...... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we encounter a number of people whom fortune smiles upon. , heir to ’s throne, is visited by God, who promised him whatever he wishes. In the Gospel, a random person discovers buried treasure and a merchant searching for a fine pearl finds a pearl of great price. How do these people respond? How would we respond? Let us listen to God’s word and contemplate our true fortune, our true treasure. No doubt you have heard the saying, “You can’t take it with you,” it means that we leave this world the way we came into it without even the clothes on our backs but the truth is that there are some things you can’t take with you into eternal life. They are just material things, and that is what Jesus is talking about in the treasure parables. Real treasure is that which has eternal value it’s what you can take with you. Congratulations to Bishop Malesic on being named the Bishop of Cleveland!!! Wednesday is the Feast of Saint Martha. She is remembered as the bustling woman chided by Christ for “being busy with many things,” while her more contemplative sister “took the better part” however, the Gospel accounts also recorded Martha’s remarkable profession of faith in Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of God,” placing her in the company of Peter as the only follower of Jesus to recognize His divinity before His resurrection. Thursday is the Feast of Chrysologus. He was the fourth century bishop whose preaching earned him the name, the goldenworded. His homilies explained doctrines like the Trinity eloquently, clearly and concisely. Thursday is also “World Friendship Day”!! Friday is the Feast of Saint , the founder of the Jesuits religious order. His Spiritual Exercises have become a model of Christian discernment and discipline. Saturday is the Feast of Saint Alphonsus of Liguori. A child prodigy who became a lawyer, he became a preacher to the poor, the less educated and to those in need. He viewed the as a means to holiness or as Francis wrote: “Not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.” Saturday begins the month of August which is named after the first roman emperor, Caesar Agustus. Reflection on the Call to Holiness by Pope Francis We may think that we give glory to God only by our worship and prayer or simply by following certain ethical norms. It is true that the primacy belongs to our relationship with God but we cannot forget that the ultimate criterion on which our lives will be judged is what we have done for others. Prayer is the most precious, for it nourishes as a daily commitment to love. Our worship becomes pleasing to God when we devote ourselves to loving generously and allow God’s gift, grated in prayer, to be shown in our concern for our sisters and brothers. (97) Question of the Week: What or whom have I overlooked in searching for the kingdom of heaven? How can I develop an understanding heart? Our Psalm Response this week: “Lord, I love your commands,” reminds us that God’s treasures are more important than silver and gold. It is so good to have baseball back and, this week, hockey. Now we pray that football will also be back! Let’s go Pens! Peace, Fr. Bill Let’s go Bucs!
