Among them is a Japanese diplomat, Sugihara Chiune (also known as Sempo), who helped thousands of Jewish people escape from Europe. In the autumn of 1939, some 35,000 refugees from Poland, then occupied by the Nazis and the USSR, fled to Lithuania seeking safety: families, children and elderly persons, students and people of different professions and religions. They left home, often without means of identification or subsistence, arrived in Lithuania, and were taken care of. Among those refugees were some young Jewish students from yeshivas in Kleck, Mir, Lomza, Kamenec, Grodno and Pinsk – world- famous Jewish educational institutions at the time. -

Page 3 REMEMBERING RAV BINYAMIN With warmth & dedication, he built a thriving Yeshiva and community .......................... Page 4 YOSS MEMORABLE MOMENTS Sharing the excitement .......................... Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his. -
Parshat Vayishlach Dec 13-14, 2019
Thank you to Steve & Vivian Dorfman for sponsoring this week's Tefilla Notebook in memory of Steve's mother, Anne Gendis, Chana Braina bat Yosef a"h, whose yahrtzeit is on 20 Kislev. 16 Kislev ● Parshat Vayishlach Dec 13-14, 2019 Dearest Members and Friends, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13 One of William Shakespeare’s best-known quotes is: “Be not afraid of greatness – some are 4:26pm CANDLELIGHTING born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” 4:30pm MINCHA/KABBALAT SHABBAT Those who achieve greatness often defy advance prediction. Such a man was the late Rabbi SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 Eleazar Menachem Man Shach, whose 18th yahrtzeit we commemorated last month. A 8:30am RABBI’S GEMARA SHIUR Lithuanian-born yeshiva-trained scholar lucky enough to emerge from Nazi-overrun Europe, 9:15am SHACHARIT in 1940 he settled in Palestine where he struggled to find income as a yeshiva teacher, despite his previous 3:45pm PRE MINCHA SHIUR experience running a significant yeshiva in Europe. He was eventually hired to teach at Ponevezh, a 4:20pm MINCHA remarkable institution created by the legendary Ponevezher Rav, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman. Rabbi 4:40pm SEUDAH SHLISHIT Shach proved very popular with students, although he was initially overshadowed by his colleague Rabbi 5:25pm MA’ARIV Shmuel Rozovsky, a masterful pedagogue whose clarity and scholarship made him the undisputed superstar 5:30pm SHABBAT ENDS Talmud lecturer at the yeshiva. In retrospect, Rabbi Shach was typical of many rabbis like him who had survived the Holocaust – qualified, competent, pious, a scholar, and deeply committed to the cause of reestablishing the world that had been Sun. -

Chassidus on the Chassidus on the Parsha +
LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BO _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah As the Jewish people were preparing to leave Egypt, Moshe pointed out to them, “This day you are leaving in the month of springtime ( aviv ).” His intention was to show them the kindness of Hashem in that He chose for them a time of temperate weather to set out on their journey. These words, Rav Levi Yitzchok comments, also have a deeper meaning. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy. -
