August 1, 2007

Greetings, Class of ’73!

As promised, let’s get started with updates from some classmates – Guy Guthrie, Jack Foos, Rick Appley, and Wayne Hoover:

From Guy Guthrie ~

As an update for me, I’m still in Richmond, IN and enjoying it. I’m active in our church, First Presbyterian in Richmond, as well as several charities. One group puts on an annual golf tournament for charity, one is building a Mission Outreach Center for groups to use, and one operates a men’s residential addictions recovery center called the Hope House.

I work in a small town called Union City, IN - famous for being a split city that straddles the -Ohio state line. I run the logistics for a lumber manufacturing firm there (that consists of getting the logs in, shipping the lumber all over the world and selling the sawdust, mulch and wood-chips).

Shirley and I have one son Todd and he got through ‘Bash in 1996 as a Phi-Psi, not a Teke. He has parlayed his Economics degree into a profession as a CFP (certified financial planner) with his independent company, Guthrie Financial Group, in Noblesville.

I can empathize the fun Patsy and you are having with 5 grandsons; we have a granddaughter (6) and a grandson (2) and they are a true delight!

As for Wabash, I have worked a couple of college-days in this area for them and will do so in the future. We try to get back to the campus when possible but we only get it done about once a year.

Keep me up to date on reunion material and I’ll try to get back to campus for them.

From Jack Foos ~

I am working as the Controller for Dave Stetler Chevrolet - Cadillac in Crawfordsville. Besides serving as Treasurer of our church, Treasurer of the Sugar Creek Association of Wabash Men, District Administrator for the State Soccer Referee Committee, and Associate Instructor for Soccer Referees, I referee a wide variety of games, including our Alma Mater. My wife Carol is a customer service rep at RR Donnelly's and her oldest son has given us a future Wally. Her youngest is a Wabash Grad. Can you believe it has been almost 35 years since we became Wabash Grads?

From Rick Appley ~

Pedro - good to hear from you again. I also remember David Gibson - you were both on a spiritual quest at the time - David was from Winchester, MA I think at the time. I'll see if I can locate him for you. After leaving Wabash I transferred to UMass/Amherst to complete my Bachelor's and attended American International College for my Master's both in Criminal Justice. I retired after a 31-year career in law enforcement starting as a Community Service Officer with the Amherst Police Department in 1974 and ending as a supervisor with the Massachusetts Parole Board in 2005. Since retirement I completed a professional investigation program at Boston towards getting licensed as a private investigator, and do volunteer work for a Foundation that provides safety programs and ID kits for children throughout Massachusetts and contiguous states. I have a daughter, Heather (27) living in Ohio with my grandson Colin, and a son, Justin (26) living in Oregon.

Classmate Wayne Hoover made an appearance on campus a few weeks ago. The occasion was the bike ride he was on to honor his lost friend, Larry Turner. It’s a terrific story. You can find one of several accounts of his travels that are on the Wabash website at http://www2.wabash.edu/blog/pa/2007/07/post_8.html. More details on the Larry Turner Memorial Cross-Country Challenge can be found at http://imperator.ca.uky.edu/turnerchallenge/.

Now on to what’s on the horizon at Wabash…

The game will be broadcast for the next three years on HDNet, the company owned by Pittsburgh native, IU alumnus, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. The quality of the broadcast, both from technical and production perspectives, is really quite good. If you can’t be there, be sure to catch one of the watch parties.

Glee Club Alumni To Sing At Homecoming Alumni of the Glee Club will perform a concert during Homecoming, September 29, as part of a Glee Club reunion. Practice will begin Friday night, and the weekend will conclude with a concert Saturday night after victory over the Earlham Quakers.

Wabash Day October 6–7, 2007 Wabash Alumni Benefiting And Serving Humanity

Wabash Day is the National Association of Wabash Men's annual, national day of community service. It is tied to the core values of the college requiring men to to be responsible citizens and to be effective, thoughtful leaders to make our communities more humane.

Jon Pactor, Class of ’71 reminds us, “The Gentleman’s Rule requires us to be gentlemen and responsible citizens. The college’s mission statement requires us to think critically, act responsibly, lead effectively, and live humanely. On Wabash Day, we demonstrate those values in our communities.”

So far, alumni have already agreed to be Wabash Day Leaders to organize and carry out projects in more than 40 communities for 2007. If you reside in one of those communities, contact the Wabash Day Leader to give a helping hand. They are listed on the next page. If there is no project in your community, please call me to discuss your becoming a Wabash Day Leader. Alumni are free to plan their own projects, but they must avoid projects that are ideological or sectarian. They must stick to either October 6 or 7 or both days. Most projects last about one-half day.

Our venues should increase, but as of July 5th, the 42 venues and their Wabash Day Leaders for 2007 are:

As I was thinking about WABASH Day, it struck me that this provides an excellent opportunity to connect with high school men who have expressed an interest in attending Wabash. WABASH Day can demonstrate to them what a Wabash education is all about.

What’s happening on campus…

Based on the amount of contact I’ve had over the past two weeks from returning students and some of the in-coming freshmen, it’s obvious to me that classes are about to begin for the 2007- 2008 school year (Last Thursday, I got home to find 32 emails waiting for me!). I found it interesting a week ago when I received a note from a Russian college student who had been part of an exchange program last year. She could not understand why the Wabash students she corresponds with all seem to be eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Fall semester. I think that prevalent attitude speaks well of Wabash and the men who choose to invest four years of their life in a small, liberal arts college for men in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Kingery Is Razed - The college recently razed Kingery Hall after a severe storm with winds estimated at 100 mph struck it in April 2006. The storm ripped off the roof, and more than an inch of rain poured in thereafter. About a year later, upon consultation with architects and engineers, life supports were removed, and the building was razed. Built in 1854, it was Wabash’s oldest classroom building remaining in its original location. Prof. Hugh Kingery made it his home from 1891 to 1916. We remember it as an infirmary.

Center Hall Turns 150 - Center Hall was put into service during the 1856-1857 school year. The wings to the building were added after the Civil War. The president’s office has been in the building since its inception. There was historically a religious chapel in the building, and students climbed what they called “the stairs to prayers.” The college itself is 175 years old this year.

Football Team Looks To Big Season The Little Giant football team returns several veterans from a team that lost only two games last year, one of which was in overtime and the other on a missed field goal at the end of the game. With a praiseworthy freshman class, the team is looking for another successful season. The D3 Football website has placed Wabash in the Top 25 Teams at #22. I hope to see classmates at some of the games – be sure to let me know you’re in town. Homecoming will be September 29.

The schedule is as follows: Sept. 8 Franklin 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Millikan 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Ohio Wesleyan 1 p.m. Sept. 29 Earlham 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at Allegheny 2 p.m. Oct. 13 Wittenberg 1 p.m. Oct. 20 Oberlin 1 p.m. Oct. 27 at Wooster 1 p.m. Nov. 3 Denison 1 p.m. Nov 10 DePauw

Note – I have been asked to be an honorary coach for the Wabash-Wittenberg game, the game picked by some publications as the biggest/most important football game in the country that week. I’m excited about this opportunity. I got tickled with Coach Creighton when I contacted him to accept the invitation. I was going on-and-on about the implications of the Wabash- Wittenberg game. His low-key response was, “Yeah, we should have a lot of fun!”

And here’s the topic you knew was coming and you’ll probably get tired of hearing about from me…

Big Bash 2008

With the coming and going of the 2007 Big Bash this past June, the Class of ’73 needs to be working to assure our 35th Reunion is a success as we gather on campus June 6-8 next year. To get a sense of what Big Bash can be for us, check out the Big Bash page at the college’s website (http://www.wabash.edu/alumni/reunion). There you’ll find a list of activities as well as lots of photographs from this year’s event.

We desperately need some men to step forward to assist with this for us to pull this off properly. We have 10 months left until the next Big Bash. Ask yourself what role you can play. The most critical role is that of the attendance chairmen – those who will contact your pledge brothers or Independent classmates. If you’re planning to attend next June, right now is a great time to start renewing your relationships with those you were closest to at Wabash. Email me if you’re willing to give it a try and I will get a contact list of those in your living unit send right back to you. There are other planning roles available and there is still time to make the reunion into what you picture as the ideal reunion experience as being. So email me at [email protected] or call me on my cell at 765-366-6342. And finally, the usual Class Agent business… Refer A Student: All of us can refer a worthy student via wabash.edu/alumni/alumni/refer; or via letter to Wabash Admissions P.O. Box 352, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.

Your annual contribution to the college. Why not take a minute and write your check right now? Or make your donation on-line at the Alumni site. One of the areas we are in competition with the other classes that will be at next year’s Big Bash is on our overall giving participation. I sent my check in this week. Send me updates! To help keep these Class Letters from simply being a rehash of the same thing from month-to-month, we need your input. Let me know where you are, what you’re doing, your family situation, projects/causes you’re committed to, outstanding achievements in your life and the life of your family (we’re at a point in time when some of us even have GRANDCHILDREN who are beginning to accomplish meaningful things.). With that, I’ll close for now. I hope to hear from you in the coming days.

Pete
