DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2018 Illustrious Ronald A. Seale, 33°

he Distinguished Achievement Award celebrated its début in 1934, with the late Brother John Ward Dunsmore, Tthe famed historical mural painter. In the many years that have transpired since that noble event, the members of the Grand Lodge Distinguished Achievement Award Committee have had uncommon opportunities to select and extend an invitation to a Brother who lives and breathes Freemasonry. Accepting this prestigious Award today is a senior member of the Craft who has proven over his tenure that he is the very embodiment and essence of Freemasonry. Today, the Committee together with this Grand Lodge has the rewarding opportunity to pay tribute and homage to a true leader of the Craft. Today, we honor the Illustrious Ronald A. Seale, 33°, the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America. To better know our recipient; let us briefly explore the concordant body known as the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in tandem with Symbolic Freemasonry became an integral part of American society and the New World at a time in when authoritative and suppressive systems of government were relinquishing their hold to an open, individualistic and more tolerant society. In the immortal words of the Ill. , Sovereign Grand Commander (1859), “The chief purpose of the Supreme Council, formed at the beginning and steadily pursued ever since, has been to make the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite a Freemasonry which the man of intellect and the scholar might find it profitable to devote himself to; to embody in its teachings all the great truths taught by wise and good men in all ages; to Ronald A. he Administration Building is among the most modern structures on the Masonic Care Community campus in TUtica, whether judged by age or design. It replaced the original Administration Building, which was dedicated on October 6, 1892. After much soul searching, the Trustees decided in 1964 to demolish the original building. The principal architect for the Trustees at that time was Right Worshipful Brother Trevor W. Rogers, 33o, of Buffalo, New York. During his five decades of work as an architect, he served as President of the New York State Association of Architects and on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects. Brother Rogers was well known in Masonic circles in Western New York. He performed as a magician in fundraisers for local organizations. Prior to his death at the age of 96, on October 24, 2003, Brother Rogers was recognized with a community service award by the Town of Tonawanda as the “epitome of a man who loves his community and shows it.” The front of the present-day Administration Building. While organizing and archiving historic materials at the Masonic Care Community, Kathy Contino-Turner found a summary of work which Brother Rogers’s firm performed for the Trustees during the period from 1956-1981. Over that period, his firm worked on twenty-six projects for the Trustees. Among the other notable projects designed by Brother Rogers were the Stewart Wing addition to the hospital and the 80- bed Master Mason Wing addition to the Skilled Facility. He prepared several studies for projects which were not built, including a new Grand Lodge Building in New York City and a Masonic Retirement Home on Grand Island in Western New York. Included in the Rogers materials was a copy of remarks he delivered on October 22, 1981 at a dinner held at Trinkhaus Manor in Oriskany. His speech that evening disclosed some of the mystical inner workings of the Trustees. One anecdote described an incident during the preliminary design stages of the present Administration Building. One of the Trustees “was most anxious to have a combination Lodge Room and Auditorium added to the building. It was brought to a vote and ended up in a tie.” The President didn’t vote. During a coffee break, the Trustee proposing the auditorium cornered the President “and practically lifted him off the floor by his coat lapels” and said, “If you…had voted for the auditorium, it would have broken the tie vote and we’d have that auditorium.” Those who have visited the Administration Building know that it was eventually built with the auditorium. Once the decision was taken, work proceeded quickly. The cornerstone of the first Administration Building was removed on January 30, 1965. Ground was broken on May The original Administration Building on the Masonic Care Community Campus was razed in the early spring of 1965 to continues on page 21 make way for a new, more efficient structure. 20 THE EMPIRE STATE MASON MAGAZINE Building the Future SUMMER 2018 Masonic Care Community RW Rob Raffle, Executive Director Masonic Care Community of New York 315/798-4882 [email protected]
