Perceptions of the Mediterranean have long been shaped by European perspectives. It has been seen as an idyllic space of civilization, of exchange and mobility. This view is rooted in re-translations of the Roman mare nostrum, in nostalgic visions of nineteenth and early twentieth-century colonial cosmopolitanism, and in modern practices of tourism -

The Distribution Of Obsidian In The Eastern Mediterranean As Indication Of Early Seafaring Practices In The Area A Thesis By Niki Chartzoulaki Maritime Archaeology Programme University of Southern Denmark MASTER OF ARTS November 2013 1 Στον Γιώργο 2 Acknowledgments This paper represents the official completion of a circle, I hope successfully, definitely constructively. The writing of a Master Thesis turned out that there is not an easy task at all. Right from the beginning with the effort to find the appropriate topic for your thesis until the completion stage and the time of delivery, you got to manage with multiple issues regarding the integrated presentation of your topic while all the time and until the last minute you are constantly wondering if you handled correctly and whether you should have done this or not to do it the other. So, I hope this Master this to fulfill the requirements of the topic as best as possible. I am grateful to my Supervisor Professor, Thijs Maarleveld who directed me and advised me during the writing of this Master Thesis. His help, his support and his invaluable insight throughout the entire process were valuable parameters for the completion of this paper. I would like to thank my Professor from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikolaos Efstratiou who help me to find this topic and for his general help. Also the Professor of University of Crete, Katerina Kopaka, who she willingly provide me with all of her publications –and those that were not yet have been published- regarding her research in the island of Gavdos. -

ERT Pollution Monitoring in Areas of Olive Oil Mills' Wastes (OOMW): Preliminary Results from a Disposal Site in Crete (Greece)
©Geol. Bundesanstalt, Wien; download unter www.geologie.ac.at Berichte Geol. B.-A., 93, ISSN 1017‐8880 – Poster and Company Presentations ERT pollution monitoring in areas of olive oil mills' wastes (OOMW): Preliminary results from a disposal site in Crete (Greece) 1 1 NIKOS PAPADOPOULOS and STEFANOS CHATZIATHANASIOU 1 Laboratory of Geophysical – Satellite Remote Sensing & Archaeo-environment, Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Foundation for Research & Technology, Hellas (F.O.R.T.H.), Rethymno 74100, Crete, Greece. [email protected] Introduction and Problem Statement The Mediterranean region accounts for no less than 97% of the world's olive oil production due to the favourable climatic conditions. Especially, Greece holds the third place worldwide in olive oil production and the island of Crete contributes approximately 5% to the total world olive oil production. The production procedure of olive oil generates large volumes of Olive Oil Mill Wastes (OOMW) with high organic load and rich in-inorganic constituents which lead to pollution of soil and water resources and therefore environmental degradation The OOMW are usually disposed in evaporation ponds which are rarely of proper size and wastewaters often overflow affecting neighbouring systems (soil, surface and groundwater) and other professional activities of the residents (agriculture, livestock farming). The base of the ponds is permeable and thus, the probability for groundwater and deep soil contamination is high. Consequently long-term disposal of waste, without necessary monitoring and protective measures may cause changes in the physico-chemical parameters of the surrounding ecosystems, with the risk of future non-tissue degradation of the environment. Moreover, older waste sites often lack reliable geological or artificial barriers and depositional information, to minimize the possibilities of further environmental damages. -

Ecotourism Guide to NATURA 2000 Network Areas on Crete
Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete Be part of it, protect it! Operational Programme for Crete and the Aegean Islands Co-financed by Greece and the European Union Preface Dear friends, The past, present and future of Crete are inextricably bound up with its exceptional natural environment. Rich biodiversity, a significant number of endemic species, a variety of ecosystems and landscapes of outstanding natural beauty are what characterize our natural heritage. In acknowledging the value of our natural environment’s multiple functions as regards healthy living and quality of life, as well as in implementing our vision of sustainable development, Crete Regional Authority has made the protection, sound management and promotion of our island’s nature its top priority. The NATURA 2000 Network protected areas have a significant role to play in realising that aim, given that they act as key reserves for nature conservation throughout Europe. In publishing this “Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete” we present the NATURA 2000 areas on Crete, highlighting their characteristics and stressing both their value and their prospects for growth. Sculpted by time and six thousand years of human history, our island’s nature is a common good each of us can enjoy, while also being under the obligation to protect it. We can only hope that through this guide we will all come to better know the NATURA 2000 protected areas, and understand the need to protect them.
