A person must feel, however, that each day is a miniature Rosh Hashanah (hence there is no allusion in the Torah to the fact that the first day of Tishri is the day of judg- ment, for a person must feel that Hashem is judging his actions each day), as we say in prayer: “In His goodness He re- news each day, continuously, the work of Creation.” We must feel renewed each day, as the Sages have said: “That the words of the Torah shall be new to you, as if they were given just today” (Tan- huma Yashan, Yitro 7). Thus a person must feel that each day is a new one for him, at which point he will experience a great spiritual elevation. Similarly, we feel renewed when we wear a new ar- ticle of clothing and recite Shecheyanu, for everything new opens the mind, and when the mind is more open, joy is awak- ened. Hence we should have our minds opened on Rosh Hashanah. Yet that is not the case, for instead we are seized with fear (as the Gemara states, “On Rosh Ha- shanah, the more a man bends his mind, the better it is” [Rosh Hashanah 26b]). Why is this so? It is because we haven’t broadened our minds during the entire year. However if we feel renewed each make Hashem our King. However the renewed fear on Rosh Hashanah. If we day throughout the year, then on Rosh reality is that such a person has already feel renewed each day, we will certainly Hashanah we will not be subjected to made Him his King each day through feel “Rosh Hashanah,” but it will not anxiety or fear. his prayers and 100 times a day through be a terrible sensation or a dread of the his blessings, as we recite: “Blessed are In reality, Rosh Hashanah is a day Day of Judgment. Among them is a Japanese diplomat, Sugihara Chiune (also known as Sempo), who helped thousands of Jewish people escape from Europe. In the autumn of 1939, some 35,000 refugees from Poland, then occupied by the Nazis and the USSR, fled to Lithuania seeking safety: families, children and elderly persons, students and people of different professions and religions. They left home, often without means of identification or subsistence, arrived in Lithuania, and were taken care of. Among those refugees were some young Jewish students from yeshivas in Kleck, Mir, Lomza, Kamenec, Grodno and Pinsk – world- famous Jewish educational institutions at the time.

Issue (# 14) A Tzaddik, or righteous person makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. (Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach; Sefer Bereishis 7:1) Parshas Bo Kedushas Ha'Levi'im THE TEFILLIN OF THE MASTER OF THE WORLD You shall say it is a pesach offering to Hashem, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel... (Shemos 12:27) The holy Berditchever asks the following question in Kedushas Levi: Why is it that we call the yom tov that the Torah designated as “Chag HaMatzos,” the Festival of Unleavened Bread, by the name Pesach? Where does the Torah indicate that we might call this yom tov by the name Pesach? Any time the Torah mentions this yom tov, it is called “Chag HaMatzos.” He answered by explaining that it is written elsewhere, “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li — I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine” (Shir HaShirim 6:3). This teaches that we relate the praises of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and He in turn praises us. So, too, we don tefillin, which contain the praises of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu dons His “tefillin,” in which the praise of Klal Yisrael is written. This will help us understand what is written in the Tanna D’Vei Eliyahu [regarding the praises of Klal Yisrael]. The Midrash there says, “It is a mitzvah to speak the praises of Yisrael, and Hashem Yisbarach gets great nachas and pleasure from this praise.” It seems to me, says the Kedushas Levi, that for this reason it says that it is forbidden to break one’s concentration on one’s tefillin while wearing them, that it is a mitzvah for a man to continuously be occupied with the mitzvah of tefillin.

  • Ostropol – a Brief Jewish History
1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance.

Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his.

In this vein, the Travel Retail Market turns out to be an incredible showcase. Part of this Distribution Channel, the Airlines Business may be the next tool for high-end Brands to convey their message throughout the world. It is presently underused by Guerlain. Our purpose is thus to come up with strategic marketing recommendations in this specific Business, consistent with the Brand image and with its usual selling policies. Our vision is that the Company could be as successful in the Airlines Business as it is in the Travel Retail Worldwide one. CONSTRAINTS: Our main constraint was the lack of available information on the subject: if a lot of Brands capitalize a lot on their Travel Retail Business Units, usually no specific unit is dedicated to the Airlines Business. Thus, most of the Brands selling on board turn out to be more driven by the business than driving it.
