(Shemos 12:27) The holy Berditchever asks the following question in Kedushas Levi: Why is it that we call the yom tov that the Torah designated as “Chag HaMatzos,” the Festival of Unleavened Bread, by the name Pesach? Where does the Torah indicate that we might call this yom tov by the name Pesach? Any time the Torah mentions this yom tov, it is called “Chag HaMatzos.” He answered by explaining that it is written elsewhere, “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li — I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine” (Shir HaShirim 6:3). This teaches that we relate the praises of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and He in turn praises us. So, too, we don tefillin, which contain the praises of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu dons His “tefillin,” in which the praise of Klal Yisrael is written. This will help us understand what is written in the Tanna D’Vei Eliyahu [regarding the praises of Klal Yisrael]. The Midrash there says, “It is a mitzvah to speak the praises of Yisrael, and Hashem Yisbarach gets great nachas and pleasure from this praise.” It seems to me, says the Kedushas Levi, that for this reason it says that it is forbidden to break one’s concentration on one’s tefillin while wearing them, that it is a mitzvah for a man to continuously be occupied with the mitzvah of tefillin.

    1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance.

Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) VA’ES CHA NAN _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah Deciphered Messages The Torah tells us ( Shemos 19:19) that when the Jewish people gathered at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah , “Moshe spoke and Hashem answered him with a voice.” The Gemora (Berochos 45a) der ives from this pasuk the principle that that an interpreter should not speak more loudly than the reader whose words he is translating. Tosafos immediately ask the obvious question: from that pasuk we see actually see the opposite: that the reader should n ot speak more loudly than the interpreter. We know, says Rav Levi Yitzchok, that Moshe’s nevua (prophecy) was different from that of the other nevi’im (prophets) in that “the Shechina was speaking through Moshe’s throat”. This means that the interpretation of the nevuos of the other nevi’im is not dependent on the comprehension of the people who hear it. The nevua arrives in this world in the mind of the novi and passes through the filter of his perspectives. The resulting message is the essence of the nevua. When Moshe prophesied, however, it was as if the Shechina spoke from his throat directly to all the people on their particular level of understanding. Consequently, his nevuos were directly accessible to all people. In this sense then, Moshe was the rea der of the nevua , and Hashem was the interpreter.

    Yovel Sampler Yovel Sampler This year marks the fiftieth year since 1967 and the Six-Day War, which gave Israel control of all of Jerusalem and of the West Bank and Gaza. Through the Yovel Project, Jewish communities are exploring the Jewish concept of yovel—the biblical cycle of fifty years meant to shape our relationship to the land and people around us—as a way to get unstuck, and perhaps to bring about a new and better reality for both Israelis and Palestinians. This project does not aim to offer an ancient prescription for contemporary political challenges. Rather, we ask, in dialogue with the vast textual richness of the rabbinic tradition, how entering yovel-consciousness might shape our understanding of our contemporary moment. The full Yovel sourcebook offers eight multi-page text studies, focusing on seven themes of Yovel plus Jerusalem. This sampler offers the original biblical text that commands yovel plus one or two texts from each of the eight sections. After studying the sampler, we invite you to dive into the full text study on whichever topic(s) most intrigue you, or to use this mile-high view to consider how the themes touch and shape each other.     H-Judaic Obituary: Zvi A. Yehuda Discussion published by Sarah Imhoff on Monday, October 27, 2014 H-Judaic is saddened to learn of the passing, on October 3rd of Rabbi Zvi A. Yehuda (1927?-2014), professor emeritus at Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, who also taught at Oberlin College, John Carroll University and elsewhere. A disciple of R. Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz (the Hazon Ish ) and a Yeshiva University Ph.D., R. Yehuda was best known for his editorial work on the Kehati Mishnah and for his extensive teaching, which continued in Boca Raton, to the very end of his life. Dr. Peretz Rodman kindly send us the following obituary that appeared in the Cleveland Jewish News: Rabbi Zvi A. Yehuda, prominent rabbi, Talmudic scholar, and beloved educator, passed away on the eve of Yom Kippur, in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 88. Rabbi Yehuda, who resided in Cleveland from 1964 until 1991, wrote the popular “Thought of the Week” column on the weekly Torah portion for many years in the Cleveland Jewish News. He was a lifelong educator, whose teaching combined Talmudic logic with an extensive familiarity with rabbinic sources, philosophy, and linguistics. Rabbi Yehuda’s engaging style of teaching and vast storehouse of knowledge made him a popular lecturer to both beginning students of Judaism as well as learned rabbis. An original thinker with a modern perspective, Rabbi Yehuda was born in Jerusalem, and spent much of his formative years studying with one of the leading sages of the generation, Rabbi Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz (1878-1953), known as the “Hazon Ish.” He received rabbinic ordination at a very young age and served in the Israel Defense Forces from 1948 until 1950.
