Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his. -

LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BO _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah As the Jewish people were preparing to leave Egypt, Moshe pointed out to them, “This day you are leaving in the month of springtime ( aviv ).” His intention was to show them the kindness of Hashem in that He chose for them a time of temperate weather to set out on their journey. These words, Rav Levi Yitzchok comments, also have a deeper meaning. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy. -

The Jewish Hartford European Roots (JHER) Project Was Accepting Applications for Educators to Become Thomas J
The Jewish Hartford European Roots (JHER) project was accepting applications for educators to become Thomas J. Dodd Research Center for Human Rights fellows to study Jewish life before the Holocaust. I was honored to learn that my fellowship application had been approved. I would now have the opportunity to take a trip of a lifetime to visit and study in Eastern Europe with the eminent scholar Professor Samuel Kassow. The following is a daily blog about this trip. But first a little background on the project. A couple of years ago the University of Connecticut Vice Provost for Global Affairs Daniel Weiner, Ph.D. envisioned a project that would focus on the European Jewish civilization that was destroyed by the Holocaust. In conjunction with Glenn Mitoma, Ph.D. the Director of Thomas J. Dodd Research Center for Human Rights at the University of Connecticut they sought out academic experts and community partners to launch a series of informative and enriching cultural programming. One of the primary goals is to convey the richness, vitality, and diversity of Jewish life so that educators, students and the community at large can get a glimpse into this world that was centered in Eastern Europe. The project strives to connect us with the everyday lives of the Jewish people, their culture, achievements, and challenges. This history is bittersweet and begs a number of large questions. Who gets to define it and what is its impact on contemporary Jewish life and the Western world? It also gives us greater insight into Jewish agency to respond to the catastrophe of the Shoah and how Nazi perpetrators used Jewish communal institutions to control and murder Jews en masse. -
Chassidus on the Balak Chassidus on the Parsha +
LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BALAK _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah Torah and Business How good are your tents, O Yaakov, your dwellings, O Yisrael (24:5). This is the famous blessing that Hashem placed in the mouth of Bilaam regarding the Jewish people. Why is the residence of the Jewish people considered a tent when they are addressed as Yaakov and a dwelling place when they are addressed as Yisrael? We can see an allusion here, explains Rav Lev i Yitzchok, to the proper relationship of a Jew to his Torah learning and to his business affairs. Yisrael is a higher level than Yaakov, as is well-known. Therefore, the name Yisrael is used when speaking about Torah and the name Yaakov when speaking abou t business. Since tents are temporary dwellings, Yaakov is being told to make his business the subordinate part of his life, and since dwellings places are permanent, Yisrael is being told to make Torah learning the anchor of his existence, as the Mishnah states ( Avos 1:15), “Appoint times for Torah study.” n Story For the first few years after his marriage, Rav Levi Yitzchok and his wife lived in Levertov in the home of his father -in-law Reb Yisrael Peretz, a wealthy businessman who provided for all their needs so that Rav Levi Yitzchok could sit and learn Torah undisturbed.
