The ordination took place on the feast of Mary, Help of Christians. I dedicate this paper to the Blessed Virgin Mary who has been my help and my solace throughout my entire life. Introduction In the Surah entitled “The Table Spread” in the Quran, Mohammed, the prophet of Islam, proclaimed a long revelation from God, and in a part that spoke of the role of Mary and teachings of Jesus, the following was mentioned: “And behold! Allah will say: ‘O Jesus the son of Mary! Did you say to men, ‘worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah’?’” (Sura 5:116).1 It is of note here that not only the strict mono- theistic religion of Islam objected to the Christian worshipping of Jesus as God, but it was commonly believed that Christians also worshipped his mother, Mary, as a goddess. This may have been the result of a mis- understanding of the term Theotokos, literally meaning “God-bearer”, but also means “Mother of God”, which was attributed to Mary by the Christians, who used the phrase Theotokos in their liturgical worship. Likewise, in Protestant theology, there was a reaction to the excessive adoration of the Virgin Mary in the non-liturgical devotions of the churches of the Latin West, which was termed “Mariolatry.” However, as Jaroslav Pelikan noted, the Eastern churches commemorated and cel- ebrated Mary as the Theotokos in their liturgical worship and hymnology.2 The place of the Theotokos in the liturgical worship of the Eastern Chris- tian churches does not only show the spiritual relation between the Virgin Mother and the people who commemorate her, but it is primarily a creedal affirmation of the Christology of the believers praying those hymns addressed to the Theotokos.

THE difficulties caused by the association established in Luke ii. 1 between the birth of Christ and a census taken in J udma at the order of the Emperor August us are well known. Dr. Schiirer devotes thirty-four pages in his Gesch. des Jiid. Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi to the subject, and any discussion of the difficulties might properly be rested on the foundation of his learned and careful work; but it is better merely to acknowledge my debt to him, and to leave our difference of opinion unnoticed. In the Ex­ POSITOR for January, 1897, p. 72, it is mentioned that exigencies of time prevented me at the moment from stat­ ing an argument on this subject. The pledge implied may be now redeemed; and though it is obviously beyond the bounds of an article to discuss the subject as a whole, one point at least, which is of central importance, may be illustrated. The words of Luke should, as I believe, be understood thus : " There was issued a decree by Cmsar Augustus that census should be taken of the entire Roman world ; this [with which we are concerned] took place, the first census [of the series], while Quirinius was administering the province Syria." I believe that the synchronisms in Luke ii. 1, 2 and iii. 1, 2 are founded on a careful and extended study of history, and that the author wished to place Christian history in its proper position on the background of Roman history. Obviously it is impossible to maintain that view, if the first synchronism, which he establishes at such a critical point in his narrative, is a mere blunder, not merely erroneous in some detail, but involving false views in a number of essential points (as some scholars maintain).

    Anja Becker, Julia Schmeer Ave maris stella Hans Sachs und Maria im Spannungsfeld von Tradition, Innovation und Reformation Mit einer Vorüberlegung zum Analysieren vormoderner Übersetzungen Andreas Kraß hat in seinen Studien zu deutschen Übersetzungen lateinischer Sequenzen, insbesondere des Stabat mater dolorosa, darauf hingewiesen, dass mittelalterlich-volkssprachliches Übersetzen sich als Adaptation vollzieht: Der Prätext werde hierbei an die konkrete Lebenssituation der zeitgenössischen Rezipienten angepasst, wobei vornehmlich pragmatische, literaturhistorische und frömmigkeitsgeschichtliche Faktoren bestimmend seien.1 Die meisten deut- schen Sequenzübersetzungen emanzipieren sich deutlich von ihren lateini- schen Vorlagen,2 daneben gibt es aber auch solche Versionen, die sich dem Prätext subordinieren, Kraß bezeichnet diese als ‚glossierende Adaptationen‘.3 In diesem Beitrag sollen Übersetzungen des Marienhymnus Ave maris stella untersucht werden. Im Allgemeinen kann man feststellen, dass sich volks- sprachliche Übertragungen lateinischer Hymnen weitaus weniger von ihren lateinischen Vorlagen emanzipieren, als dies bei deutschen Sequenzüberset- zungen der Fall ist. Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. The story of salvation, especially the life of Jesus, forms the basis through which many Christians encounter the eternal. Indeed, each facet of Christ is intricately intertwined with the others and that Christian literature often focuses on redefining various figures in the image of Christ and on illustrating morality. Without disparaging in any way the story of Jesus Christ, this paper parallels the conceptualization of epic heroism and the narrative of Jesus Christ. In doing this, the article provides a critical exegesis of elements of epic heroism in the story of Christ. Ultimately, reading the story of Jesus Christ through the prism of epic heroism helps us submit that it is a “tale of Christian identity” comparable to the epic identity and able to convey eternal meaning to Christian groups who recognize it as “their story of salvation”. Epics usually rank very high among literary and traditional genres. They are great narratives or superstories that excel in length, power of expression, and weight of content compared with other narratives (Honko, 1996). Their value, however, derives less from their literal content than from their cultural context and function: they are seen in relation to something beyond their text, such as people’s perception of group identity, core values of the society in question, models of heroic conduct and human endeavor, symbolic structures of history and mythology.
