National Honor Society Frequently Asked Questions

What is the National Honor Society? The purpose of this shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote , and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

Who are the NHS Advisors? Mrs. Rizza (Advisor B17) and Mr. Banks (Assistant Advisor B14)

When are you a member of the NHS? You are only a member during your senior year. *Your Senior Write-ups should reflect this

Why were you invited to join the NHS? A minimum of a 3.85 GPA qualifies you for eligibility.

How do you maintain eligibility throughout the process? Complete the application and submit it to Mrs. Rizza in B17 no later than April 8, 2016 (before the end of period 8). Meet the deadline to maintain eligibility.

Where do you submit your application? Place your application (no envelopes) in the bin on Mrs. Rizza’s desk in B17. Do not leave the application in Mrs. Rizza’s mailbox. Please verify the spelling of your name on the roster that is next to the bin. If the spelling is correct, initial next to your name. If it is incorrect, please make appropriate changes. (Your name will appear this way on your certificate.) Do not interrupt any classes!

How are you notified of acceptance into the NHS? If you are not contacted via announcement about your application by May 1st, your name will appear on a list posted in B17 on May 5nd. You will be inducted into the Eagles of the NHS on May 19th. Invitations will be mailed home to your parents.

When is the rehearsal and induction ceremony? The rehearsal is held May 19, 2016 during period 8 in the auditorium. Please arrive as soon as the bell rings (Do not go to class.). The ceremony begins at 7pm. You need to arrive at 6pm. We will meet in the Commons.

What is the required attire for the induction ceremony? Dress to impress! Wear shirts, ties, jackets (optional), dress pants, skirts, dresses and appropriate footwear. Flip flops and sneakers are not appropriate (unless you have a foot injury).

What NHS responsibilities do you have your junior year? Complete application, attend rehearsal and induction, attend meetings between May 19th and end of school year (Forms, Officer Elections, etc.). Please note: Community service for your senior year will not begin until the summer vacation begins. The 2016-2017 NHS Community Service Form is on the THS website (Clubs & Activities – NHS).

How do you receive NHS ? Posted on the bulletin board in B17 and through emails communications from advisors and officers

What are the NHS requirements during your senior year? Requirements include but are not limited to the following: • Completion of 40 hours of community service (20 in THS community/20 in THS) by April 3, 2017 (you may begin service this summer and you many not earn double credit for other ) • Signed NHS service form for each service projected (submitted to officers) as completed • Attendance at all meetings and next year’s induction ceremony • Participation in the mandatory Parent-Teacher conferences service project (Don’t confuse this with Back to School Night) • Maintain minimum 3.85 GPA • Uphold virtues of character, leadership, scholarship and service • Do not violate NHS bylaws

What happens if you fail to complete the requirements? If you fail to complete NHS requirements, you are no longer a member of the National Honors Society. You will not be recognized in the graduation ceremony program and you will not receive or a seal on your diploma.
