JASO 27/2 (1996): 113-135 THE SECULAR MUSIC OF THE YEMENITE JEWS AS AN EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL DEMARCATION BETWEEN THE SEXES MARILYN HERMAN JEWISH men and women in Yemen are portrayed in the sociological and anthropo logical literature as having lived in separate conceptual and spatial worlds. As a result, two very separate bodies of song existed, one pertaining to men and the other to women. In this paper, I show how the culturally defined demarcation be tween the sexes is reflected and epitomized in the music of the Jews who lived in Yemen. i The key to this separation lies in the fact that women were banned from the synagogue altogether. This exclusion is not prescribed by Jewish law, and there is no precedent for it in the Bible or other Jewish literature or communities. The reason given for women being banned from the synagogue in Yemen was the fear that they might be menstruating. The condition of menstruation is, in Jewish law, This paper is based on my MA thesis (Herman 1985), which was written under the supervision and with the moral and academic support of Dr P. T. W. Baxter of Manchester University. My brother Geoffrey Herman willingly and painstakingly translated Hebrew articles into English for my benefit while I was writing this thesis. I. LOUISE: Thank you, Jonathan. It's so great to be with you today. I'm a cantor and I've served in the Boston area since the 1980s. I'm blessed to be Cantor Emerita of Temple Beth David in Westwood, Massachusetts, and I also – at Hebrew college in Newton, Massachusetts -- I teach rabbinical and cantorial and education students. It's a pluralistic seminary here. In recent years. I've been serving a World Union for Progressive Judaism congregation in Italy. First, I was in Florence and then most recently in Rome. This is for the High Holidays, and currently via Zoom for monthly Shabbatot. I've been involved with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, IJS, almost since its beginning, and was thrilled to finally be in the first Clergy Cohort. I've led some of the regular Daily Meditations, and I've also been listening to these personal prayer practice podcasts since they started. -

How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home?
“Day of Atonement” In Hebrew. Healthy adults are commanded to refrain from eating and drinking from sunset to sunset to remind us of the frailty of the human body and our own mortality, and to encourage complete focus on the holiday. It is customary to wear white on the holiday and some choose to wear sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes out of deference to the ancient practice of avoiding leather shoes, which were a symbol of luxury. How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home? Before sundown, families and friends gather together and eat the last meal before the start of Yom Kip- pur and the period of fasting. It is only after the last bite is eaten, and the holiday candles are lit, that Yom Kippur and the fast officially begin. If you choose to fast, it is important to remember that children under the age of 13 are not required to fast nor are adults whose health precludes them from fasting. Yom Kippur is a somber Jewish holiday of reflection and contemplation. We think of those who came before us and those who have influenced our lives and we take the time to remember family and/or friends who have died. You can light a special Yahrzeit candle (available in Judaica shops and online), if you choose. Just like on Shabbat, two candles can be lit at the evening meal. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your com- mandments and commands us to light the [Sabbath and] holiday lights. -

UNIT 8 JEWS, JAZZ, AND JEWISH JAZZ PART 1: JEWS AND JAZZ (Lorry Black and Jeff Janeczko) A PROGRAM OF THE LOWELL MILKEN FUND FOR AMERICAN JEWISH MUSIC AT THE UCLA HERB ALPERT SCHOOL OF MUSIC UNIT 8: JEWS, JAZZ, AND JEWISH JAZZ, PART 1 1 Since the emergence of jazz in the late 19th century, Jews have helped shape the art form as musicians, bandleaders, songwriters, promoters, record label managers and more. Working alongside African Americans but often with fewer barriers to success, Jews helped jazz gain recognition as a uniquely American art form, symbolic of the melting pot’s potential and a pluralistic society. At the same time that Jews helped establish jazz as America’s art form, they also used it to shape the contours of American Jewish identity. Elements of jazz infiltrated some of America’s earliest secular Jewish music, formed the basis of numerous sacred works, and continue to influence the soundtrack of American Jewish life. As such, jazz has been an important site in which Jews have helped define what it means to be American, as well as Jewish. Enduring Understandings • Jazz has been an important platform through which Jews have helped shape the pluralistic nature of American society, as well as one that has shaped understandings of American Jewish identity. • Jews have played many different roles in the development of jazz, from composers to club owners. • Though Jews have been involved in jazz through virtually all phases of its development, they have only used it to express Jewishness in a relatively small number of circumstances. -

A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. A Guide to the Shabbat Morning Service at Heska Amuna Synagogue Common Terms and Phrases Adonai (lit. sir or master) – word that is substituted for the holiest of God’s personal names, YHVH, in Hebrew prayer. The prayer book in use at Heska Amuna translates this word as Lord. aliyah (pl. aliyot) – a Torah reading. Also, the honor of reciting the blessings for a Torah reading. The aliyot on Shabbat are: (1) Kohen (3) Shelishi (5) Hamishi (7) Shevi’i (2) Levi (4) Revi’i (6) Shishi (8) Maftir amidah – standing prayer, the central prayer of every service. Aron Kodesh (lit. holy ark) – the cabinet housing the Torah scrolls when not in use. b’racha (pl. b’rachot) – blessing. barukh hu u-varukh sh’mo (lit. praised is He and praised is His name) – the congregational response whenever the prayer leader begins a blessing with barukh attah Adonai (praised are You, Lord). At the end of the blessing, the congregation responds with amen. bimah – the raised platform at the front of the sanctuary where the Ark is located. birchot hashachar – the morning blessings, recited before the start of shacharit. chazarat hashatz (lit. repetition of the shatz) – the loud recitation of the amidah following the silent reading. chumash – the book containing the Torah and Haftarah readings. The chumash used at Heska Amuna is Etz Hayim (lit. tree of life). d’var Torah (lit. word of Torah) – a talk on topics relating to a section of the Torah. 1 gabbai (pl. gabbaim) – Two gabbaim stand at the reader’s table during the Torah reading. -

Jewish American Women’s Writing: Dislodging Preconceptions by Challenging Expectations Judith Lewin Josh Lambert describes “a little experiment” that he does with his Jewish literature classes: “I ask them to take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil…. I say, ‘Draw a Jew.’…. One of my favorite questions to ask first is this: ‘How many of you drew a woman?’ (Usually, it’s at most one or two…)” (paras.1-3). Since Lambert notes that “usually, it’s at most one or two,” the students’ inability to imagine a woman inhabiting the category “Jew” is worth dwelling upon.1 Why is it Jewish American women are invisible, inaudible, and insufficiently read? This essay proposes a curriculum that engages students to think broadly and fluidly about Jewish American women authors and the issues and themes in their fiction. Previous pedagogical essays on Jewish American women’s writing include two in sociology/women’s studies on identities (see Friedman and Rosenberg; Sigalow), Sheila Jelen’s in Shofar on Hebrew and Yiddish texts, and a special issue in MELUS 37:2 (Summer 2012) that include women’s literature but without gender as a focus. The aim of this essay, by contrast, is to introduce teachers of American literature to an array of texts written by American Jewish women that will engage critical reading, thinking and writing by contemporary college undergraduates. Two questions must be dealt with right away. First, how does one justify treating Jewish American women’s literature in isolation? Second, how does one challenge the expectations of what such a course entails? As Lambert demonstrated from his informal survey, Jewish women writers are doubly invisible, to Jewish literature as women and to 1 women’s literature as Jews. -

CONGREGATION NEVEH SHALOM Clergy and Senior Staff Process Review Committee May 4, 2010 Report to the Board of Directors Proposed Assessment Review and Contract Renewal Processes EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The following report was prepared by the Clergy and Senior Staff Process Review Committee (PRC) appointed by the President of Congregation Neveh Shalom. This action was taken in response to a resolution passed by members at the annual congregational meeting, June 28, 2009 to appoint a seven-member committee “to improve the process of evaluation, review and contract renewal of clergy and senior staff”. The PRC undertook this work between August 2009 and May 2010 to review current practices at Congregation Neveh Shalom, practices of other congregations, and Halakhic principles from the United Synagogue and other Jewish sources. PRC Committee members also interviewed Rabbis Daniel Isaak and Bradley Greenstein, Executive Director Fred Rothstein, Cantor Linda Shivers, and a professional in the human relations field. The PRC also solicited input from the congregation and considered written and oral comments received from current and former congregants. A summary follows. Findings Based upon our research and lengthy committee discussions, the PRC finds that the current annual review and contract renewal processes at Congregation Neveh Shalom are inconsistent; performed without notice to, or input from the Congregation; have insufficient written documentation of the final results, including possible corrective course(s) of action; and do not provide for a systematic way to inform reviewees that their employment may be in jeopardy. Recommendations The revised Clergy and Senior Staff Review and Contract Renewal Process should correct all these deficiencies within an overriding framework that: 1 -Is collaborative, with the goal of strengthening relationships among all parties. -

In Israelite journey through the book of Exodus is the Sam Fox on his story of the formation of a nation. In the first book of the Torah, Bar Mitzvah (Heritage we read stories of our ancestral families; narratives grounded in the Sanctuary) machinations of individuals, their relationships and their familial connections. With the book of Exodus, the emphasis shifts. No CANDLE LIGHTING Friday 7:14pm longer are we concerned with just one small group of people, instead Saturday 7:49pm we are focused on hundreds of thousands as they leave slavery and TORAH (page 552) form themselves into a nation, a people who share a history and a Exodus 35:1 - 38:20 new destiny. Through their time in the desert they make a covenant Exodus 30:11 - 30:16 with God, they connect with one another and they face challenges HAFTARAH (page 1276) and tribulations together as one. And one of the symbols of the new II Kings 12:1 - 12:17 togetherness, the shared future, is the construction of the tabernacle. SHABBAT SERVICES Through its building, the people brought their individual selves Erev Shabbat together, with hearts filled with love they gave and participated in its construction and through that process, created the space for God • 6:15pm Shabbat Live (New Sanctuary) within the community. -
