SHABBAT, MARCH 7, 2020 - ADAR 11, 5780 PARSHAT TETZAVEH (Pgs SHABBAT, MARCH 7, 2020 - ADAR 11, 5780 PARSHAT TETZAVEH (Pgs. 464 & 1066) SHABBAT ZACHOR TORAH INSIGHTS FROM RABBI ELI BABICH You shall make holy garments for your brother Aaron, for honor and glory (Tetzaveh 28:2). Parshat Tetzaveh describes the eight priestly garments that the high priest wore while serving in the Mishkan/Tabernacle. As the garments were designed in an elegant and royal manner, they granted the high priest both “honor and glory.” Numerous commentaries questioned why such extravagant garments were necessary in a location dedicated to spiritual pursuits. The S’forno suggested that the priestly garments served a double function: (1) the high priest’s adornment of garments of splendor during the Temple service brought honor to the Almighty; and (2) the appearance of the other kohanim in vestments of glory facilitated their role as educators. The priestly garments inspired awe amongst the Israelites, enhancing the respect due to the kohanim. The Sefer HaChinuch, published anonymously in 13th century Spain, noted that the priestly gar- ments were meant to focus the kohanim on their service in the Temple. The adornment of the “royal uniform” served as a constant reminder for the kohanim to focus on their priestly responsibilities and to not be distracted from their holy work. The Malbim of- fered a novel interpretation and suggested that the elegant outer garments served as a sign for the kohanim that just as their out appearance was in beautified coverings, their inner character must be exemplary as well. Outer piety, explained the Malbim, must be matched with inner purity. Often, people outwardly display a heightened religiosity, but in private, they manifest a corrupt and crooked nature. The elegant garments worn by the kohanim were meant to serve as a reminder that their “inner beauty” must correlate with their “outer beauty.” Similarly, The Talmud (Yoma 72) noted that the Ark consisted of a gold outer covering, a wooden middle layer, and an inner gold layer, even though the inside of the Ark was not visible to the public. This arrangement of layers conveyed the message that one’s inner personal self must match one’s outer self which associates and interacts with others. Personal integrity is a value of the Torah, for which we all must strive.     1 Sukkos, 5781 Dear Talmidim, The recent uptick in Covid-19 prompts this letter. The Torah requires that we avoid dangerous activity. The protection afforded to Mitzvah performance does not apply when danger is prevalent (Pesachim 8b). In all gatherings, masks covering everyone's mouth and nose must be worn. In addition, appropriate social distance between attendees (except for members of the same household) must be maintained. Hands must be washed with soap and water or with proper hand sanitizer. On Shabbos and Yom Tov liquid soap or sanitizer may and must be used. On Simchas Torah, the usual hakafos and dancing are prohibited. At the discretion of every local rav, hakafos may be limited or eliminated. Any dancing must be done while wearing masks and socially distanced. Upon advice from medical experts, we recommend that the sefer Torah not be passed from one person to another. Preferably, one person should circle the bima 7 times. After each hakafa the tzibur should join in an appropriate nigun and "dance" in place. The practice of everyone getting an aliya is a minhag, not a din, and may be adjusted or eliminated at the discretion of the local rav (see links here and here for similar horaos}. Similarly, at weddings the usual dancing is prohibited. Any dancing must be done while wearing masks and socially distanced. Chasanim and their families are urged to limit the size of weddings and to insist upon and enforce masking and appropriate distancing by all their guests. Adherence to all the above is required by the halacha which demands great caution to protect life and good health.

The introduction of the codex changed little at first, and for sacred use, has still changed nothing at all. But for Jewish books of study, the codex emerged as the form of choice by the Middle Ages. It has, as historian Robert Darnton has written, “proven to be a marvelous machine—great for packaging information, convenient to thumb through, comfortable to curl up with, superb for storage, and remarkably resistant to damage.” (1) When one looks closer, a very particular form of the book—more precisely, of the page of the book—has emerged in the past millennium that reflects, and in turn animates, Jewish learning and mentality. The quintessential Jewish book is the mikra’ot gedolot: each page displays a central text, in this case the Bible, with commentaries, always in dialogue with each other, surrounding it.

    “Can I Have a Ride?” Carpooling & Middas Sodom Rabbi Daniel Stein Halacha L’Maaseh Program Coordinator, RIETS The Mitzvah of Chesed The human head and face is comprised of only seven elements: the shape of head, shape of face, eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and hair. Yet it is widely accepted that there are no two people who look exactly alike. The Talmud, in recognition of this axiom, comments: “just as no two faces look exactly alike, no two people possess exactly the same ideas and personality.”11 Nonetheless, the Talmud does assert that there are three personality traits shared by every member of the Jewish people. Every Jew is inherently merciful (rachmanim), humble (bayshanim), and benevolent (gomlei chasadim)12. Obviously individuals can tamper with or contaminate their initial proclivity towards these qualities, but these are the hallmarks of the Jewish nation as a whole. The last item enumerated - benevolence, or the mitzvah of chesed - is without a doubt a Biblical mitzvah13. The Gemara struggles to distinguish between the mitzvah of chesed and another Biblical directive, the mitzvah of tzedakah (charity to the poor)14. The Gemara resolves that the general mitzvah of chesed includes the specific mitzvah of tzedakah and surpasses it in three areas. Tzedakah only applies to the indigent, whereas chesed applies to wealthy as well. Tzedakah only relates to the living, but chesed can exist even with the dead. Lastly, tzedakah refers solely to monetary support, whereas chesed exists even in the form of a non-monetary favor (i.e. to deliver a eulogy, to visit the sick, etc.).

At the same time, the students will learn and teach Devorah was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, attended high Torah in the evenings and become a part of the East Brunswick Jewish school in Memphis, TN, and currently lives in Atlanta, GA. Devorah is a junior at Stern College and likes to spend her community. This innovative program will assist YU students in advancing time volunteering at New York Presbyterian Hospital. In her their career interests in medicine, while simultaneously exposing them to spare time she enjoys playing the piano, singing, cooking, and a wonderful, warm and vibrant Jewish community.
