4 Saint Paul the Apostle Parish Sunday, July 25, 2021 Did You Know?

St. Peter Chrysologus, Doctor of Homilies Deacon Michael Whalen riday, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Peter Chrysologus, Bishop and . FChrysologus means “golden-worded,” such was his skill at preaching the Gospel, or arguing against the heretics of his time. He communicated using simple, easy-to-understand homilies. is sermons are known not only for their brilliance but also their brevity. Chrysologus had a simple Hunderstanding of what God was calling him to do: to preach the Gospel and to save souls. He was born in , in the year 406 A.D. He received a classical education, undertook religious studies, and was then ordained a deacon. Chrysologus was named the bishop of a diocese that was plagued by heresy. He took as his life’s mission to root out the heresy and plant the seeds of true faith in God – mostly through his preaching. He was believed to be able to change hearts by merely preaching the Word of God. In the year 433, Sixtus consecrated him Archbishop of . He continued his spiritual and corporal works of mercy. A loving shepherd, he cared for his flock with passion and attentiveness. He built many churches in his diocese and also rebuilt churches that had fallen into ruin. Saint Peter routed out “O man, why do you think so little of yourself the paganism and other abuses that had when God thinks so highly of you? Why dishonor formed within the yourself when God so honors you? Why be so faithful of his day. He concerned with the stuff from which you are fought valiantly against made and so little with the purpose for which you heresy. are made? All visible creation is your home.” He was an excellent - St. Peter Chrysologus preacher who believed that sermons should remain short because he was afraid that the listeners would quickly become tired and that he risked losing their attention. Although brief, his homilies are very doctrinally sound. It has been said that Saint Peter would speak with such passion in his preaching that he would often become speechless from excitement. He died in Imola in 450 A.D. In 1729, Pope Benedict XIII declared him a Doctor of the Church.
