The Occupy Wall Street Movement's Struggle Over Privately Owned
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 3162–3181 1932–8036/20170005 A Noneventful Social Movement: The Occupy Wall Street Movement’s Struggle Over Privately Owned Public Space HAO CAO The University of Texas at Austin, USA Why did the Occupy Wall Street movement settle in Zuccotti Park, a privately owned public space? Why did the movement get evicted after a two-month occupation? To answer these questions, this study offers a new tentative framework, spatial opportunity structure, to understand spatial politics in social movements as the interaction of spatial structure and agency. Drawing on opportunity structure models, Sewell’s dual concept of spatial structure and agency, and his concept of event, I analyze how the Occupy activists took over and repurposed Zuccotti Park from a site of consumption and leisure to a space of political claim making. Yet, with unsympathetic public opinion, intensifying policing and surveillance, and unfavorable court rulings privileging property rights over speech rights, the temporary success did not stabilize into a durable transformation of spatial structure. My study not only explains the Occupy movement’s spatial politics but also offers a novel framework to understand the struggle over privatization of public space for future social movements and public speech and assembly in general. Keywords: Occupy Wall Street movement, privately owned public space (POPS), spatial opportunity structure, spatial agency, spatial structure, event Collective actions presuppose the copresence of “large numbers of people into limited spaces” (Sewell, 2001, p. 58). To hold many people, such spaces should, in principle, be public sites that permit free access to everyone. The Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, targeting the engulfing inequality in the age of financialization and neoliberalization, used occupation of symbolic sites to convey its message. -

How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home?
“Day of Atonement” In Hebrew. Healthy adults are commanded to refrain from eating and drinking from sunset to sunset to remind us of the frailty of the human body and our own mortality, and to encourage complete focus on the holiday. It is customary to wear white on the holiday and some choose to wear sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes out of deference to the ancient practice of avoiding leather shoes, which were a symbol of luxury. How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home? Before sundown, families and friends gather together and eat the last meal before the start of Yom Kip- pur and the period of fasting. It is only after the last bite is eaten, and the holiday candles are lit, that Yom Kippur and the fast officially begin. If you choose to fast, it is important to remember that children under the age of 13 are not required to fast nor are adults whose health precludes them from fasting. Yom Kippur is a somber Jewish holiday of reflection and contemplation. We think of those who came before us and those who have influenced our lives and we take the time to remember family and/or friends who have died. You can light a special Yahrzeit candle (available in Judaica shops and online), if you choose. Just like on Shabbat, two candles can be lit at the evening meal. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your com- mandments and commands us to light the [Sabbath and] holiday lights. -

The Medium is the Masses: Embodied Amplifcation, Urban Occupation Katherine Kelp-Stebbins and Allison M. Schifani In September 2011, groups of community organizers, activists, and others gathered to protest economic inequality in New York City’s Zuccotti Park under the banner of "Occupy Wall Street." The crowd that formed in the heart of the city’s financial district launched what became a diverse and global movement now known simply as "Occupy." In this initiatory protest, a city ordinance prevented speakers from using electronic amplification systems to address the large audience. Occupiers tactically responded to the absence of microphones or megaphones and speaker systems with an embodied technology known as the people’s mic. In its practice, participants hoping to address the crowds in attendance and at general assemblies (meetings open to all for planning future actions and administering to the daily needs of the occupiers) shouted “mic check,” and the crowd of bodies around them loudly echoed the speaker in response. Thus, they could deliver messages to those out of earshot in the occupied spaces. This phenomenon spread well beyond the boundaries of Zuccotti Park to Occupy protests in Oakland, Los Angeles, Detroit, Portland, and elsewhere. The people’s mic became so emblematic and—we will argue—intrinsic to the objectives of occupation that participants used it instead of electronic Media Fields Journal no. 9 (2015) 2 Medium is the Masses amplification in many places where such communication systems were legal and available. Our project is to articulate the specific context and stakes involved in Occupy’s tactical use of embodied technology. -

9/11/2014 escape.htm Joe Matheny, a founding father Culture Jammer, was kind enough to give what he called his "last interview" online to Escape. Now happily working towards his pension in an anonymous programmer's job, Joe famously spammed the White House with a bunch of email frogs and caused uproar in American media society with his many japes. But why did it get all serious? And why are none of the original CJers talking to each other? What follows is the unedited version of the interview published in December 1997's Escape. All the hotlinks are Joe's. So who started Culture Jamming as a phenomenon, and why? Boy, that's a loaded question! No, really. It depends on who you ask. Personally I trace the roots of media pranking, or "culture jamming" as it's known these days, to people like Orson Welles and his famous "War of the Worlds" broadcast in America, or even his lesser known film "F is for Fake". More recently, a scientist by the name of Harold Garfinkle conducted something called breaching experiments, in which he studied the flexbility of peoples belief systems by fabricating stories and then guaging peoples reaction to them.He called this field of study Ethnomethodology and popularized it in his book Studies in Ethnomethodology. Garfinkle would incrementally make the his stories wilder and more speculative until the subjects would finally reach a point of disbelief. (in other words Garfinkle perpetrated lies, and then "pushed the envelope" with his subjects) In the 60s CJ was taken to a whole new level by two very differnet groups. -

Kol Nidre 5780: A Joyous Yom Kippur Rabbi Ita Paskind Congregation Beth El, Norwalk If I told you that Yom Kippur is one of the most joyous days on the Jewish calendar, would you believe me? OK. I suppose it’s gotten a reputation for being solemn, but I promise I didn’t make that up. One of the most revered Sages in Jewish history, Rabban Gamliel, who lived in the land of Israel in the first century, asserted1 that Yom Kippur was as joyous as an actual joyous day, Tu b’Av, also known as Jewish Sadie Hawkins Day. Tu b’Av, or the 15th day of the month of Av, late in the summer, was a day for matchmaking, and today continues to celebrate love. But Yom Kippur?! Rabban Gamliel’s assertion builds on the premise that, after a day of soul-searching, fasting, and prayer, we are 100% guaranteed forgiveness for our sins. And that is certainly cause for celebration. But there’s a great distance between where we sit right now, at the start of this sacred convocation, and where we plan to arrive tomorrow night--and I don’t just mean the lox and bagels! We are hopeful--we have chosen to abstain from all of our daily pleasures; many of us are wearing white, the traditional color of purity--and yet we bear the burden of a year’s worth of mistakes, missteps, shameful behavior, perhaps even true sins. When we removed the Sifrei Torah from the ark a short while ago, we asked permission to pray im ha’avaryanim, in the presence of sinners.
