J+M+J We are given parables today involving a “treasure buried in a field” and a “pearl of great price.” (Mt 13:44 52) In both instances, the finder “sells all that he has” to obtain the precious item at hand. (44,46) The earthly valuables in the parables are analogies for the kingdom of heaven or a relationship with Jesus. How much do we treasure Jesus? Are we willing to sell everything we have for him? Is there anything more important in our lives than Jesus? This is the point of life! To come after Jesus with everything that we have and then some. The kingdom of heaven is before us each day, which is more valuable than all the earthly riches and everything else combined. Please do not allow anything to stand in your way. One final point, the finders of the treasures sell all they have with “joy!” (44) Once we find Jesus, we not only come after him, but we do it with gusto. May today’s parables stir our hearts to joyfully come after Jesus with everything that we have so that we can find the true meaning of life. I want to share with you news about our music ministry. Ian Michael Brown has taken a music position elsewhere. We are sad to see him leave. We thank Ian for sharing his many musical talents with us over this past year. I am sure that he will continue to inspire many through song. We also congratulate him and his wife, Lauren, on the recent birth of their first child, Max. With Ian’s departure, I am happy to announce that Sharon Sisley will move from Assistant Director to Director of Music Ministry. As we all know, Sharon will be a tremendous blessing as she directs our music ministry. Sharon brings a wealth of talent and experience, as she has served for a number of years at former St. Pius, St. Mary’s, and Corpus Christi. I am also happy to report that Carolyn Guzik, the Director of Music Ministry at former St. Patrick Parish and who has currently been assisting us, is our new Assistant Director of Music Ministry. Carolyn is very gifted, and we look forward to her sharing her skills and experience with us. I believe that Sharon and Carolyn will make an amazing team! Ian’s last day will be Sunday, August 2, 2020. Sharon and Carolyn will begin in their new roles on Monday, August 3, 2020. Please keep all of them in your prayers. I thank you for the generous response to our Festival Raffle Tickets. They are pouring in! Additional tickets can be picked up at the parish office and at the doors of the churches. If you are unable to pick up tickets, please call the parish office for assistance. Thanks again! The annual Chrism Mass, which is usually on Holy Thursday, will be at St. Paul Cathedral on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. August 4 is the feast day of St. John Vianney, the patron of priests. At the Chrism Mass, the holy oils are blessed by Bishop Zubik for the entire diocese and priests renew their promises. Due to precautions, the only priests attending will be representatives from the Presbyteral (Priest) Council and the newly ordained priests. The Mass will be livestreamed at www.diopitt.org. Parish representatives will pick up the oils the following day at St. Paul Seminary. YOU FOUND THE GREATEST TREASURE! St. IgnatiusLoyola was born in 1491, one of 13 children of a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was Saint of the Day for July 29 inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood Martha, Mary, and their brother Lazarus were and dreamed of doing great evidently close friends of Jesus. He came to their deeds. home simply as a welcomed guest, rather than as one celebrating the conversion of a sinner like Zacchaeus or one unceremoniously received by a suspicious But in 1521 Ignatius was Pharisee. The sisters feel free to call on Jesus at their gravely wounded in a battle brother’s death, even though a return to Judea at that with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola time seems almost certain death. experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong and the made Ignatius happy and aroused statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death. desires to do great things. Ignatius realized that these “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; feelings were clues to God’s direction for him. whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I of spiritual direction. He collected his insights, have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the prayers, and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Son of God, the one who is coming into the Exercises, one of the most influential books on the world’” (John 11:2527) spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, Saint Martha is the Patron Saint of: or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as Cooks, Housewives, Servants, “contemplatives in action.” This also describes the Waiters and Waitresses many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saintmartha/ spirituality.

On July 30, the Catholic Saint Ignatius of Loyola is the Patron Saint of: Church celebrates Saint Retreats Peter Chrysologus, a fifth century Italian bishop https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/ignatianvoices/ known for testifying stignatiusloyola/ courageously to Christ's full humanity and divinity during a period of doctrinal confusion in the Church. The saint's title, Chrysologus, signifies “golden speech” in Greek. Named as a Doctor of the Church in 1729, he is distinguished as the “Doctor of Homilies” for the concise but theologically rich reflections he delivered during his time as the Bishop of . Chrysologus is the Patron Saint Against Fever and Against Mad Dogs. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/stpeter chrysologus546 St. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Redemptorist congregation in 1732. It was an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and working mainly in popular missions for peasants in rural areas. Alphonsus’ great pastoral reforms were in the pulpit and confessionalNreplacing the pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and the rigorism of with kindness. His great fame as a writer has somewhat eclipsed the fact that for 26 years he traveled up and down the Kingdom of Naples preaching popular missions. He was made bishop at age 66 after trying to reject the honor, and at once instituted a thorough reform of his diocese. At 71, Alphonsus was afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck. Until it was straightened a little, the pressure of his chin caused a raw wound on his chest. He suffered a final 18 months of “dark night” scruples, fears, temptations against every article of faith and every virtue, interspersed with intervals of light and relief, when ecstasies were frequent. Alphonsus is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of spiritual and dogmatic theology. HisGlories of Maryis one of the great works on that subject, and his bookVisits to the Blessed Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church. SaintAlphonsus was known above all as a practical man who dealt in the concrete rather than the abstract. His life is indeed a practical model for the everyday Christian who has difficulty recognizing the dignity of Christian life amid the swirl of problems, pain, misunderstanding and failure. Alphonsus suffered all these things. He is a saint because he was able to maintain an intimate sense of the presence of the suffering Christ through it all.
