I want to express my hakoras hatov to R' Yaakov Moshe Berkowitz, a dedicated friend of my father, Harav Hagaon Rabbi Zalmen Leib Meisels, and a staunch supporter of his kehilla, and benefactor to kol davar shebikedushah. It was his suggestion to have this sefer translated into English. His generous support and encouragement enabled to bring this project to fruition, kedei lezakos es harabbim. May Hashem grant much nachas, simchos, and good health to him and his entire mishpachah. Rabbi Dovid Meisels has performed a monumental service to the Jewish community. This inspired presentation of the fundamentals of Shabbos Kodesh in all its beauty is a work of art, which appeals to the soul with magnetic force. The author has gathered choice pearls of wisdom from a rich away of sources spawning the vast spectrum of Torah Wisdom from the wellsprings of Chazal up until the writings of the Sages of our own generation. For those whose Shabbos experience has been hitherto tenuous and colorless, this work will serve to kindle a flame of feeling and warmth. Those whose Shabbosim have already been spiritually elevated may glean from these writings a deeper understanding of things already familiar to them and use them to raise their spirituality even higher. The Torah says: Shabbos is an everlasting sign of unity between Hashem Yisborach and klal Yisroel. It creates awareness that Hashem has made us a holy people. Rabbi Meisels' masterwork will serve to fasten that awareness without, which Shabbos would be no more than an empty shell. For that he deserves everlasting credit.     239 Setting the Record Straight: Was the Chasam Sofer Inconsistent? A Review Essay By: NOSSON DOVID RABINOWICH In this essay we will discuss claims made in two recent articles, published by two leading scholars, to the effect that the Chasam Sofer was inconsistent and contradicted himself. I will attempt to show that those supposed “contradictions and inconsistencies” are either simply nonexistent or can be properly explained by careful and deliberate analysis of the actual sources and the issues involved. While my respect for Rabbi Moshe Sofer, the late “Chasam Sofer,” of blessed memory, is not merely that reserved for a great rabbi and outstanding scholar, I have endeavored to maintain a balanced and critical approach throughout. Nevertheless I feel it appropriate to note that from my perspective, Rabbi Sofer was a holy rabbi, a saint if you wish, whose towering scholarship in so many areas of Jewish studies was unmatched by his peers or by any rabbi from any subsequent generation. I do not hesitate to apply to him this popular saying: “From R. Moshe [Ben-Maimon; Maimonidies] until [R.] Moshe [Sofer] there was no one of the stature of R. Moshe [Sofer].”1 1 As the halakhic authority of his generation, he was probably more prolific than any other rabbi going back six hundred years, since the leading halakhic authority of the Golden Age in Spain, Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet. Of R.     Latkes Traditional latkes are made of shredded, white potatoes. They are the richer brother of potato pancakes, a German staple. There are endless variations. Any veggie can be used to make latkes. As for me, I’m a lazy cook, so I’ve assembled a latke using frozen, shredded hash browns. Here is a traditional latke recipe, although there are many out there, and my shortcut version. Bon Appetit. Traditional Latkes 1 pound of potatoes, peeled or not, shredded ½ cup finely chopped onion 1 egg ½ tsp. salt pinch black pepper oil for frying sour cream applesauce Rinse the shredded potatoes. If you shred them in advance, cover with cold water. Mix all ingredients except oil. Heat oil, ½ inch deep. (It should pop when you put a drop of water in, but be careful! Too hot and the latkes will burn before they cook inside.) Take a scoop of the mixture and pat it into a flat, 3 inch pattie, about ½ inch thick. The sides should not be thinner than the middle. Fry a few at a time, turning when the bottom gets brown. Remove to a plate with paper towels to soak up the excess oil. Eat these puppies warm with sour cream and applesauce. I know this sounds like a terrible combination to anyone who has not had latkes, but try it. You’ll like it. This recipe doesn’t call for matzo meal, but I always use some. Be sure you let the mixture stand a while before shaping, if you add matzo meal, so the matzo meal binds to the rest of the ingredients.

This handbook will provide you with information about the process of preparing for becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel. “Bar/Bat Mitzvah” is a noun. It refers to a person who has become responsible for the mitzvot (the commandments or imperatives of Jewish life). When your child becomes a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, the Jewish community will begin to see her/him more as an adult and less as a child. S/he will be counted in a minyan, s/he will be eligible to be called for an aliyah, and s/he will begin to be expected to make thoughtful choices about the mitzvot of daily life. One of the important mitzvot about which s/he will make a choice, concerns continuing Jewish education in the post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah program including culminating with Confirmation and graduation in 12th grade. In our opinion, if a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration at the age of 13 marks the end-point of Jewish study, it is comparable to dropping out of school after completing elementary school. It is a tragic loss of opportunity to learn and continue to explore, on a more mature level, what it means to live a Jewish life. We certainly hope you will encourage your child to continue his/her Jewish education, not only in our post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, but also throughout life.
