Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract of Thesis This thesis examines the birth of secondary education for Jews in England, focusing on the middle classes as defined in the text. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. The provincial cities of Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester, the towns of Bristol, Canterbury, Exeter, Gravesend and Portsmouth, and the resorts of Brighton, Dover and Ramsgate, are examined. This thesis endeavours to evaluate the Jewish schools’ achievements, however limited they might initially appear. Student numbers, in general, remained small and the establishments faced constant financial distress. Nevertheless, what success they had illustrates the devotion of individuals to the task. The failure of others will illustrate not only a lack of financial support, but a failure to develop a wider commitment to the creation of a regulated system of Jewish secondary schooling. Any success emanating from Jewish institutions was invariably overshadowed by the non- Jewish schools with their renowned educational backgrounds, esteemed alumni, and a willingness to admit some Jews. The history of Jewish secondary education in England is a crucial topic for a complete understanding of the ideas and aspirations of the Jewish middle classes in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This study seeks to place the world of Jewish 2 education within the context of Anglo-Jewish history in particular and within the wider context of England’s educational history as a whole. 3 Acknowledgements With thanks to Professor John D. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time.

The perpetual process of adaptation that we call life leaves nothing alone, The School itself can show a long history of change as it has moulded itself to the differing needs of time, and a glance at the gaunt girders and churned mud on one side of Bridge Road show that it is as determined to be at home in the last half of this century as it has been heretofore. The modifications to the Clavian are part of this forward-looking spirit. We have set ourselves the task of providing a magazine that will above all have a unity about it. A magazine produced to appear at the end of a school term leaves much of the School year unfinished, so we have made our first aim the production of an annual Clavian that shall appear after the Speech- Day and Prize Giving ceremony, in order to record and round-off the activity of a whole year. Further, we have felt for some time that the Clavian could provide a much closer link between present and past members of the School. The merging of the Clavian and Old Clavians' Record will, it is hoped, bring news of what is going on in the School to Old Boys, and enable those still at School to feel themselves part of a larger unit than that provided by the boundaries of the School fields. We hope that this first experimental issue will be welcome to its wider circle of readers, and that its enlarged scope will compensate its regular readers for the long time they have waited for its appearance.

    Written evidence from Board of Deputies of British Jews Introduction The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the democratic and representative body for the UK’s Jewish community. We are the first port of call for Government, the media and others seeking to understand the Jewish community’s interests and concerns. The post-death legal system, and care for bereaved families, is a perennial concern for the Jewish community, given how increased referrals to the Coroners in recent decades have had the capacity to interfere with Jewish burial and mourning traditions. Therefore, by way of background, we have included in this submission: Board of Deputies’ proposals from April 2018 that made recommendations as to reforms of the Coroner system The Board of Deputies submission to the All Party Parliamentary Group for Funerals and Bereavement June 2014 investigation into delays between death and burial or cremation. These two documents outline reforms that, in the view of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, would ensure a post-death legal system which was much more faith sensitive. However, to focus on the particular questions the inquiry has posed, it should be made clear that the Jewish community has excellent relations with the vast majority of Coroners, who accommodate the requirements of the Jewish community, especially in regard to early release of bodies and non- invasive autopsy. This is almost entirely due to the building up of individual relationships - there is very little systemic guarantee of such provision. Hence, when a Coroner does not wish to accommodate the needs of a local Jewish community, there appears to be little that can be done.
