Rather, each yom tov is distinctively, intrinsically holy, and it is the unique kedushas ha-yom of each yom tov which generates the mitzvos which Hakadosh Baruch Hu commands us to keep that day. Each yom tov, if properly appreciated and taken advantage of, can be a time of unique spiritual growth. The exceptional nature ofyomim tovim is perhaps most obvious and pro- nounced during the Yomim Noraim and in their aftermath, onSukkos . This volume collects nineteen years (1999-2017) of divrei Torah that provide in- sight and guidance regarding the obligations and opportunities that we each have every Elul and Tishrei. We hope that making them available in a sefer will, b’ezras Hashem, help each of us take maximal advantage of the unique oppor- tunities intrinsic to the Yomim Noraim and Sukkos. The divrei Torah contained herein were originally written by our rebbeim for TorahWeb.org. The realities of the time pressures with which these Torah lead- ers function on a daily basis result in the divrei Torah on the web site often not being properly edited, missing mareh mekomos, etc. These shortcomings were addressed for the version of the divrei Torah included in this volume. The TorahWeb Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1999 at the initiative of members of our community. Its goal is to disseminate divrei Torah and hashkafa, with special attention to contem- porary religious and social issues. TorahWeb’s board consists of Rav Hershel Schachter, Rav Michael Rosensweig, Rav Mayer Twersky, and Rav Mordechai Willig. TorahWeb’s primary projects have been publishing weekly divrei Torah written by our rebbeim on www.TorahWeb.org as well as on our email list and arranging for leilei iyun a number of times a year in various communities, the audio and video of which is available on TorahWeb.org as well.     SHABBAT, MARCH 7, 2020 - ADAR 11, 5780 PARSHAT TETZAVEH (Pgs. 464 & 1066) SHABBAT ZACHOR TORAH INSIGHTS FROM RABBI ELI BABICH You shall make holy garments for your brother Aaron, for honor and glory (Tetzaveh 28:2). Parshat Tetzaveh describes the eight priestly garments that the high priest wore while serving in the Mishkan/Tabernacle. As the garments were designed in an elegant and royal manner, they granted the high priest both “honor and glory.” Numerous commentaries questioned why such extravagant garments were necessary in a location dedicated to spiritual pursuits. The S’forno suggested that the priestly garments served a double function: (1) the high priest’s adornment of garments of splendor during the Temple service brought honor to the Almighty; and (2) the appearance of the other kohanim in vestments of glory facilitated their role as educators. The priestly garments inspired awe amongst the Israelites, enhancing the respect due to the kohanim. The Sefer HaChinuch, published anonymously in 13th century Spain, noted that the priestly gar- ments were meant to focus the kohanim on their service in the Temple. The adornment of the “royal uniform” served as a constant reminder for the kohanim to focus on their priestly responsibilities and to not be distracted from their holy work. The Malbim of- fered a novel interpretation and suggested that the elegant outer garments served as a sign for the kohanim that just as their out appearance was in beautified coverings, their inner character must be exemplary as well. Outer piety, explained the Malbim, must be matched with inner purity. Often, people outwardly display a heightened religiosity, but in private, they manifest a corrupt and crooked nature.

    PRESENTER PROFILES RABBI KENNETH BRANDER Rabbi Kenneth Brander is Vice President for University and Community Life at Yeshiva University. He served as the inaugural David Mitzner Dean of Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future. Prior to his work at Yeshiva University, Rabbi Brander served for 14 years as the Senior Rabbi of the Boca Raton Synagogue. He oversaw its explosive growth from 60 families to over 600 families. While Senior Rabbi of the Boca Raton Synagogue (BRS), he became the founding dean of The Weinbaum Yeshiva High School, founding dean of the Boca Raton Judaic Fellows Program – Community Kollel and founder and posek of the Boca Raton Community Mikvah. He helped to develop the Hahn Judaic Campus on which all these institutions reside and as co-chair of Kashrut organization of the Orthodox Rabbinical Board of Broward & Palm Beach Counties (ORB). Rabbi Brander also served for five years as a Member of the Executive Board of the South Palm Beach County Jewish Federation, as a Board member of Jewish Family Services of South Palm Beach County, and actively worked with other lay leaders in the development of the Hillel Day School. Rabbi Brander is a 1984 alumnus of Yeshiva College and received his ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in 1986. During that time he served as a student assistant to the esteemed Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. He also received an additional ordination from Rav Menachem Burstein the founder and dean of Machon Puah and from the Chief Rabbi, Mordechai Eliyahu, in the field of Jewish Law and Bioethics with a focus on reproductive technology, He is currently a PhD candidate (ABD) in general philosophy at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

Broyde Introduction Thank you to Rabbi Yaacov Sasson for his comments on footnote 59 of the article “The Use of Electricity on Shabbat and Yom Tov” found in the Journal of Halacha and Contemporary Society, 21:4-47 (Spring 1991) co-written by Rabbi Jachter and myself. It is always nice to have people commenting on articles written more than 25 years ago.[1] Before delving into the halacha, it is worth clarifying some preliminary facts – in particular, whether refrigerators even had automatic lights during the first half of the 1930s. Some commenters have suggested that such lights were not yet present, or that they were limited to rare and expensive refrigerators. This is not correct. I reproduce below a wide variety of newspaper ads from the early 1930s that show that a range of refrigerator models by many manufacturers at various price points featured automatic interior lights (see attachments here). These include a Frigidaire priced at $157.50, a GE priced at $99.50, a Majestic model with no price, a Frigidaire priced at $119.50, a Leonard priced at $114.75 and many more.[2] And while some of the publications appear targeted to the upper class, many others are clearly meant for wider audiences – particularly those available on installment plans (“$5 down, 15¢ a day”; “Nothing down! 20¢ a day!”; “$7 Initial Payment – enables you to enjoy any of these refrigerators immediately.

    1 Sukkos, 5781 Dear Talmidim, The recent uptick in Covid-19 prompts this letter. The Torah requires that we avoid dangerous activity. The protection afforded to Mitzvah performance does not apply when danger is prevalent (Pesachim 8b). In all gatherings, masks covering everyone's mouth and nose must be worn. In addition, appropriate social distance between attendees (except for members of the same household) must be maintained. Hands must be washed with soap and water or with proper hand sanitizer. On Shabbos and Yom Tov liquid soap or sanitizer may and must be used. On Simchas Torah, the usual hakafos and dancing are prohibited. At the discretion of every local rav, hakafos may be limited or eliminated. Any dancing must be done while wearing masks and socially distanced. Upon advice from medical experts, we recommend that the sefer Torah not be passed from one person to another. Preferably, one person should circle the bima 7 times. After each hakafa the tzibur should join in an appropriate nigun and "dance" in place. The practice of everyone getting an aliya is a minhag, not a din, and may be adjusted or eliminated at the discretion of the local rav (see links here and here for similar horaos}. Similarly, at weddings the usual dancing is prohibited. Any dancing must be done while wearing masks and socially distanced. Chasanim and their families are urged to limit the size of weddings and to insist upon and enforce masking and appropriate distancing by all their guests. Adherence to all the above is required by the halacha which demands great caution to protect life and good health.
