Confession

The sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is a beautiful sacrament. It not only brings forgiveness, it also imparts spiritual strength and healing upon the penitent. Weekly confession is offered at both sites at Our Lady of The Lakes Parish. At St. Peter’s from 8:00am - 9:00am, and at St. Bede’s from 11:30am - 12:30pm. (both on Saturdays).

However, it is necessary to distinguish between confession and spiritual direction. The sacrament can provide some spiritual direction, but that really is not the intent of Reconciliation. The sacrament is for forgiveness of sins. Spiritual direction involves more lengthy conversation and takes a considerable amount of time. Sometimes there can be more than twenty people waiting in the line to go to confession. If the priest spends even ten minutes with each penitent, it would take more than three hours to finish all twenty people. Therefore, it is necessary that those who come to the sacrament simply state their sins so they can be forgiven. If a person desires more time, or spiritual direction, it is important that he or she makes a separate appointment with Fr. Mike or myself.

It is also important to remember that a person does not have to explain the sin. Sometimes a penitent takes considerable time going over the details that led to the sin they are confessing. This is not necessary. Also, it is good to remember that confession only involves the sins of the person who is in the confessional. Yes, a person’s husband (or wife) may be guilty of sin and should go to confession, but telling the sins of that person is not helpful or appropriate.

Please understand that it is not my intent to come across so harshly in this article. The sacrament of Reconciliation is wonderful and it should be a time of joy for the person who comes to church. Unfortunately, with the number of penitents who come to church on any given Saturday, it is necessary to understand what the sacrament is truly about. Reconciliation is about the confession of sins. Spiritual direction is a meeting to discuss at length spiritual matters that pertain to a person’s faith journey. The two things are not the same.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. George

The Ministry of Art and Environment.

Each parish needs to prepare and care for the environment of the liturgy. Our Lady of the Lakes Parish is looking for people of talent and skill for preparing a beautiful worship space. Each church has had volunteers who have worked for the beauty of the church, and your gift of time and energy is so appreciated. As we begin rebuilding our church ministries, the Arts and Environment Committee is not so much a task of new beginnings, but an attempt to reorganize our efforts.

Art and environment for the church needs to be dignified and beautiful. It needs to be worthy of the holiness of the sacred action of the Liturgy. It should be the expression of the people and direct our attention to the suited season or celebrated feast. Fr. George has asked that we have an Arts and Environment Committee with the goal of making our liturgical space beautiful, inviting, and uplifting in worship. If you would like to join this ministry, we need your help. Please contact Jeanine Kellman at [email protected] or talk with me at Mass. I will be so pleased to meet you.

14 OUR LADY OF THE LAKES PARISH - ST. PETER CHURCH ANTIOCH, IL - ST.BEDE CHURCH INGLESIDE IL Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s message could be summed up in psalm 145, “The hand of the Lord feeds us, he answers all our needs.” Each reading shows how carefully God feeds and cares for us, in an up-close and personal fashion. Elisha fed the crowd from twenty barley loaves. Jesus blessed a few loaves and thousands were fed. Perhaps this seems far-fetched, but we read stories in the news about chefs taking the leftovers from fancy restaurants and feeding many people in a soup kitchen. As a schoolgirl, one of my favorite stories was “Stone Soup,” the tale of a couple of war-weary soldiers convincing the people of a frightened and starving little coun- try village to bring out their meager supplies and share them to make a marvelous soup to feed the town. The second reading asks us to “Consider well our call.” How do we respond to those in need around us?

MIRACLE OR MAGIC? It can be easy to just say, “Oh yes, this is the story of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, when everybody decided to share the bits of food they had.” But how much of it is really about feeding the crowds? “Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?’ He said this to test him, because he knew what he was going to do.” It must have been very hard to trust Jesus, especially when the disciples often didn’t understand him. This year has been challenging for us, too, to trust that God will provide, and also challenging for us to ask for help. In the Rule of Saint Benedict, there is a chapter called “The assignment of impossible tasks.” It says, in essence, that when your superior tells you to do some- thing impossible, it is fine to go talk to them about it, but in the end you may still be asked to do this task. In what situations are we called to trust? When are we asked to act in faith or to do the impossible task?

HOW WILL WE KNOW WE ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING? Miracles are seldom as obvious as the multiplication of loaves and fishes. Many years ago, I overheard a family conversation in a restaurant at the end of a long holiday weekend. At the register was one of those collection jars saying, “For just fifty cents a day you can feed a child.” The little girl asked her folks about it and they explained it. She said, “I have money left from my weekend, could I put it in the jar?” The parents said yes and let her go on the adventure for herself. She came back and sat down, and they chatted some more. She said, “If fifty cents feeds a child for a day, then I was able to feed one for three days, because I had $1.50 left from the weekend.” When we follow this child’s example and go beyond the minimum, when we give all we can, we know we are doing the right thing, and we have understood the test that Jesus posed to Philip so long ago.
