Among them is a Japanese diplomat, Sugihara Chiune (also known as Sempo), who helped thousands of Jewish people escape from Europe. In the autumn of 1939, some 35,000 refugees from Poland, then occupied by the Nazis and the USSR, fled to Lithuania seeking safety: families, children and elderly persons, students and people of different professions and religions. They left home, often without means of identification or subsistence, arrived in Lithuania, and were taken care of. Among those refugees were some young Jewish students from yeshivas in Kleck, Mir, Lomza, Kamenec, Grodno and Pinsk – world- famous Jewish educational institutions at the time. -

Chazzonos, As Presented Here for My Thesis, Represents Three Chapters
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Lyle RockIer for the degree of Master of Arts in Englishpresented on May & 1997. Title: Chazzonos. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: I Tracyba Chazzonos, as presented here formy thesis, represents three chapters of what will be a novel of thesame name. Chazzonos is about Hal Perimutter, a cantor, who at the outset of the novel, isresigning his position of twenty years. The novelprogresses as Hal decides where he will go after Mirthgate Temple and what will be meaningfulto him. Hal's decision is complicated by the opposing forces thatrun through him: the conservative side that is attracted to ritual, tradition, and, especially, themusic of the ancient and respectable art of the cantor; and the liberal,neo-60s, almost anarchic nature of his personal life. In these three chapters, the dilemmas of Hal's lifeare introduced. He deals with the implications ofan inheritance that has allowed him to resign; he struggles with the mystery ofa relationship that is developing between his homosexual son anda new lover; and he is challenged by his long-time girlfriend to make the ultimate commitment of marriage.Throughout the narrative, Hal is affected by his attachment to the musicof chazzonos (the cantorial art) and by memories of family and tradition, nostalgic as well as painful. The questions these three chapters introduceand thatwill develop as the entire novel progressesare those of love, tradition, obligation, and how one struggles with opposing forces in one'snature. The War on Modernity of R. Hayyim Elazar Shapira of Munkacz
Allan L. Nadler THE WAR ON MODERNITY OF R. HAYYIM ELAZAR SHAPIRA OF MUNKACZ INTRODUCTION Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/mj/article/14/3/233/1003445 by guest on 01 October 2021 The rapid spread of the Zionist movement across central and eastern Europe in the first decades of this century spawned a broad spectrum of responses from Orthodox Jews, ranging from the enthusiastic em- brace of the Rabbinic leaders of the Mizrachi movement1 to unequi- vocal condemnation by dozens of communal Rabbis, Roshei Yeshiva and hasidic Rebbes.^Some of the harshest Jewish criticisms of Zionism came from the ultra-conservative hasidic leaders of Transylvania and Carpathian Ruthenia.' Among the many Rabbis from those regions who protested the expansion of the Zionist movement into their com- munities, by far the most vehement and extreme hostility was voiced by the ultra-conservative hasidic Rabbi of Munkacz, Hayyim Elazar Shapira (1872-1937)." Shapira's opposition to the Zionist enterprise was not only more militant than that of any other Rabbi of his day; it was by far the most consistent, and finally became a veritable obsession, particularly in the last decade of his life. His virulent denunciations, often in the form of curses, of what he considered to be the demonic triad of this era— "Zionists, Mizrachists and Agudath Israel colonists"—permeated al- most all of his writings.5 His attacks on these perceived heretics became especially fierce in the aftermath of Shapira's brief visit to Palestine in 1930.6 Hardly a sermon, homily or letter issued by him from that year until his death in 1937—regardless of their original context— was free of Shapira's uniquely violent and extensive anti-Zionist tir- ades.
