In the sixth century of the sixth milennia, a tremendous light of wisdom came to the world, just as the Zohar Hakadosh predicted it would. Since we did not fully utilize it for Torah, it was exploited by scientists to foster an industrial and tech­ nological revolution ... Kabbalistic trad;tion spoke qf the year 1948 as a time of heavenly inspiration for kib­ butz goluyos (ingathering the exiles). Once again we were not able to utilize the opportunity, and the secular Zionists exploited it to create a state, .. In our own times, there is a divine inspiration for teshuva. Once again the Torah comrnunity missed the opportunity to do teshuva, and only the non-religious have taken advantage of it. Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Simcha Bunim Alter N''~'71V How do you "return" to where you never were? Many people today speak of a return to Judaism. Teshuva is the word they use in Hebrew. But in any language, how can anyone who was always elsewhere come "back"? The sages say that the souls of all Jews- those who had been born, along with those not yet born-were present at Sinai. Thus one could speak of return in terms of a collective unconscious or deja vu. But there is a more immediate way of relating to the phenomenon of thousands of young Jews being awakened to Judaism. Teshuva means return, true. But it also means answer, or response . , . or, perhaps, echo. At one level, what we are witnessing today is the answer to two thousand years of persecution, forced assimilation and YlSHIVA DYAR YERUSHALAYlM seduction.     English Abstracts “I Shall Work”: Justifications for and Consequences of Ultra-Orthodox Women Shouldering the Burden of Breadwinning Iris Brown (Hoizman) From the early 1960s, ultra-Orthodox society, and particularly its “Lithuanian” component, gradually adopted a socioeconomic model in which women became the primary providers. Ultra-Orthodox women took upon themselves the financial responsibility for the family, as if to say: “I shall work, sustain, provide, and support.” Yet, in addition, they continued to declare: “I shall educate, deal with the day-to-day running of the house, and take care of my husband.” The entry of the ultra-Orthodox woman into the workplace enabled the “society of learners” to function (i.e. enabled the husbands to dedicate their time exclusively to Torah study), but it also threatened the patriarchal structure of the ultra-Orthodox family. Ultra-Orthodox leadership tried to prevent this undesirable consequence, in essence seeking to set a social revolution into motion without paying the price. In the first generation of the revolution, the process was promoted as “self-sacrifice” for the sake of Torah, combining the desire to aid in the building of the “Torah world” in the Land of Israel and to give honor to the husband-Torah scholar. As the revolution progressed, however, the innovative development demanded justification and defense. This article examines how ultra-Orthodox leaders and educators have dealt with the fundamental difficulties posed by the “woman as provider” paradigm, such as the blurring of masculine and feminine roles and the perceived progressive increase in the status of women versus the sanctified ultra-Orthodox theological principle that posits the inherent decline of progressive generations.

    B”H Introduction In our first article on the AOJS, we explored interactions between Rebbe and Dr. Offenbacher — its founder. In this article, we will make note of additional interactions the Rebbe had with the AOJS. While the full story of the relationship between the Rebbe and AOJS is worthy of a more detailed study, we will focus here on a few specific interactions. Dr. Cyril Domb Professor Dr. Cyril (Yechiel) Domb (5681-5772) was born in North London, England, into a Chasidic Jewish family. He was deeply affected and inspired by his grandparents who were deeply religious Jews. He, in turn, retained this deep religious feeling, was meticulous in his observance of the Mitzvos — which always took precedence over activities for professional advancement1— and spent much of his free time devoted to Talmudic studies (including attending a daily Daf Yomi Shiur). Dr. Domb led a long and fruitful career in the study of Theoretical physics and statistical mechanics, lecturing at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, King’s College, London University, Bar-Ilan University, University of Maryland, Yeshiva University, Hebrew University, Jerusalem College of Technology and the Weizmann Institute. Shortly before making aliyah to Israel, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. After encountering AOJS members in 5718, during a sabbatical year at the University of Maryland2, he helped found and lead a sister organization of the AOJS in London, in 57223. In 1971, Domb became the general editor of a book series which was sponsored by the AOJS, the purpose of which was to systematically present material which could be used for Jewish education.

The Internet provides Jews who do not fit within their brick and mortar communities an outlet that gives them voice, power, and sometimes anonymity. They use these websites to balance their Jewish identities and other personal identities that may or may not fit within their local Jewish community. This research was conducted through analyzing a broad range of websites. The first chapter, the introduction, describes the Jewish American population as a whole as well as the history of the Internet. The second chapter, entitled “The Black Hats of the Internet,” discusses how the Orthodox community has used the Internet to create a modern approach to outreach. It focuses in particular on the extensive web materials created by Chabad and Aish Hatorah, which offer surprisingly modern twists on traditional texts. The third chapter is about Jewish online dating. It uses JDate and other secular websites to analyze how Jewish singles are using the Internet. This chapter also suggests that the use of the Internet may have an impact on reducing interfaith marriage. The fourth chapter examines marginalized communities, focusing on the following: Jewrotica; the Jewish LGBT community including those who are “OLGBT” (Orthodox LGBT); Punk Jews; and feminist Jews.

    Shabbat-B'Shabbato – Parshat Vayeira No 1596: 18 Cheshvan 5776 (31 October 2015) AS SHABBAT APPROACHES The Binding of Yitzchak - by Esti Rosenberg, Head of the Midrasha for Women, Migdal Oz "He suppressed his pity in order to perform Your will with a complete heart. So let Your mercy suppress Your anger against us." These words from the "Memories" section of the prayers for Rosh Hashanah are an expression of an abstract of the Binding of Yitzchak – the human ability to overpower our natural mercy and our desires when they come up against the obligations and the commands of the Creator of the World. The Holy One, Blessed be He, demands that man must be willing to abandon some of his own inclinations, and sometimes even be willing to give up his life and to overcome his natural feelings of mercy as part of our acceptance of the yoke of heaven. This main element of the link between the Creator and His creatures first appeared in the way that G-d tested Avraham. In the end Yitzchak was not offered as a sacrifice, but the essence of personal sacrifice in response to a command and to the will of the Creator was born on Mount Moriah, and it remains the basis of our religious lives. What did Avraham feel at the time when he began to understand this very significant point? What emotions did he experience when he climbed Mount Moriah? Two world giants tried to describe Avraham's emotions at this point. Rav Kook writes, "Avraham did not lose any sleep that night, because of the clear knowledge that had come to him through the word of G-d.
