Late October 2011

Dear Old Wabash:

Much has happened since we last wrote. Here are some main points.

Classmate News Sean Hayes recently completed his M.S. in Appropriate Technology from Appalachian State and has been hired as the Facilities Manager & Community Outreach Coordinator at 's A.J. Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. The facility was recently named the most important green building of the past 30 years by Architect magazine.

Davis Hull recently left his job at JP Morgan Chase in Houston to pursue his MBA full-time at Syracuse University in balmy Syracuse, NY.

Seth Ditchcreek and his wife are expecting their first child in January 2012 just before Chinese New Year.

Faculty News Vic Powell H’55 passed away on October 6, 2011. Powell served Wabash College in virtually every possible way — Professor of Speech, Department Chair, Secretary of the Faculty, Dean of the College, Executive Vice President, and Acting President. Though none of us had class with Professor Powell, he was a constant at Wabash events and spirited orator for Thursday Chapel talks.

Ed McLean, long-time political science professor, passed away on September 12, 2011. I (Jacob) was the only sophomore (amongst towering juniors and seniors) in his constitutional law class. Daily, in Baxter 201 or 2011 (it overlooks the Mall), Professor McLean would walk into class, place his Robert E. Lee coffee mug on the table, and begin a rapid assault on our readings and understandings.

At Homecoming, Professor of History Emeritus Peter Frederick H’92, Professor of English Tobey Herzog H’11, and Sports Information Director Brent Harris H’03 were made honorary alumni.

College News Wabash is advertising for two new Annual Giving fundraisers. You can find information here.

And, building upon the success of the two previous symposia - Wally at the Bat (Baseball) and Wally Bon Vivant (Food), this coming alumni and faculty symposium on February 24, 2012 will cover the Liberal Arts and the Automobile. If you’re interested in presenting or showing off a classic car, contact Tom Runge ([email protected]) by November 10.

There’s an alumni Trip to the Theater District in London scheduled for Spring 2012 with Prof. Dwight Watson. If you are interested, please contact Tom Runge ([email protected]).

There’s also an alumni Trip to Italy scheduled for late May 2012. Bill Cook '66 will again lead alumni on a trip to Italy, bring your walking shoes as Bill can get you into places where even the best tour groups can't go. Again, contact Tom Runge ([email protected]).
