me ﬁfteen years in the rabbinate to gather up the courage to confront a problem that leaves many Jews feeling alienated and alone during prayer services. The prayers in Hebrew are hard for most people to follow. Some of you can read Hebrew, but don’t understand what you are reading. Some of you cannot read Hebrew at all. Those who read the English translation often complain to me that the ﬂowery language fails to touch them.

This prayer booklet is my attempt to help you enter into the rich and deeply soulful world of Jewish prayer. During our service we will be singing and praying in Hebrew, but every Hebrew word uttered is transliterated for you, so you can easily sing along. I have also written new English prayers to accompany every Hebrew prayer. These prayers are not translations, they are interpretations, they are the words that ﬂowed from me as I meditated on the Hebrew. When you pray, instead of keeping still and reading silently with your eyes, involve your whole being. Pray with your lips, whisper every word to God, sing, sway, dance, offer up your heart and soul.

I pray that you will ﬁnd your own voice in this service, that you will feel a part of it, that you will see how your presence illuminates us all, that you will uncover your own unique way of talking to God. Say to God whatever you need to say … and listen closely for a reply.

May you receive an answer that will bring you joy and peace. May God be with you. May health and strength sustain you. May nothing harm you. May wisdom and kindness enrich you. May you be a blessing to this world and may blessings surround you now and always. Amen.

The world of the spirit mirrors the world of matter, just as heaven mirrors earth. The words we speak are a bridge between these two dimensions. They arise from the ﬂesh and are carried by the life breath into the realm of the spirit. Vows we make to God do not evaporate like mist even though we have the power to ignore them. Our oaths leave a permanent imprint on an eternal consciousness. They linger as a testament to all our unfulﬁlled promise. At this moment on this night we pray for the strength, God, to refrain from making vows to You. Instead, let us be judged on heaven and on earth by our actions. May our prayers lead us beyond the realm of intentions to the world of deeds. Let all vows, promises, and oaths we make to You, God, from this Yom Kippur until the next be erased, released and forgiven. We regret having spoken them. Let our vows to You not be vows, our promises to You not be promises, our oaths to You not be oaths.

בָרוְ אַתָה יְיָ אֱלקינו מֶלְֶ הָעולָם אֲשֶר בִדבָרו ,With the darkness comes Your light מַעֲריב עֲרבִים. בְחָכְמָה פותֵחַ שְעָרים, ,Earth and sky blend into one ובִתְבונָה מְשַנֶה עִתִים ומַחֲלִיף אֶת הַזְמַנִים, ,The heavens seem closer now ומְסַדֵר אֶת הַכוכָבִים בְמִשְמְרותֵיהֶם בָרקיעַ ,The day’s burdens farther somehow כִרצונו. בורא יום וָלָיְלָה, גולֵל אור מִפְנֵי חשְֶ .Your presence is almost palpable וְחשְֶ מִפְנֵי אור. ,You own the darkness You unlock doors I never thought would open. We long to know You, God, to know Your ways, to know what You what from us, why You have put us here. We long to know why this world is ﬁlled with so much pain, why the innocent suffer. Moses longed to know You. When he asked You to reveal Yourself these are the words You spoke:

Adonai, Adonai, a God of compassion, grace, patience, abundant love and truthwho shows undying love to generation after generation. A God who forgives wrongdoing, transgression, and sin. A God who puriﬁes us.

Forgive us, God, help us to return to You. Listen to our prayer, hear us when we call.
