The Piaseczner Rebbe Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira and the Philosopher
“Mending the World” in Approaches of Hassidism and Reform Judaism: The Piaseczner Rebbe Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira and the philosopher Emil L. Fackenheim on the Holocaust By Anna Kupinska Submitted to Central European University Department of History In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Carsten Wilke Second Reader: Professor Michael Laurence Miller CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2016 Copyright in the text of this thesis rests with the Author. Copies by any process, either in full or part, may be made only in accordance with the instructions given by the Author and lodged in the Central European Library. Details may be obtained from the librarian. This page must form a part of any such copies made. Further copies made in accordance with such instructions may not be made without the written permission of the Author. CEU eTD Collection Abstract Holocaust raised many theological and philosophical problems that questioned and doubted all previous human experience. Many believers asked is it possible to keep faith in God after mass exterminations, many thinkers were concerned with a future of philosophy that seemed to lose its value, facing unspeakable and unthinkable. There was another ontological question – how to fix all the damage, caused by Holocaust (if it is possible at all), how to prevent new catastrophes and to make the world a better place to live. On a junction of these problems two great works appeared – Esh Kodesh (The Holy Fire) by Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira and To Mend the World by Emil Fackenheim. The first was a Hassidic leader, the Rabbi of the Polish town Piaseczno and also the Rabbi in the Warsaw ghetto, who didn’t survive Holocaust but spent rest of his days, helping and comforting his Hasidim likewise other fellow Jews. -

Artists who have produced experimental innovations have been motivated by aesthetic criteria: they have aimed at presenting visual perceptions. Their goals are imprecise… means that these artists rarely feel they have succeeded, and their careers are consequently often dominated by the pursuit of a single objective. -

Young Rabbis and All About Olives
Young Rabbis and All About Olives Young Rabbis and All About Olives Marc B. Shapiro I am currently working on a book focused on the thought of R. Kook, in particular his newly released publications. A book recently appeared titled Siah ha-Re’iyah, by R. David Gavrieli and R. Menahem Weitzman. It discusses a number of important letters of R. Kook. In addition to the analysis of the letters, each of the letters is printed with explanatory words that make them easier to understand. We are also given biographical details about the recipients of R. Kook’s letters. Here is the title page. In reading the book, I once again found myself asking the question, how can intelligent people sometimes say nonsensical things? On p. 252 the book states that R. Menahem Mendel Cohen studied in yeshivot in Tiberias and Safed, and was appointed as chief rabbi of the Ashkenazic community of Cairo in 1896 when he was only ten years old! How is it possible for anyone to write such a sentence, that a ten-year-old was appointed as a communal rabbi? Let me explain what happened here, but first, I must note that the name of the man we are referring to is not R. Menahem Mendel Cohen, but R. Aaron Mendel Cohen. Here is his picture, which comes from a very nice Hebrew Wikipedia article on him. As for R. Cohen being appointed rabbi at age ten, whoever prepared the biographical introduction must have had a source which mistakenly stated that R. Cohen was born in 1886. -

Messianic Yisra'el Daily & Shabbat Siddur
BEIT IMMANUEL Global Outreach Synagogue YHVH PUBLISHING HOUSE Holy to ADONAI MESSIANIC YISR A'EL SIDDUR DAILY & SHABBAT SIDDUR PRAYER BOOK BEIT IMMANUEL Global Outreach Synagogue by YHVH PUBLISHING HOUSE Messianic Yisra'el Daily & Shabbat Siddur THE GIFT AND BEAUTY OF SHABBAT When ADONAI rested from His work of creation, He gave us the 7th Day - the Shabbat (or Shabbat). ADONAI sanctified this day and taught us to do likewise. So the Shabbat is given as a sign between ADONAI and His people, and as a commemoration of our Creator, and the very act of creation. In its simplest definition, "Shabbat" means "Rest," and so each Shabbat is a day of rest ... rest in the sense of ceasing from all the normal work & activities of the other six days of the week. It is to be a time of joy, peace and tranquility, away from the cares and worries of the world. ADONAI Elohim calls each Shabbat day "a holy convocation". "Convocation" means a "gathering together"; it is a group of believers assembling or gathering for worship, praise, and celebration. Shabbat is a day of rejoicing and joining with one another in the Presence of ADONAI! The Shabbat is a picture of the Olam Ha'Ba, or the world to come. In the rhythm of the Olam Ha'Zeh, or the present world that we live in now, however, the Shabbat is a sacred time to become spiritually reconnected with our true identities, as ADONAI Elohim's own children. "I have a precious gift in my treasure house, said ADONAI Elohim to Moses,'Shabbat' is its name; go and tell Yisra'el I wish to present it to them." ( Genesis 2:2 ) The children of Yisra'el shall keep the Shabbat throughout their generations as a covenant forever. -

Composer Biographies and Annotations
The Composers — ROBERT APPLEBAUM (bobapplebaum.com) For many years, music was an abiding love but a professional sideline for Robert Applebaum, who taught physics and chemistry at New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL, from 1965 until his retirement in June 2000. He began composing choral music for the Jewish liturgy in 1980 and has written three Sabbath services, including one for choir and jazz trio. He has composed choral settings of many psalms as well as non-secular texts. Professional, community, and children’s choirs throughout the world have performed Applebaum’s music. Chicago a cappella included two of his Chanukah pieces on their 2002 recording Holidays Live and three of his settings of Shakespeare texts on their highly acclaimed 2005 Çedille release, Shall I Compare Thee? His setting of Im Ein Ani Li Mi Li is included on Chicago a cappella’s 2010 recording, Days of Awe and Rejoicing. As a jazz pianist/composer, he has three albums to his credit: Hora and Blue (Global Village, 1993) with the Modern Klezmer Quartet, The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree (jazz piano duos with his son Mark Applebaum (Innova, 2002), and Friday Night Jazz Service (2007). ROBERT APPLEBAUM on El Malei Rachamim “When Cantor Nancy Kassel contacted me with the assignment to set this prayer, my first re- sponse was ‘Thank you for giving me such a juicy text!’. Three images in this text resonated for me: A merciful and compassionate God, the wings of the Shechinah providing shelter and repose, and the binding of the souls of those who have died to Adonai, and by extension, to us, the living.
