301 Tehillat Hashem and Other Verses Before Birkat Ha-Mazon By: ZVI RON In this article we investigate the origin and development of saying vari- ous Psalms and selected verses from Psalms before Birkat Ha-Mazon. In particular, we will attempt to explain the practice of some Ashkenazic Jews to add Psalms 145:21, 115:18, 118:1 and 106:2 after Ps. 126 (Shir Ha-Ma‘alot) and before Birkat Ha-Mazon. Psalms 137 and 126 Before Birkat Ha-Mazon The earliest source for reciting Ps. 137 (Al Naharot Bavel) before Birkat Ha-Mazon is found in the list of practices of the Tzfat kabbalist R. Moshe Cordovero (1522–1570). There are different versions of this list, but all versions include the practice of saying Al Naharot Bavel.1 Some versions specifically note that this is to recall the destruction of the Temple,2 some versions state that the Psalm is supposed to be said at the meal, though not specifically right before Birkat Ha-Mazon,3 and some versions state that the Psalm is only said on weekdays, though no alternative Psalm is offered for Shabbat and holidays.4 Although the ex- act provenance of this list is not clear, the parts of it referring to the recitation of Ps. 137 were already popularized by 1577.5 The mystical work Seder Ha-Yom by the 16th century Tzfat kabbalist R. Moshe ben Machir was first published in 1599. We are celebrating the 130th anniversary of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Essex County. We have pulled from a few of our favorite haggadahs and made some modifications to the traditional order. 1 The Seder Plate What's on the Table by Geoff Chesman (Adapted) From Haggadot.com We place a Seder Plate at our table as a reminder to discuss certain aspects of the Passover story. Each item has its own significance. Maror – The bitter herb, which symbolizes the harshness of lives of the Jews in Egypt. Charoset – A delicious mix of sweet wine, apples, cinnamon and nuts that resembles the mortar used as bricks of the many buildings the Jewish slaves built in Egypt Karpas – A green vegetable, usually parsley, as a reminder of the green sprouting up all around us during spring and dipped into the saltwater, symbolizing he bitter tears of enslavement. Chazeret – A bitter vegetable (often romaine lettuce), used in addition to the Maror as a bitter herb. The authorities are divided on the requirement of chazeret, so not all communities use it. Since the commandment uses the plural (“bitter herbs”) most Seder plates have a place for chazeret. (They shall eat the flesh that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs. – Exodus 12:8) Zeroah – Traditionally a roasted lamb or shank bone – vegetarians often use a beet – symbolizing the Paschal lamb sacrifice made at the ancient Temple in Jerusalem on Passover. Beitzah – The egg, which symbolizes a different holiday offering brought to the Temple. Since eggs are the first item offered to a mourner after a funeral, some say it also evokes a sense of mourning for the destruction of the temple. Orange – A recent addition to the Seder plate, which represents full inclusion in Judaism: women, people with disabilities, intermarried couples, and the LGBTQ Community. -

Rosh Ha-Shanah 5780 Day Two 1 Eilu Ve-Eilu Divrei Elohim Hạ yyim : Rabbinic Judaism and Pluralism in the State of Israel and the United States of America Tuesday, October 1, 2019 / 2nd of Tishrei, 5780 Rabbi Louis Polisson Congregation Or Atid of Wayland, MA Back in May, Or Atid had the pleasure of hearing Rabbi Mikie Goldstein speak about Conservative Judaism, Religious Pluralism, and LGBTQ+ Rights in the State of Israel today. Rabbi Goldstein is the first openly gay Masorti (Conservative) pulpit rabbi in the State of Israel. On June 24th, just over a month after he spoke at Or Atid, I got an email from him with the subject line: “Fire at Adat Shalom-Emanuel - update.” This email update shared that on a Saturday night, firefighters had been called by a neighbor who saw flames coming from the upper floor of the synagogue, where their sanctuary is situated. Shortly after, members of their congregation were alerted and a few of them arrived, just as the fire had been put out. A fire investigator ruled out foul play, and it seemed that the fire had been caused by electrical issues. Rabbi Goldstein wrote: “Our main challenge right now is to find a suitable site for holding services this Shabbat. As usual, we have a Bat Mitzvah this Rosh Ha-Shanah 5780 Day Two 2 Shabbat - and the next. Finding a place is not so easy. Most suitable halls are connected somehow to the municipality. Although people wish to help, they feel that their hands are tied because we are a Masorti kehillah [that is, a Conservative congregation]. -
Interpreting Diagrams from the Sefer Yetsirah and Its Commentaries 1
NOTES 1 Word and Image in Medieval Kabbalah: Interpreting Diagrams from the Sefer Yetsirah and Its Commentaries 1. The most notorious example of these practices is the popularizing work of Aryeh Kaplan. His critical editions of the SY and the Sefer ha Bahir are some of the most widely read in the field because they provide the texts in Hebrew and English with comprehensive and useful appendices. However, these works are deeply problematic because they dehistoricize the tradi- tion by adding later diagrams to earlier works. For example, in his edition of the SY he appends eighteenth-century diagrams to later versions of this tenth-century text. Popularizers of kabbalah such as Michael Berg of the Kabbalah Centre treat the Zohar as a second-century rabbinic tract without acknowledging textual evidence to the contrary. See his introduction to the Centre’s translation of the Zohar: P. S. Berg. The Essential Zohar. New York: Random House, 2002. 2. For a variety of reasons, kabbalistic works were transmitted in manuscript form long after other works, such as the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, and their commentaries were widely available in print. This is true in large part because kabbalistic treatises were “private” works, transmitted from teacher to student. Kabbalistic manuscripts were also traditionally transmitted in manuscript form because of their provenance. The Maghreb and other parts of North Africa were important centers of later mystical activity, and print technology came quite late to these regions, with manuscript culture persisting well into the nineteenth, and even into the mid- twentieth century in some regions.
